School Safety & Security Update

Ensuring the safety of our students and schools is always a top priority in Alvin ISD.

Standard Response Protocol (SRP)

Alvin ISD utilizes a Standard Response Protocol (SRP). This SRP is being adopted by emergency managers, law enforcement agencies, school and district administrators and emergency medical services across the country. It is an enhancement to the current school safety plan and designed to provide consistent, clear, shared language and actions among all students, staff and first responders. We encourage you to review the Standard Response Protocol and pay particular attention to the following terms:

Secure: Get inside, lock outside doors

Lockdown: Locks, lights, out of sight

Evacuate: A location may be specified

Shelter: Hazard and safety strategy

Hold: In your room or area, clear the halls

These terms, and the associated response, will be utilized throughout Alvin ISD and will be included in parent communication as various scenarios arise. It is important that you, as parents, also understand the processes associated with the terms.

Additional Measures Taken

  • The Board of Trustees has authorized additional law enforcement manpower for Alvin ISD campuses. You will notice an increased law enforcement presence on our campuses daily. (This will be accomplished by expanding the full time Alvin ISD Police Force and partnering with officers from multiple neighboring law enforcement agencies.)

  • We have inspected and verified our physical security systems and made upgrades where appropriate.

  • The Alvin ISD Police Department participated in updated training on best practices for reporting and response strategies for an active shooter.

  • Alvin ISD has installed and is utilizing a “lockdown” emergency notification system that is deployed to every facility (or campus) in the district.

  • Our Counselors and special programs professionals will intervene and offer broadened assistance for social, emotional, and psychological issues and support.

  • Alvin ISD is actively supporting the, “See Something, Say Something” campaign as it relates to safety and security. (See below)

  • Each campus leadership team engaged in a process focused on evaluating the caring, supportive, and nurturing environment provided to each student, and intentional action steps were identified to improve the campus climate.

  • The formal Alvin ISD School Safety Advisory Committee will continue to work throughout the year to evaluate possibilities to improve processes and implement additional measures that will provide students and staff with the highest levels of security.

  • The Alvin ISD Board of Trustees has authorized the hiring of non-ISD police officers to work our (18) elementary campuses on a contract (extra-job) basis. The hours will be 7:15am-3:45pm, Monday through Friday. Officers interested in working this extra job should contact Sgt. Ellen Stark via email or at 281-245-2967.

[Please note that all preventative measures are not shared
due to the sensitive nature of the information.]

Please be assured that Alvin ISD continues to take safety and security very seriously. We will continue to be vigilant for any opportunity to improve our policies and procedures and we ask for your input through our “Let’s Chat” platform. Every suggestion will be read and formally considered. Thank you for your ongoing partnership with Alvin ISD.

Standard Reunification Method

Circumstances may occur at the school that require parents to pick up their students in a formalized, controlled release. This process is called a Reunification and may be necessary due to weather, a power outage, hazmat or if a crisis occurs at the school. The Standard Reunification Method is a protocol that makes this process more predictable and less chaotic for all involved. Because a reunification is not a typical end of school day event, a reunification may occur at a different location than the school a student attends. If this location is another school, then those students may be subject to a controlled release as well.

See Something, Say Something

In Alvin ISD, the safety of our schools is paramount. We know that students and parents are our first line of defense for reporting unusual activity or safety concerns. Please let a teacher, school administrator, or the Alvin ISD Police Department (281) 331-2320 know if you see or hear anything of a concerning nature. If you believe it is an emergency, call 911. Thank you for helping to keep our schools and community safe!
