The Emergent Bilingual Department
Advocating for all students and connecting with families of emergent bilingual students.
The Emergent Bilingual (EB) Department provides differentiated support to EB students.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
ESOL-English 1 and ESOL-English 2; are classes uniquely designed to assist newcomers with limited English language proficiency. In addition to the ESOL classes, recently arrived newcomers may receive additional support through the following elective classes: ESL-Reading 1 and 2; Language Development and Acquisition, and Practical Writing.
Sheltered Instruction (SI)
Sheltered instruction (SI) is offered to EBs in all core subjects. SI teachers have received training on effective methods and strategies that promote English proficiency. SI Teachers place a great deal of emphasis on academic vocabulary as they use the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) to provide the experiences that EBs need to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency.
