     Benefits of Reading

    1. Reading is exercise for the brain.
Reading strengthens neural pathways in the brain. Strong neural pathways produce increased brain power.

    2. Reading improves concentration.
Readers have to concentrate and focus when reading. Reading on a regular basis helps develop the ability to concentrate for longer periods of time.

    3. Reading teaches about the world we live in.
Through reading, we learn about people, places, and events outside of our own experience. We are exposed to ways of life, ideas, and beliefs about the world, which may be different from those which surround us.

    4. Reading increases success in school.
Increased reading increases student success in all subjects, not only reading, both in the short-term and long-term.

    5. Reading improves vocabulary and leads to more highly-developed language skills.
Readers unconsciously absorb additional information as they read, including how to structure sentences and use language effectively.

    6. Reading gives us a stockpile of background knowledge.
Research studies have found that we all learn new information by connecting it to background knowledge we already possess. Reading is a great way to increase such background knowledge.

    7. Reading increases imagination.
As we read, our brains translate the descriptions and events into visual images, thus increasing our imagination.

    8. Reading helps to develop empathy.
When we’re engaged in a story, we’re also imagining how the characters are feeling. We use our own experiences to imagine how we would feel in the same situation.

    9. Reading is a great form of entertainment.
Reading a book (or an ebook) in most environments is an incredibly convenient and relatively inexpensive entertainment option.

    10. Kids who read on a frequent basis get better at it.
Practice increases success in almost everything we do, and reading is no different.
