Four thousand backpacks are making their way to Alvin ISD campuses this week, representing something much bigger than school supplies: 4,000 Alvin ISD students will begin the 2026–2027 school year with the tools they need to learn, succeed, and feel prepared from their very first day of school.
The success of Alvin ISD’s 2026 Operation Backpack was made possible through an extraordinary community-wide effort involving more than 20 community organizations and over 300 volunteers who donated financial resources, school supplies, time, and countless hours of service.
Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and community partners, Operation Backpack received more than $25,000 in monetary donations, in addition to significant in-kind donations of school supplies. Together, these contributions made it possible to prepare 4,000 backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies for Alvin ISD students.
During July 20–23, more than 300 volunteers came together at Alvin Elementary to sort thousands of school supplies, organize materials by grade level, fill backpacks, and prepare them for distribution to Alvin ISD campuses. Volunteers included students, student organizations and athletes, parents, district staff, and representatives from businesses, churches, civic groups, nonprofit organizations, and other community partners.
On Monday, July 27, the initiative reached its final stage as Alvin ISD's Distribution Department and community partners loaded and transported the backpacks to campuses throughout the district. Several of the same community organizations that contributed financially and volunteered throughout the initiative returned once again on Distribution Day to personally help deliver backpacks to schools, demonstrating that their commitment extended far beyond writing a check or donating supplies.
“We are incredibly grateful for the way our community rallied around our students,” said Ana Pasarella, Alvin ISD Director of Family & Community Engagement. “When we say 4,000 backpacks, what we really mean is 4,000 students who will walk into school with the supplies they need. This was a tremendous undertaking, and it could not have happened without the hundreds of volunteers and community organizations that gave their resources, their time, and their hearts to make sure our students are ready for the new school year.”

In addition to recognizing these sponsors, Alvin ISD extends a special thank-you to the community partners who returned on Distribution Day to help load, transport, and personally deliver backpacks to campuses. Their presence provided a meaningful conclusion to weeks of preparation and allowed district staff and campus administrators to personally thank the organizations helping make a difference for Alvin ISD students.
Operation Backpack was intentionally designed to make receiving assistance as convenient and dignified as possible for families. Students received Operation Backpack vouchers in advance, allowing backpacks to be prepared according to each student's grade-level needs. The completed backpacks are being delivered directly to Alvin ISD campuses, where school staff will coordinate distribution to participating students.
Through Operation Backpack, Alvin ISD and its community partners are sending a powerful message to thousands of students as they prepare for a new school year: their community sees them, supports them, and wants them to succeed.
