In Ms. Barrientos’ kindergarten class at Sanchez Elementary, counting to 12 was all treats and no tricks!
These little are learning strategies for counting two-digit numbers, and one of last week’s lessons focused on mastering the number 12.
To begin, students reviewed counting to 11, which they had already conquered earlier in the week. Ms. Barrientos then reminded them that numbers in the teens can always be broken into 10 and __.
As a class, they practiced grouping items on the board into a group of 10 and then counted the remaining 2 to make sure the total added up to 12. They then broke into small teams to practice together before trying it on their own.
Whether they were counting skeleton bones (Cheetos) or spider webs (pretzels), each student was challenged to count out 12 items and then check their work using a number line.
Once everyone was counting with confidence, the class earned a well-deserved movement break before jumping into their math stations.
