With the classroom split in two and a podium at the center, Ms. Coppes' AP Government class at Manvel High School became a debate stage as students took on one of the most defining arguments in American history: the ratification of the Constitution.
Divided into Federalists and Anti-Federalists, students teamed up to prepare for a fast-paced, Reagan-style debate that challenged them to deliver arguments with confidence while balancing historical accuracy and persuasive delivery.
One of the most important elements of a Reagan-style debate is listening closely as opponents present their arguments, then working quickly with teammates to identify weaknesses, craft rebuttals, and strengthen the team’s overall message.
By the final word, students had done more than revisit the Constitutional Convention, they experienced the power of civic discourse and gained a deeper understanding of the collaboration, critical thinking, and persuasive communication required to craft, present, and win an argument.
