Alvin ISD Community,
The ongoing pursuit of Alvin ISD is to prepare every one of our students for the unknown opportunities their future holds. This goal is captivated by our commitment of: “2,340: Every Student, Every Day.” Meeting the needs of every student can only be accomplished through a meaningful partnership with our families and the greater community we serve.
This past spring, many of you were involved in the Alvin ISD Education Summits that were a collaborative effort between students, staff, business leaders, elected officials, and parents, as well as the Alvin-Manvel Area Chamber of Commerce and the Pearland Chamber of Commerce. Through open dialogue and a follow up focus group, collective aspirations for our students were identified and a formal Alvin ISD Learner Profile was developed. The skills identified in the Alvin ISD Learner Profile are represented in the outer ring of the graphic below.
This comprehensive process focused not only on the current needs of our students, but also on the skills that will make them successful, as they prepare for their post-secondary education and the workforce. It is clear that with a changing economy built heavily on technology, problem solving, and collaboration, schools must be purposeful in preparing students for their future demands.
10 individual skills were identified as critical for every student to possess prior to graduating from a high school in Alvin ISD. Additionally, participants developed descriptions that will help Alvin ISD teachers design lessons that not only teach course content, but also facilitate the intentional development of each skill.
For those that were not able to attend the Education Summits, the following videos were viewed as a way to spark discussion and conversation:
Tony Wagner’s 7 Survival Skills: http://vimeo.com/53913251
History of Education: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1GtFRDRQeA
Voice of the Active Learner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZ5Vy9BgSeY
As a dynamic learning organization, we commit to provide every student with engaging learning opportunities, that not only teach course content, but also compel students to apply learning in authentic ways that facilitate critical thinking, application of learning and skill development.
We truly appreciate every teacher, staff member, business leader, parent and student who provided dialogue, direction, and insight throughout this process. We also sincerely thank the Alvin-Manvel Area Chamber of Commerce, Pearland Chamber of Commerce and SHW Architects (now Stantec) for your partnership that helped bring our community together.
“2,340: Every Student, Every Day.”
