The ESL/ELL Department
Advocating for all students and connecting with families of English Language Learners.
The ESL/ELL Department provides differentiated support to ELs.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
ESOL-English 1 and ESOL-English 2; are classes uniquely designed to assist newcomers with limited English language proficiency. In addition to the ESOL classes, recently arrived newcomers may receive additional support through the following elective classes: ESL-Reading 1 and 2; Language Acquisition; and Practical Writing.
Sheltered Instruction (SI)
Sheltered instruction (SI) is offered to ELLs in all core subjects. SI teachers have received training on effective methods and strategies that promote English proficiency. SI Teachers place a great deal of emphasis on academic vocabulary as they use the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) to provide the experiences that ELLs need to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency.
