About Mr. NormanMr. Norman graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Houston in May 2009. He has been the Head Band Director at Alvin Junior High since the 2009-2010 School Year. In 2012, under his direction, the AJH Wind Ensemble achieved the first Sweepstakes rating at UIL Concert & Sightreading Contest since the school opened in 1968. Since then, the band program at Alvin Junior High has gained prestige and notoriety throughout Texas and the United States. The school's most advanced ensemble, now called the Symphonic Band, has continued to earn sweepstakes awards consistently since then. The band was also recognized nationally as a Commended Winner of the Mark of Excellence Award from the Foundation for Music Education in 2014, and again in 2017. Recently, the band was named as a state finalist in the TMEA Honor Band process, widely considered as one of the most difficult and highly regarded competitions in the nation. Mr. Norman was also named Alvin Junior High's "Teacher of the Year" for the 2016-2017 school year and was an innagural recipient of the "Alvin ISD Belives" award in 2019. Under Mr. Norman's leadership, the band has seen tremendous growth, from 120 members in 2009 to over 250 students. Alumni of the Alvin Junior High Band have become All-State Musicians, college music majors, and students who continue to play their instruments in college while pursuing other academic majors. Mr. Norman grew up in Boerne, TX, a small town northwest of San Antonio where he was an active participant in band as a tuba player in the concert and marching bands, and as a keyboardist in the jazz band, and performed with the Hill Country Youth Orchestra under the late Jay Dunahoo, past Executive Director of the Texas Music Adjudicators Association. At the University of Houston, Mr. Norman performed in the Spirit of Houston Cougar Marching Band, the Moores School of Music Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble, and the Moores School of Music Men's Choir. In 2019, Mr. Norman won a scholarship from the Texas Music Educators Association to puruse his Masters in Band Studies, which he is currently doing over the summer under the guidance of Dr. Matthew McInturff and Dr. Brian Gibbs at Sam Houston State University. In addition, he has studied with Mr. David Bertman, Mr. John Benzer, Ms. Bethann Adams, Mr. Denis Kidwell, Ms. Tye Anne Payne, and received mentor-ship from many leading music educators in the state of Texas. Mr. Norman is a member of Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and is also the Director of Traditional Music/Worship at League City United Methodist Church as well as ocassionally performing as a member of a brass quintet made up of local band directors. In his free time, Mr. Norman enjoys spending time with his family, serving at his church, and serving as an official class coordinator for Dave Ramsey's "Financial Peace University." Mr. Norman lives in League City with his family, his cat Felix, whom he rescued from a fellow teacher at Alvin Junior High, and his dog Clementine, who is also a rescue animal.
