Alvin ISD welcomed more than 70 local senior citizens for its first-ever Senior Citizen Skip Day on Tuesday, September 22, bringing community members together for a morning filled with district updates, student performances, friendly competition and plenty of opportunities to connect. The event gave guests an inside look at Alvin ISD while also introducing the district’s newest community initiative, the Alvin ISD Legacy Club.
To help ensure transportation was not a barrier to participation, Alvin ISD provided transportation to and from the Alvin Senior Center. Board President AJ Johnson and Board Vice President Danielle Swiney also helped provide transportation for community members who needed assistance getting to the event.
The Legacy Club is designed to bring senior members of the community together with district leaders, students and staff through opportunities to learn, connect and experience Alvin ISD in a more personal way. Throughout the year, members will be invited into schools and district events to learn more about the people, programs and initiatives shaping Alvin ISD and preparing students for successful futures.
More than simply sharing information, the Legacy Club is focused on building relationships and creating opportunities for conversation. It also provides a way for longtime community members who have helped shape the Alvin ISD area to remain connected to their local schools and continue to be part of the district’s story.
Senior Citizen Skip Day offered the perfect introduction to that mission.
During the morning, Deputy Superintendent Rory Gesch provided guests with an overview of the district’s Bond 2024 program, sharing information about the projects and improvements taking place throughout Alvin ISD.
Guests also learned about additional ways to become involved in the district. Director of Family and Community Engagement Ana Pasarella was on hand to share information about the district’s YET Mentoring Program and sign up seniors interested in serving as mentors to Alvin ISD students.
Of course, the morning wasn’t all business. Guests had the opportunity to get moving and show off their competitive sides during several lively rounds of chair volleyball.
One of the highlights of the event came from Alvin ISD students themselves. Students from Brothers, Duke, Marek, Pomona, Wilder and York elementary schools treated guests to a special performance from the West Side Elementary Musical production of Madagascar: A Musical Adventure KIDS. The performance gave Legacy Club members a firsthand look at the talent, creativity and hard work of Alvin ISD students.
The first Senior Citizen Skip Day was a tremendous success and a great start to what Alvin ISD hopes will become a new tradition. Several additional opportunities are already planned throughout the school year for Legacy Club members to connect with the district and one another. Each experience will offer a different look at Alvin ISD while providing opportunities to meet students and staff, visit schools and learn more about the work happening across the district every day.

We look forward to welcoming even more community members into the Alvin ISD Legacy Club as we continue to learn together, connect with one another and celebrate the legacy we share.
