Safety

Bus Safety Tips

  • Video cameras (with audio) are utilized on all Alvin ISD School Buses. Students videoing on bus for ANY reason is in violation of District and Transportation Rules. School or law enforcement personnel may use this information as safety training material and/or evidence of bus safety rule violations.

  • School buses are designed for the safety of students. A major design factor is the compartment formed by each seat, which protects the students sitting on that bench seat. In order for this compartmentalization to work properly, proper seating is required. While seated, each student should face forward; the student's torso should be facing forward at all times, the student’s back should be flat against the back of the seat and the student’s bottom should be flat on the seat. (sitting straight back, upright against the seat.) Both feet and legs should be kept in front of their body.

For Parents

  • Stop for flashing red lights on a school bus, regardless of which direction you're headed.

  • Continue your trip once the bus has moved, the flashing lights stop flashing or the bus driver signals it's okay to pass.

  • Violations can lead to a $1,000 fine.

  • Obey the posted speed limit.

  • Fines double in school zones.

  • Keep an eye on children gathered at bus stops.

  • Watch for children who might dart across the street to catch the bus.

For Students

  • Respect your school bus driver and follow these rules:

  • Stand far back when you are waiting for the bus.

  • Sit still so the driver can pay attention to the road.

  • Look both ways if you have to cross the street after getting off the bus or wait for the driver to signal it's safe to cross the street.

School Bus Danger Zones

The most dangerous time for a student who rides the school bus is during the loading and unloading process. It is critical that students are visible to the driver and out of the bus danger zone when the bus is in motion. This important rule applies to loading and unloading both in the neighborhoods and at schools. If students are crossing the street, they should move immediately out of the danger zone and proceed at least 15 feet in front of the bus before crossing the street. NEVER CROSS THE STREET BEHIND THE BUS.

Student Safety

Alvin Independent School District is committed to providing a safe method of transportation for all eligible students. The privilege of transportation requires that students obey appropriate safety and conduct rules.

As a reminder, state law requires all vehicles to stop when approaching a school bus with the red loading lights flashing.

State law also states “a person commits an offense if the person intentionally disrupts, prevents, or interferes with the lawful transportation of children to or from school or an activity sponsored by a school on a vehicle owned or operated by a county or independent school district.”
