Diabetes

Children who are diagnosed with diabetes are required to have a Diabetes Medical Management Plan completed each school year.  The school nurse is committed to working closely with families and health care providers to ensure the proper management of this condition to ensure the child's safety and well-being while at school.  Pursuant to HB 984, Alvin ISD ensures that nurses and designated unlicensed diabetes care assistants are trained annually.  Training includes recognizing symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, understanding the proper action to take if blood glucose levels are outside of target ranges, performing finger-sticks to check blood glucose levels, proper administration and documentation of glucagon and insulin, recognizing complications that require emergency assistance, and understanding the recommended schedules and food intake for meals and snacks for a student with diabetes.
