Alvin HS Reels in a New Competitive Sport

The Alvin HS Fishing Team cast their first line in the fall of 2018 and are already making waves. Two of the team members, sophomore Randy Thurston, and freshman Charlie Fox, will be representing Alvin High School at the Texas High School Bass Association State Championship at Cedar Creek Lake on May 11 and 12. The tournament will consist of 285 two-man teams from 9 regions across Texas. Charlie and Randy qualified for state during the Lake Sommerville Regional Tournament where they placed in the top 40%.

“The students have come together and have really made this fishing team a great addition to Alvin HS,” shared Mr. Hampton Fox, the AHS Fishing Team Sponsor.

Who’s driving the boats you ask? Behind the wheel we have dedicated captains including Alvin ISD Board Trustee Earl Humbird and John Wennerstrom, husband of Trustee Tiffany Wennerstrom.

“I was elated when Mr. Fox asked me to be a boat captain because the relationships we build while fishing will last a lifetime,” Trustee Humbird shared. Both Humbird and Wennerstrom were thoroughly impressed with the students who are putting every bit of heart and soul into the competition.

“This is more than a fishing tournament for them,” Wennerstrom shared. “We are learning from each other and interacting over our shared passion, and I believe this is such a great way for the community to be involved in our schools.”

Both Randy and Charlie play on the Alvin High School JV baseball team and can often be found fishing any of the local ponds to prepare as much as possible for state.

“I have made new friends I would not have met if I was not on this fishing team," Charlie Fox shared. “Fishing is like gambling. You don't always get the hand that you are looking for, but it's worth giving everything you got."
