Heart Safe

Project AdamĀ® recently named Alvin ISD a heart safe district for its efforts to prevent sudden cardiac death. This national recognition highlights the district's commitment to maintain a safe and prepared environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Project AdamĀ®- (Automated Defibrillators in Adam’s Memory) is a program of Texas Children’s Hospital aimed at reducing sudden cardiac deaths in schools by providing support and resources to train and equip staff in what's needed in case of an emergency. The program is named in memory of Adam Lemel, a 17-year-old who died from a cardiac event while at school.

To receive the Project ADAMĀ® designation, all staff must be trained annually to recognize a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA); Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) must be placed throughout each campus for a quick response time and a Cardiac Response Team must be established at each campus. Additionally, cardiac response drills are conducted in collaboration with local EMS partners to ensure seamless coordination in emergency situations.

"While we hope to never need the skills we teach, we recognize that providing our staff with the right training and equipment will likely save someone's life," said Katrina Weber, the district's lead nurse. "Being a Heart Safe District reflects our dedication to student and staff safety, our proactive approach to health emergencies, and our alignment with national best practices."
