• While Covid-19 brought a halt to all UIL spring sports, there were many memorable moments for Alvin ISD athletics during the 2019-2020 school year.

The Manvel Lady Mavericks advanced to the Class 5A Region III Volleyball finals for the first time in school history. With a lineup featuring four all-state players, Susan Kennedy’s squad went undefeated in 16 district matches and then posted playoff victories over Madison, Texas City, Santa Fe and Cedar Park. The Shadow Creek girls also advanced to the Region III volleyball quarterfinals with playoff wins over Milby and Barbers Hill.

Making team history continued to be the theme throughout the fall and winter months for Alvin ISD.

Shadow Creek football not only made school history; they provided one of the best two year starts in Texas high school football history with their 28-22 state title victory over Denton Ryan in December. Brad Butler’s squad has gone an amazing 31-1 during their first two seasons with back-to-back trips to the state finals. The Sharks posted playoff victories over Port Arthur Memorial, Hutto, Foster, Manor and San Antonio Wagner, before outlasting Ryan in a championship clash that wasn’t decided until the game’s final play.

Shadow Creek varsity basketball also made land breaking playoffs runs on both sides of the court. The Shadow Creek girls won their first district title and then collected postseason wins over Houston Austin, Galveston Ball and Foster to advance to the regional semifinals.

The Sharks shared the district boys’ co-championship with Hightower and then went on to post playoff wins over Houston Austin, Nederland, Madison and Manor to advance to the regional finals.

The Manvel Girls also made it to the regional hoop quarterfinals, defeating Northside and Friendswood during the first two rounds.

Soccer managed to almost complete their regular seasons before the play stoppage with both Manvel and Shadow Creek varsity boys and girls’ squads securing playoff berths.

The softball teams from Alvin and Shadow Creek were also off to their best starts in team history and likewise for Shark baseball when the UIL was forced to cancel the remaining slate.

The AISD Athletic Department is taking a look back at the most memorable moments by student-athletes and teams over the last decade (2010-2019). Today’s feature includes the regional semifinalist run of the 2015 Alvin Lady Yellowjackets’ Softball team.

The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets were on their way to yet another deep run in the softball playoffs in 2015. Carla Newsom’s squad proved time and again they could both dominate opponents and also beat them in dramatic fashion, if the occasion called for such.

Case in point came against Rayburn in district play. Bailey Thomas walloped a pair of home runs and drove in five RBI’s, while Jordan Banda also went deep with a grand slam homer in a 15-0 run-ruled victory. Then against Dobie during spring break, Alvin was down to its final out with the tying run on base.

Vanessa Segura fought through a tough at-bat, fouling off 10 pitches, before launching a walk-off game-winning two-run homer over the left field wall at Lady Jacket field to give Alvin a thrilling 5-4 come-from-behind triumph.

The Lady Jackets took those two formulas into the postseason and edged La Porte 3-0 in the bi-district round behind Kaitlyn Males’ shutout and Alyssa Moscot’s two RBI’s.

Alvin then swept Clear Falls in the best-of-three area playoff series by 6-0 and 16-2 scores with Males and Rachel Hertenberger combining for 12 shutout innings in the circle and Jordan Pike driving in six runs. Marisa Sosa also had a big series with a home run and 4-for-4 performance in game two.

Sosa also delivered clutch base running in game one of the best-of-three region quarter series against Baytown Sterling, dashing home from third base in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Alvin a 3-2 victory. Sterling then evened the series by the same 3-2 score in 10 innings in game two and led 1-0 late in the third and deciding game.

However, Amy Alexander came to the rescue with the junior first baseman drilling a three-run homer to dead center field in the top of the sixth inning for a 3-1 Lady Jackets’ lead. Males later overcame a no-out, bases-loaded threat in the bottom of the seventh by the Lady Rangers to send Alvin to the region semis against Katy.

Banda wiped out a 1-0 Katy lead with a three-run homer to center field for an eventual 3-1 victory and Alvin took a surprising 1-0 series lead. While the Lady Tigers came back to win both games two and three to end Alvin’s season, it failed to dampen another remarkable Lady Jacket softball season, where they went 22-8 overall and 9-3 as the runner-up seed from 22-6A.

The AISD Athletic Department is taking a look back at the most memorable moments by student-athletes and teams over the last decade (2010-2019). Today’s feature includes the incredible state title run of the 2011 Manvel Mavericks Football first ever run to the state finals.

They had come close the year before with a berth to the state quarterfinals, only to be denied a trip to state with a 44-28 defeat to La Marque. Once 2011 rolled around, one thing became pretty clear:

The Manvel Mavericks were on a mission and nothing was going to stop them from gaining that magical berth.

The Mavs steamrolled their way through non-district foes Willowridge, Fort Bend Austin, Goose Creek Memorial and Sharpstown, outscoring the foursome by a staggering 189-31 count.  Manvel then opened 24-4A play by knocking off nemesis La Marque 29-14 and went on to cruise to the 24-4A title with a perfect 6-0 mark.   After the win over the Cougars, only Dawson (44-21) managed to come within three touchdowns of Kirk Martin’s Hoka Hey crew during league play.

While experiencing a stern test from El Campo in the bi-district round, the Mavs prevailed by a 35-21 count and then proceeded to dominate Houston Yates (53-18) and Dayton (49-10) in the area and regional semifinal playoff dates that followed to set up another showdown with La Marque.

Manvel also got off to a fast start against the Cougars, erupting for a 31-14 halftime lead.  La Marque rallied in the second half with a pair of touchdowns to close within 31-28.  However, Mavs’ quarterback Shane McCarley converted a fourth-and-15 situation with a clutch 25-yard scoring strike to Kaylon Melancon with three minutes left in the contest to secure an eventual 38-35 triumph. The win paved the way for a state semifinal clash with Corpus Christi Calallen in the Alamodome.

While the win over La Marque came in dramatic fashion, the Manvel/Calallen collision proved to be even more of a heart stopper.  McCarley and Melancon hooked up again, this time from 36 yards out to tie the contest at 28-28 with 2:33 remaining.  On Calallen’s next offensive series, Carlos Thompson intercepted a pass.

The contest still appeared to be headed for overtime with time running out on McCarley’s 30-yard incomplete pass to Corey Seymour at the CA 16-yard line, but the Wildcats were flagged for roughing McCarley.  With the penalty allowing the Mavs an extra snap, Josh Martinez drilled a 25-yard field goal to give the Mavs a 31-28 come-from-behind victory, setting off a wild celebration by both the Manvel bench and Mavs’ fans at the Alamodome.

The Mavs then headed to Arlington for the State 4A title game against Aledo and almost pulled off more dramatics before falling by a 48-29 count at AT&T Stadium.  However, the defeat couldn’t dampen what was the first of two history-making 15-1 campaigns for Manvel Maverick Football.

The AISD Athletic Department pays tribute today to Joe Lipscomb

The AISD Athletic Department joins the Alvin community in mourning the loss of Alvin resident Joe Lipscomb. Lipscomb was a long time supporter of AISD athletics and served as the public dress announcer for both Yellowjacket (1991-95) and Hitchcock Football teams.

Lipscomb was more than a just a fan, though. He had an absolute passion for student-athletes and touched many lives. It was a familiar site to see him to give a young lady or man an encouraging word following a game, no matter what the outcome was.

Known affectingly by them as “Mr. Lipscomb,” he also played a big part in many of them receiving scholarships to play at the collegiate level. One of his biggest thrills was watching the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets win the 2008 State 5A Softball Championship.

Lipscomb lived in Alvin for the past 46 years with wife Nancy, raised three children and enjoyed several grandchildren. He also served as a bailiff for several years at the Brazoria County Courthouse

His stories about watching such Friday night legends as Doak Walker, Norm Bulaich, Earl Campbell and Thurman Thomas would easily become contagious to the nearest listener. “I think it’s just the enthusiasm of the kids itself, the coaches, the cheerleaders, the band, the entire atmosphere of Texas high school football,” he said, explaining his love for the sport.

Working in the North Texas suburb of Garland in the 1950’s, the return journey home to Hitchcock would require an evening stop to the nearest stadium with the lights on. The site never mattered. The only mandatory elements were an 8 p.m. kickoff with 22 kids on the field. That passion would also take Lipscomb on marathon excursions to Austin, Dallas, Waco, Round Rock, College Station and Odessa through the next several decades.

“It’s been a great life to have a family that’s been willing to let me do the things I have,” Lipscomb said. “It’s taken the place of fishing and hunting and been something I thoroughly enjoyed.”

The AISD Athletic Department is taking a look back at the most memorable moments by student-athletes and teams over the last decade (2010-2019). Today’s feature includes a look back at the state title runs of 2015 and 2017 Manvel Boys’ Track Teams.

Looking back at the Manvel Varsity Boys’ Track teams of the mid 2010’s, saying the team had a flair for the dramatic would be the understatement of the decade. The Mavericks delivered exclamation points from both their 2015 and 2017 state title performances and even when they barely missed making it a three-peat with a runner-up showing in 2016, it took a furious comeback from Desoto to keep it from happening.

Port Arthur Memorial held a five-point lead over Manvel in the team standings entering the 4X400 relay, but the foursome of D`Vaughn Pennamon, Reggie Hemphill, Joshua Martin and Howard Fields III turned in a second place performance in the event to help the Mavs overtake the Titans for the crown. Manvel collected a meet best 55 points, followed by Memorial’s 44-point total and New Braunsfel Canyon was third with 40 points.

Deontay Anderson also captured gold for Manvel in the 200 meters, while Hemphill combined with Christion Childs, Pennamon and Anderson for a silver in the 4X200 race and D`Erig King teamed with Jarren Colbert, Anderson and Pennamon for a bronze medal in the 4X100 relay.

Manvel appeared to be on the verge of repeating at the University of Texas at Austin’s Mike A. Myers Stadium in 2016, only to watch the tables turned with Desoto rallying from a 12-point deficit with a second place performance in the 4X400 to edge the Mavs in the team standings by a 54-50 count.

Unfazed by the near miss, though, Kendrick Crumedy’s squad returned the trophy back to Manvel at the 2017 meet and did it in record-breaking fashion.

With Lawrence Murray teaming with Kameron Scott, London Harris and Fields, Mavs fought off a stiff challenge from Lancaster to win the 4X400 for their second team title in three years. The finish also gave Manvel the highest team total in Class 5A boys’ track history with 85 points, 22 points ahead of runner-up PA Memorial.

Caleb Jolivette and Fields also brought home gold medals in the 100 and 400-meter races, respectively, while Michael Tolds captured silver medal honors in the high jump.

“It’s awesome, because our kids pride themselves on winning the hard stuff, the events that other guys don’t like to run,” Crumedy said. “To win the meet this way was priceless. As a competitor, you don’t want it any other way. You want to win the hardest thing on the track.

“We should have won it last year and we didn’t, but the kids came back hard and my hat is off to them.”

The AISD Athletic Department is taking a look back at the most memorable moments by student-athletes and teams over the last decade (2010-2019). Today’s feature includes the incredible Regional Playoff Semi-finalist run of the 2013 Alvin Lady Yellowjacket Volleyball team

The 2013 volleyball season of the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets is memorable not just for the team making its first appearance at the regional tournament since 2000, but also for the program coming a long way from a tough 2010 campaign, when the team finished winless in district play.

Alvin begin the long climb back in 2011, though, posting six more wins overall and three in the district win column, while advancing to the playoffs in 2012 and closing the season as area finalists.

When the 2013 season soon rolled around, it soon became clear that the Lady Yellowjackets were sporting one of the best teams in the Houston area. Alvin opened the year with a four-set victories over tough Clear Springs and Clear Brook squads and went on to make an impressive showing at the Rouse Classic and then won the Dickinson Gator Classic the following week with setter/outside hitter Elyssa Purcell twice breaking the team ace record with 15 aces against West Brook and Sweeny in respective matches.

The Lady Jackets proceeded to send notice to defending 22-5A champion Pearland that the league title would soon be changing hands with a convincing four set victory at home and then a 22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 24-26 and 16-14 five set triumph a moth later in Pearland with Elyssa Purcell (52 assists, 20 digs), Madison Andrews (22 kills, 21 digs) and Kelsey Purcell (18 kills, 14 digs) all delivering double double performances in the match.

Alvin ultimately went through the district with a perfect 14-0 mark to win the league title and started the playoffs with a sweep over West Brook and a four set victory over Clear Lake in the area round.

Libero Taylor Horsfall provided a match-high 22 digs against Lake, several of which saw the sophomore diving to the floor to keep balls in play.

The Lady Jackets then followed with a 25-20, 25-13 and 25-13 regional quarterfinal sweep over Dulles to advance to the regional tourney. The victory also helped Alvin avenge being eliminated from the playoffs by the Lady Vikings during the previous season.

While falling to Cy Fair in the regional semifinals, Alvin still came away with an impressive 39-6 record and several memorable achievements. Middle blocker Meagan Graham was named the scholar athlete of the year by the Houston Touchdown Club, while Elyssa Purcell received honorable mention All-American honors by AVCA the following year. Horsfall would go on to break both school and conference records at Tulsa University this past fall and lead all Division I liberos in digs.

The AISD Athletic Department is taking a look back at the most memorable moments by student-athletes and teams over the last decade (2010-2019). Today’s feature includes the incredible state title run of the 2013-2014 Manvel Lady Mavericks’ Basketball team.

Making a deep run in the girls’ basketball playoffs was nothing new at Manvel High School. The team had make back-to-back appearances at the regional tournament in 2011 and 2012 and advanced to the region quarters in 2013. However, the previous hurdles would soon be cleared, as the Lady Mavs came out the next season on a mission.

They went through preseason play with only two losses and then won the 22-5A title again with a perfect 14-0 mark. The Lady Mavs followed with impressive playoff victories over La Porte (85-22), Hightower (72-51), North Shore (60-41), Cy Ranch (56-33) and Cy Woods (58-33). The region finals’ triumph over Woods advanced the Manvel girls into the state tournament at the University of Texas at Austin’s Erwin Center for the first time in school history.

The Lady Mavs easily took care of business in the state semifinals with a 69-38 win over Plano West to set up a colossal rematch with powerhouse Duncanville in the state finals. Duncanville entered the contest with an incredible 105-game winning streak.

In the teams’ previous meeting at the McDonald’s Texas Invitational in November, the Lady Mavs held a 14-point halftime lead, only to see the Pantherettes rally in the second half.

While Duncanville held a 19-15 lead at the break and also led 49-42 early in the final period, it would be the Manvel girls who delivered the comeback story this time around with several Pantherettes running into major foul trouble.

Free throws by Jordan Hosey and Amieya Jackson joined with Rangie Bessard and Jonee Jones’ buckets to cut the margin to one, while post Brianna Turner exploded to the hoop with a fast break layup to give Manvel the lead for the first time at 52-51 with 1:52 left.

Turner, who earned all-tournament most valuable player honors, would also go on to be named the National Gatorade Women’s Athlete of the Year.

Manvel held the upper hand the rest of the way, outscoring Duncanville by a 6-2 margin to claim their first state championship in school history.

“Good for them. I’m happy for our girls, because they will go off to college and always be known as state champions,” head coach Bryan Harris said following the game. There’s got to be a first time for everything. This hoka hey (chant) you hear (in the stands) is a special place to be.”

So was the 2013-2014 season a special place to be for the Lady Mavs. They carved out a monster 38-2 record and also brought home the first ever basketball crown in AISD athletic history.

The AISD Athletic Department is taking a look back at the most memorable moments by student-athletes and teams over the last decade (2010-2019). Today’s feature includes two athletes who became the most decorated individuals in their sports for their schools: Kynnedy Flannel & Jack Armstrong.

When it came to raising the bar in their respective AISD sports over the last decade, two names come easily to mind: Kynnedy Flannel (Alvin High School, track and field) and Jack Armstrong (Manvel High School, swimming) with both individuals capturing five state medals and also becoming the most decorated medalists in both their schools and AISD athletic history.

Both have also taken their talents to the collegiate level with Flannel attending the University of Texas at Austin and Armstrong attending Auburn University.

Flannel first made her mark at the 2017 Class 6A state meet in Austin by winning both the 100 (11.43 seconds) and 200 yard dashes (23.34 seconds) and then setting the 6A record in the long jump with an incredible leap of 21 feet and 2.75 inches. The 30 points Flannel compiled helped Alvin finish seventh in the team standings.

“It was really unexpected,” said Flannel, of the state record jump. “I was really jumping badly in my first couple of ones. But I got back warm and just went for it. It was just so surreal. I just hit the take off board and went through the regular motions I usually do.”

While not being able to compete in the long jump at the 2018 state meet, Flannel went on win the 100 and 200-yard dashes again and completed her high school career with an impressive award list that included the 2017 Texas Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year, the Houston Chronicle’s Track and Field athlete of the year, All-American track and field honors by American Family Insurance/USA Today and the Texas Track and Field Coaches Association girls’ track and field athlete of the year.

Armstrong carries a strong high school swimming resume, as well, starting with a bronze medal as a sophomore in 2017.  Armstrong followed that up by winning both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events at the 2018 state meet.

The best was still yet to come, though, at the 2018 state meet, as Armstrong set the 50-yard state record in prelims at 20.10 seconds and then went on to maintain his dominance the next day in finals with a 20.20 gold medal finish.

As amazing as his 50 free exploits were, however, Armstrong elevated things even a notch higher for his gold medal in the 100 free. He not only shattered his own 2018 state record of 44.57 seconds in the event, Armstrong’s 43.96 performance was over two seconds lower than silver medalist William Corona, of Georgetown.

“It was just incredible to watch,” said Armstrong’s coach, Rick Veal. “He was a full body length (in the 100) out in front of the seven other swimmers. He now owns five of the six highest times (combined in Texas).

“Jack was just more relaxed and confident this year, knowing what he could achieve.”
