Dr. Mason

Following a comprehensive search process shaped by community input, the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees has named Dr. Rhonda D. Mason as the district’s next superintendent of schools.

An award-winning educator with more than 25 years of experience in Texas public schools, Mason has served as a teacher, principal, and district leader in Houston ISD, Fort Bend ISD, and Lamar CISD. She is known for strengthening student achievement, supporting educators, and building strong relationships within the communities she serves.

“On behalf of the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees, I would like to welcome Alvin ISD’s new superintendent, Dr. Rhonda Mason,” said Alvin ISD Board President Cheryl Harris. “Dr. Mason’s focus on putting students first goes along with the district’s vision of “Each Student, Every Day.” We look forward to working alongside her as we create opportunities for each student to thrive and continue supporting the legacy of all who call Alvin ISD home.”

Mason joins Alvin ISD from Lamar CISD, one of the fastest-growing school districts in Texas, where she served as area superintendent. In that role, she provided direct leadership and support to campus principals, strengthened instructional systems, and worked closely with district leaders, educators, and families in a rapidly growing community.

Throughout her career, Mason has focused on improving student outcomes through strong instructional systems, collaboration, and data-informed decision-making. Under her leadership, campuses demonstrated significant academic growth and improvement, including substantial gains at schools facing the greatest challenges. She has also helped districts strengthen professional development, expand college and career readiness opportunities, and improve systems supporting students and staff.

Her work in early childhood education produced lasting results as well. As a campus and district leader, Mason helped expand access to full-day pre-K programs, strengthen literacy instruction, increase family engagement opportunities, and support teachers in developing strong foundational reading skills for students.

Mason’s leadership priorities align directly with what Alvin ISD’s board and community identified as their most pressing needs: strengthening special education systems, improving communication and visibility, protecting fiscal health, and planning thoughtfully for growth.

“My focus is simple: students first, strong instructional and operational leadership, and clear, transparent communication,” Mason said. “Together, we will build on Alvin ISD’s strengths and move the district forward with purpose.”

Although she has served in large school systems throughout her career, Mason says her values were shaped by growing up in the small town of Coldspring, Texas, a close-knit community of about 800 people.

“Growing up in a small town taught me the importance of knowing your neighbors, investing in your community, and never losing sight of the people you serve,” Mason said.

An award-winning educator, Mason has been recognized as TABSE Principal of the Year, Distinguished Educator of the Year from Sam Houston State University, and Outstanding Doctoral Student of the Year. She holds a doctorate in educational leadership as well as degrees from Sam Houston State University and the University of Texas at Arlington.

Mason and her husband look forward to becoming active members of the Alvin ISD community.
