Hi, Stevenson S.T.A.R.S!
My name is Elizabeth Recéndez and I am your school counselor. I live in Alvin with my husband, Javier and daughter Valerie. I graduated from the University of Houston-Clear Lake and then decided to pursue a degree in School Counseling. This is my eighth year as the counselor at Stevenson and I have enjoyed working with all students and staff. Before becoming the counselor, I taught Bilingual Pre-K and Kindergarten for 19 years.
The job of a counselor is to provide academic support, teach personal and social skills, and provide career guidance.
My day primarily consists of the following:
Classroom Guidance -- I rotate into classrooms each week teaching lessons on a variety of subjects such as decision making, conflict resolution ( Kelso's Choices), bully prevention, and friendship skills. I am also available to teachers by special requests if their students are struggling with a particular issue.
Small Groups -- I meet with students in small groups to work on specific skills. These students are placed in groups either by parent request or teacher referral. Parent permission is always required for students to be able to take part in a group. Please let me know if you think your child may benefit in a group this year.
Individual Group -- I also meet with students individually to talk about a particular struggle or problem they are having at school or at home. These struggles might include making friends, academic success, grief, anxiety, or other personal issues.
Family support -- I am also aware of many resources in the community that provide support for families. I can help find assistance for things like food, clothing, or utilities. If your family is going through a difficult situation, please contact me, and I will be happy to provide some resources that may help. If your family is in need of holiday support, please contact me a month in advance as our donors require family names to be submitted early.
