Mrs. JESSICA SHAWVER
I am Jessica Shawver and I am excited to be teaching Astronomy and Biology at Alvin High School this year! I am passionate about education and working towards creating life long learners in my classroom. I am the proudest member of the Fighting Texas Aggie class of 2010, where I majored in Wildlife Sciences. I also graduated from Lamar University in 2017 with a masters of Education in School Counseling. I will be starting my 9th year teaching this year. I encourage questions and exploration and yes, in science you don't always get it right the first time, that is how new discoveries are made and quite often also grounds sometimes for some of the best learning. Science is about the process and doing, science cannot just be learned with a textbook and pencil.
I live on a small farm (goats, cows, and chickens for now, though we will see what else I can convince my husband we NEED). I have 3 kids, the oldest is a 4th grader in Alvin ISD (she is doing jr FFA through Alvin High School so if you do cattle you may see her around at county fair) and I also have a 5 year old starting kindergarten (sad face) and a 3 year old, so this district and education is very important to me as it is the world my children will be in as well. I did not grow up here but I married an AHS graduate and the kids already want to come here, because daddy did (sorry, to his prior teachers that are still here). Outdoor activities are my favorite, especially now that I have children that stare at it in absolute wonder as they explore.
In science you need to " Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy" -- Ms. Frizzle the magic school bus. And though I do not have a bus that flies and shrinks (if anyone finds one please let me know as I am in the market for one). I do aim to have movement, mistakes, and doing in my room. I know the last 2 school years have been rough but I want you to know I am here, I see you, I'm ready to help, and together we can rock this school year. Please reach out with questions or concerns. It takes a villiage and I fully aim to work as a team to help my students be their best selves reguardless of the circumstances.
