Naming

The Alvin ISD Board of Trustees officially approved the names of four new campuses during its June 2026 Board meeting following recommendations from the district's Facility Naming Committee. The names honor individuals whose service, leadership, and dedication have made a lasting impact on Alvin ISD and the greater community.

The Facility Naming Committee was formed in accordance with Board Policy CW (Local), which outlines the process for naming district facilities. The committee included Board members, district administrators, staff members, and community representatives who reviewed nominations submitted by the public and evaluated each nominee based on established criteria. The committee's recommendations were presented to the Board for consideration and subsequently approved.

The newly approved campus names are:

Emmit Miller Elementary

Located in the Canterra Creek development, Elementary #23 will be named Emmit Miller Elementary. Miller was a lifelong Alvin resident and educator who devoted more than three decades to Alvin High School as an Industrial Arts teacher and department chair. His commitment to students, craftsmanship, and community service left a lasting legacy across Alvin ISD.

Earl Humbird Elementary

The replacement elementary campus on Mustang Road, which will replace Walt Disney Elementary and Stevenson Primary, will be named Earl Humbird Elementary. Humbird served 21 years on the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees and helped guide the district through significant growth while supporting the construction of more than 33 district facilities. His leadership and dedication to students and families have helped shape Alvin ISD for generations.

Joan Young Junior High

Junior High #10 in Canterra Creek will be named Joan Young Junior High. Young dedicated nearly four decades to Alvin ISD as an educator, coach, mentor, and volunteer leader. Her influence extended beyond the classroom through her support of student activities, district committees, and numerous community organizations.

Cecelia Jones Elementary

Elementary #24 will be named Cecelia Jones Elementary. Jones served as a music teacher at Mark Twain Elementary for 17 years and earned multiple Teacher of the Year honors, including Alvin ISD District Teacher of the Year. Her commitment to education, leadership, and youth development left a profound impact on students and the Alvin community.

The naming process included a public nomination period, community outreach efforts, committee review meetings, and a final recommendation to the Board. Through the naming of these campuses, Alvin ISD honors individuals whose contributions exemplify the district's commitment to educational excellence, community service, and student success.

As Alvin ISD continues to grow, these new campuses will serve future generations of students while preserving the stories and legacies of those who helped shape the district's history.
