    Lady Yellowjackets receive 10 All-District selections – The Area Playoff Finalist Alvin Lady Yellowjackets received a total of 10 player selections to the All-District 23-6A Softball team. Junior pitcher Matti Matthews joined junior catcher Abby Ptak, senior shortstop Reagan Jones, junior outfielder Kiley Huffman, senior utility player Bri Wetmore and senior at-large pick Roni Harrison (first baseman) on the first team, while junior infielder Kamryn Deleon and junior outfielder Jocelyn Brisceno earned second team nods and Mary Barber and Alana Ramos gained honorable mention status. The Lady Jackets went 21-10 for the season and finished the regular season as the runner-up in district, blanking Dickinson 11-0 in the bi-district playoffs. Alvin has made the postseason 26 of last 27 seasons, which is a school record.

    Haynes makes history in wheelchair division at state – Manvel Mavericks’ senior Sammy Haynes made history with both his gold medal and overall standout performance at the State Track and Field meet last weekend in Austin. Haynes blazed to victory in the boys’ 100 meters at 16.79 seconds and also captured a bronze medal in the 400 meters race at 1:06.56, while placing fifth in the shot put as well. With the two achievements, Haynes becomes the first AISD student athlete ever to win a state championship and win multiple medals as well.

    Lady Sharks capture state gold medal in 4X400 relay – The Shadow Creek Sharks’ girls’ track team captured the gold medal in the 4X400 relay at the Class 6A State Track and Field meet last weekend in Austin. The Lady Sharks’ foursome of Mackenzie Collins, Madyson Thurmond, Tiffany Mugubi and Nia Parks delivered a winning time of 3:40.75, giving Shadow Creek back-to-back state titles in the event. Other places for Shadow Creek at state featured Theo Randle finishing fifth in the boys’ discus toss, Parks with a fifth place in the girls’ 400 meters, Thurmond, Aleia Peterson, Skylar Moody and Sydney Bryant with a fourth place in the girls’ 4X200 relay and Jay`Vion Anderson, Brian Nelson, Jacorey Watson and Rahim Hutchins with a sixth place in the boys’ 4X200 relay.

     

     

     

    SC Softball Girls gain 10 All-District picks – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks gained a total of 10 selections to the All-District 23-6A Softball team. Senior outfielder Moriah Polar and sophomore Isabella Ramirez (at-large) were both first team picks, while freshman Cayla Warner was named the newcomer of the year. Second team nods went to junior pitcher Leila Heredia, senior first baseman Sydney Boudreaux, junior shortstop Kiersten Salinas, sophomore outfielder Hannah Baimbridge and sophomore utility player Mackenzy Hardin, while Hannah Boudreaux and Lillanna Diaz each gained honorable mention status.

     

     

     

     

     

    Iowa Colony Pioneer Report

     

    Lewis becomes Pioneers’ first ever state champion – Ashtyn Lewis became the first state champion in Iowa Colony athletic school history last weekend in Austin with the freshman delivering a gold medal performance of 55.74 seconds in the girls’ 400 meters race at the Class 4A State Track and Field meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Lewis was also part of the first IC relay team ever to medal at state, combining with Arius Williams, Hannah Young and Bailey Wilturner to capture the bronze medal in the girls’ 4X400 relay at 3:55.36. The IC girls’ 4X200 relay of Williams, Young, Young, Adrianna Murry and Wilturner placed fifth and Ian Hill was fifth in the boys’ 400 as well.

    Yellowjacket Baseball tops Hastings – Alvin Yellowjacket Baseball rolled to a 20-0 victory over Hastings, Tuesday night in Alief in 23-6A Baseball action. The Jackets improved to 12-13-1 overall and 8-3 in district with the victory. Easton Winfield and Boston Lee belted first inning home runs to pace Alvin and both individuals also provided three hits and three RBI’s. Jayden Rodriguez also had a three hit game and Cooper Williams and Zane Bailey also had two RBI’s and two hits apiece. The Jackets next host Hastings, Friday at Nolan Ryan Field at 6 p.m.

     

     

     

     

    Manvel Maverick Report

     

    Mavericks edge Texas City – The Manvel Mavericks got a solid pitching performance from Dylan Martinez and the Mavericks edged Texas City by a 3-2 count Tuesday night in Manvel to pick up their first win in 18-5A Baseball play. The Mavs also improved to 10-16 overall. Martinez went the distance on the mound, allowing six hits and one earned run, while striking out six. Byron Robinson went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and a triple and Kyle Janacek drilled a two-run single in the fourth inning, which gave Manvel the upper hand for good. The Mavs next play at Texas City, Friday at 6 p.m.

     

     

     

    Shadow Creek Shark Report

     

    Brown tosses perfect game – Blaine Brown tossed a perfect game on the mound and the Shadow Creek kept their playoff hopes alive in the 23-6A Baseball race with a 10-0 victory at Alief Taylor, Tuesday night. The Sharks improved to 6-5 in district and 13-12-2 overall. Brown struck out 12 in the contest and received great defensive plays from Kristian Dawson and Princeton Hawks to keep the no-hitter and perfect game intact. The Sharks next host Taylor, Friday in Pearland at 6 p.m.

     

     

     

     

    Iowa Colony Pioneer Report

     

    Iowa Colony rallies for 6-5 victory – Iowa Colony rallied for a 6-5 victory over Stafford in 26-4A Baseball action, Tuesday in Iowa Colony. The win was the Pioneers’ second in the last three games and improved their district record to 3-7. Xavier Ledet drove in a pair of runs, while Cayden Aguilar and Aden Saucedo drew bases loaded walks for RBI’s. The Pioneers took the lead for good in the fifth with two runs following a Stafford error. Iowa Colony next host Columbia, April 25 at 6 p.m.

    Alvin Relay teams advance to area – The Alvin High School boys’ 4X 100 and 4X200 relays teams earned area berths with third and fourth place finishes at the District 23-6A Meet last weekend. Other highlights for Alvin at the meet included Randi Beckham finishing in fifth place in the girls’ 400 meters and Finn Madding breaking his own school record in the discus toss with a sixth place throw of 144 feet.

     

    Lady Yellowjackets top Shadow Creek in softball – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets captured a 12-6 victory over Shadow Creek in 23-6A Softball action, Tuesday night in Pearland. Alvin improved to 17-8 overall and 7-2 in district with the victory. Kiley Huffman went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with two RBI’s and three runs scored, while winning pitcher Matti Matthews went 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored. Reagan Jones was also 3-for-5 with one RBI’s and two runs scored and Jocelyn Brisceno was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI’s. The Lady Jackets next host Elsik, Friday at 6:45 p.m.

    Lady Mavericks capture 18-5A Track and Field crown – The Manvel Lady Mavericks captured top team honors at the 18-5A Track and Field meet earlier this week in Angleton. Meet highlights featured the Lady Mav relays winning the 4X100, 4X200 and 4X200 events. The Manvel girls will next compete at the area meet, April 19 at Barbers Hill High School.

    Lady Pioneers win26-4A track and field championship – Competing in their first ever district meet, the Iowa Colony Lady Pioneers delivered a first place team performance at the 26-4A meet this week in Stafford. Iowa Colony compiled 151 points to edge runner-up Columbia’s 132-point total. Katherine Canchola won the 1600 meter event with a time of 5:53, while the 1600 meter relay of Mariah Samarco, Bailey Wilturner, Je’Dyn Parker and Ashtyn Lewis also emerged victorious with a time of 4:13.45. Lewis sprinted to victory as well in the girls’ 400 at 55.67 seconds. The Iowa Colony girls next compete at the area meet, April 19 in Bay City.

    Alvin Baseball edges Shadow Creek – The Alvin Yellowjackets edged Shadow Creek by a 4-3 count in 23-6A Baseball action, Tuesday at Nolan Ryan Field in Alvin. The Jackets improved to 8-13-2 overall and 4-3 in district with the victory. Cooper Williams picked up the win on the mound with nine strikeouts and one earned run in a complete game performance. Zane Bailey also drove in a run with a first inning RBI single to center field. The Jackets resume their district series with the Sharks, Thursday in Pearland at 3 p.m.

     

    Four Alvin student athletes ink collegiate letters – Four Alvin High School student athletes inked collegiate letters of intent during the spring signing period on Wednesday at the AHS Competition Gym.     10 Sharks receive all-district hoop honors – A total of 10 Shadow Creek players received All-District 23-6A Basketball honors. On the boys’ side, Kaden Tate was named the defensive player of the year, while first team honors went to Chase Cain, Michael Collins and Julian Cullier for the bi-district finalist Sharks. On the girls’ side, Kamryn Phillips and Nyla Price earned first team honors, while second teamers included Alana Trail, Kyndall Drones, Krislyn Biscette and Peyton Holmes for the regional quarterfinalist Lady Sharks.

    Pioneers gain non-district baseball win over Pasadena High – Iowa Colony Baseball earned a 10-1 non-district victory over Pasadena High on March 28. Dyson Nevels led the way by going 2-for-3 with four RBI’s, while Landon Brown and Aden Saucedo collected two hits apiece.     Lady Yellowjacket Powerlifters place fourth at state meet – The Alvin High School Girls’ Powerlifting team turned in a fourth-place team performance at the THSWPA Class 6A State meet, March 15 in Frisco. Senior Eliana Hernandez won a silver medal in the 259 class and broke state records in both the squats and overall lift total, while Denisse Limon also captured silver in the 132 class and set a new state mark in squats. Also, impressive performances for Alvin at state included Hannah Casas taking third in the 132 class and also receiving the THSWPA Class 6A scholarship, Maya Ruiz placing third in the 259+ class, Lexi Rodriguez placing fourth in the 114 class and Estefanny Lino placing fourth in the 105 class. Alvin just finished a point out of second place in the team standings with 20 points.

     

    Yellowjacket Baseball tops Strake Jesuit – The Alvin Yellowjackets improved to 3-0 in District 23-6A Baseball play with a 5-2 victory over Strake Jesuit, Tuesday night at Nolan Ryan Field. In Alvin. Cooper Williams picked up the win on the mound with the southpaw hurler striking out 11 and walking only three, while allowing five hits. Julian Cantu drove in a pair of runs with a two-run single to give Alvin the upper hand for good, while Boston Lee and Jayden Rodriguez also supplied clutch two-out key RBI hits. The Jackets (7-10-1 overall) next resume their series with the Crusaders, Friday in Houston at 6 p.m.

     

    Lady Yellowjackets roll to district softball win over Elsik – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets rolled to a 15-0 victory at Alief Elsik in 23-6A Softball action, Tuesday night. Alvin improved to 12-8 overall and 3-1 in district with the win. Marlee Vanness combined with Matti Matthews and Reagan Jones for a no-hitter in the pitching circle, while the Lady Jackets put the game away early with a 10-run first inning. Jones belted a two-run homer over the left-field fence, while Abby Ptak provided a bases-loaded triple and Matthews also stole home plate. The Lady Jackets next play at Alief Hastings, Friday at 6:45 p.m.

    Mavericks’ Basketball players receive TABC honors – A trio of basketball players from the Manvel High School Basketball programs were honored by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches recently. Senior Mavericks’ guard Jamari McDowell received both Class 5A Boys’ All-State and All-Region III accolades from the TABC, while the Lady Mavericks’ duo of Peyton Cooks and Chadaria Tingle were both named to the All-Region 3-5A Girls’ Region squad. The 18-5A Champion Manvel girls advanced to the regional quarterfinals with wins over Port Neches Groves and Willowridge, while the 18-5A Co-Champion MHS boys competed in the second playoff round after defeating Port Neches Groves in bi-district.

    Phillips named to TABC All-Region team – Shadow Creek’s Kamryn Phillips was named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 6A All-Region III Girls’ Basketball Team. Phillips held the Lady Sharks earn the runner-up seed in 23-6A and advance to the regional quarterfinals with playoff wins over Clear Creek in bi-district and Deer Park in the area round.

    Greene named to TABC All-Region team – Iowa Colony Pioneers’ guard Robert Greene was named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 4A Boys’ All-Region IV Basketball team. Greene helped the Pioneers capture the runner-up playoff seed in just their inaugural year on the court and advance to the area round of the playoffs with the Pioneers defeating Brookshire Royal in bi-district.

    Peterson named to Bayou Bowl – Alvin Yellowjackets’ Senior Fullback Dayshawn Peterson was named to the Annual Bayou Bowl Football Classic, which will be played June 10th at Barber Hills Stadium in Mont Belvieu with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Eastern New Mexico University signee rushed for 1,469 yards and 17 touchdowns, becoming the fourth Alvin running back to rush for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. Peterson was also selected to the Texas Sportswriters Association’s Class 6A All-State First Team, to the All-District 23-6A First team and to the All-Greater Houston Area Football First team this past season.

     

    Alvin Powerlifting Girls capture their fifth straight region title – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets captured their fifth straight Region 4 Division I Championship, Feb. 25 at Alvin High School. Alvin compiled 62 points to finish well ahead of Dickinson’s 34 point second place total, while Conroe was third with 20. The Lady Jackets also broke a total of nine meet records, which included Denise Limon with a 430 pound squat and 990 overall pound total in the 132 class; Hannah Casas with a 230 pound bench press in the 132 class; Isabella Recendez with a 230 pound bench press and 940 overall pound total in the 148 class; and Eliana Hernandez with a 565 pound squat, 290 pound bench press, 455 pound deadlift and 1,310 overall pound total in the 259 class. Alvin will next compete at the state meet, March 15 in Frisco.

    Mavericks rally past Needville – The Manvel Mavericks rallied from an early three-run deficit to defeat Needville 7-4 in non-district baseball action, Tuesday in Manvel. The Mavs improved to 4-2 with the victory and were led by Byron Robinson going 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI’s and Stephen Lewis’ complete game performance on the mound with the right-hander allowing only four hits and striking out four. Gabriel Roberts and Jaiden Rodriguez also had a pair of hits and Cristian Lara drove in two RBI’s. The Mavs next compete at the Baytown Lee Tournament this weekend.

     

     

    Playoff Manvel Basketball teams combine for 14 all-district player selections – The Manvel Lady Mavericks and Mavericks Basketball teams combined for 12 player selections to their respective All-District 18-5A squads. Manvel also swept the coach of the year honors on both sides with Jhared Marshall receiving the girls’ honor and Chris Wilson collecting the boys’ hardware. Jamari McDowell was named the boys’ MVP, while the Lady Mavs’ duo of Peyton Cooks and Chadria Tingle captured the girls’ offensive and defensive player of the year awards, respectively. Other first team picks for the district champion and regional quarterfinalist Lady Mavs included Ja`Naya Scott, Akyla Fields and Allyson Ferguson, while second team nods went to Aiyana Sam, Jackie Oba and Taylor Younger. McDowell was joined by Manvel teammates R.J. Hurd and Ruben Doria on the boys’ first team and Kaden Smith was a second team pick along with Kolin Polk and Fourest Mills. The Manvel boys closed their season as 18-5A Co-Champions, who earned the top seed in a playoff with Texas City and then edged Port Neches-Groves in the bi-district playoffs.

    Sharks earn four all-district hoop nods – The Bi-District Finalist Shadow Creek Sharks received a total of four all-district selections to the 23-6A Boys’ Basketball team, all of which were named to the first team. Kaden Tate was selected as the district’s defensive most valuable player and was joined by Shark teammates Michael Collins, Julian Cullier and Chase Cain in making the squad. The Sharks went 23-11 overall and finished with runner-up seed in 23-6A with an 11-3 mark.

    IC Baseball rolls past Pasadena – The Iowa Colony Baseball squad rolled to an 11-1 home win over Pasadena High, Monday in Iowa Colony. Landon Brown picked up the win on the mound and joined Aiden Saucedo with a pair of hits. The Pioneers, who improved to 3-3 for the season, next host Houston Chavez, Saturday at noon.

    Peterson named to TSWA All-State Football team – Alvin Yellowjackets’ Senior Fullback Dayshawn Peterson was named to the Blue Bell/Texas Sportswriters Association’s Class 6A All-State Football First Team Offensive squad. Peterson becomes the first Yellowjacket football player since Gary Keithley in 1968 to earn such a first team distinction. The Eastern New Mexico University signee rushed for 1,469 yards and 17 touchdowns, becoming the fourth Alvin running back to rush for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. Peterson was also selected to the All-District 23-6A First team and to the All-Greater Houston Area Football First team this past season.

    Lady Mavericks roll to first round playoff win – The Manvel Lady Mavericks rolled to a 71-29 victory over Port Neches Groves in the Class 5A Girls’ Bi-District Basketball Playoffs, Feb. 13 at Lee College in Baytown. Manvel (28-7) went on a 20-2 second quarter run to put the game early and advance to the area round against Willowridge, Friday at Shadow Creek High School in Pearland at 6 p.m. Payton Cooks and Akyla Fields paced the Lady Mavs with 13 points apiece and Aiyana Sam added 12 points. Manvel also moved into a first place tie with Texas City in the 18-5A Boys’ Standings with a 72-52 victory at Santa Fe, Tuesday night to force a seeding playoff with the Stings, Friday in Santa Fe at 6 p.m.

     

     

    Armstrong, O’Neal named to all-state team – Mavericks’ linemen Kenyon Armstrong and Jalen O’Neal were both named to the honorable mention list in Class 5A for the Blue Bell/Texas Sportswriters Association’s All-State Football team. The duo helped the Mavs advance to the playoffs for the 13th straight season, which is an AISD athletic record for football. Armstrong and O’Neal both received first all-district honors in 18-5A for the Mavs, who advanced to the area round of the playoffs.

    Lady Sharks capture bi-district and area playoff hoop wins – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks have come up with a pair of victories so far in the Class 6A Girls’ Basketball Playoffs. The Lady Sharks topped Clear Creek, 49-40 on Feb. 14 in bi-district playoff action in Alvin behind 18 points by Kamryn Phillips and 12 points by Payton Holmes. Shadow Creek then edged Deer Park by a 40-31 count, Thursday at Rayburn High School in Pasadena with Phillips pumping in 16 points and Nyla Price adding 10 points. The Lady Sharks will next meet the winner of Summer Creek and Alief Hastings in the regional quarterfinals next week. The Shadow Creek Boys will be opening playoff action on Feb. 21 with a bi-district meeting with Clear Springs at Clear Creek HS in League City at 6 p.m. The Sharks enter the contest as the second seed from 23-6A.

     

    Shark Trio named to all-state football – The Shadow Creek trio of linemen Theo Randle and Zion Taylor were joined by linebacker Brian Edmonson in being named to the Blue Bell/Texas Sportswriters Association’s Class 6A All-State Football honorable mention team. The trio helped the Sharks win the District 23-6A crown and advance to the both the area round and compete in the postseason for the fifth straight year.

     

     

     

     

    Iowa Colony Pioneer Report

     

    Both Pioneer squads make hoop playoffs – Both Iowa Colony Varsity Basketball squads are competing in postseason play in just their first year on the varsity circuit. The Iowa Colony girls finished fourth in 26-4A and went to bi-district play, where they dropped a 67-47 decision to Royal, Feb. 14 at George Ranch High School. The IC Boys finished second in 26-4A and with an impressive 27-4 mark, the 11th state ranked Pioneers will be competing in bi-district play early next week.

     

     

    Miles earns all-state gridiron honors – Iowa Colony football standout Jacody Miles earned honorable mention accolades in Class 4A at the utility position for the Blue Bell/Texas Sportswriters Association’s All-State Football team. Miles, who also earned first team all-district and all-county honors, played on both sides of the ball for the Pioneers at running back and safety, while also returning kicks on special teams.

    Lady Mavericks clinch district crown – The Manvel Lady Mavericks rolled to a 57-18 home victory over La Porte, Tuesday night. The win clinched the 18-5A District Championship for the Lady Mavs, who improved to 25-7 overall and 10-0 in district and next play at Galveston Ball, Friday at 7 p.m. The Manvel boys also moved into sole possession of first place in the 18-5A standings with a 67-39 victory at La Porte, Tuesday night. Jamari McDowell pumped in a game-high 19 points, while R.J. Hurd added 17 points and Reuben Doria added 11 points. The Mavs next host Galveston Ball, Friday at 7 p.m.

    Lady Jackets win Santa Fe lift meet – The Alvin High School powerlifting girls emerged as the team champions at the Santa Fe Meet on Jan. 19 for their second meet title this season in as many attempts. First places in the individual classes went to Kaylyn Tucker in the 97-pound class, Estefanny Lino in the 105 class, Lexi Rodriguez in the 114 class, Hannah Casas in the 132 class, Isabella Recendez with a first place in the 148 class, Eliana Hernandez in the 259 class and Maya Ruiz in the 259+ class. Valeria Rangel also picked up a second place in the 148 class and Nathaly Ramirez did likewise in the 165 class.

     

    Garza named to GHVCA list – The postseason honors continue to come in for Lady Yellowjacket volleyball standout Ana Garza with the senior outside hitter being named to the Greater Houston Volleyball Coaches Association’s Class 6A list. Garza, who’s signed a collegiate letter of intent with Houston Christian University, helped Alvin advance to the Class 6A playoffs as the third seed from 23-6A and then pick up their first postseason win in seven years with Garza’s 26-kill performance in the bi-district round against Clear Creek.

    Maverick Basketball moves into first place tie – The Manvel Mavericks’ Varsity Boys’ Basketball team edged Texas City by a 45-41 count at home, Tuesday night to move into a first place tie in the 18-5A with both teams holding 5-2 league marks. The 14-8 Mavs were led by MacDonald All-American Nominee Jamari McDowell’s 14 points and 13 points by R.J. Hurd. The Mavs next play at La Porte, Jan. 31. The Lady Mavericks maintained their two-game lead in the 18-5A girls’ standings with a 56-18 victory at Texas City on Tuesday. The Manvel girls, who  improved to 24-7 overall and 9-0 in district, next host La Porte, Jan. 31.

     

     

    Charles and O’Neal named to Padilla Poll All-State Team – Mavericks’ defensive lineman Jalen Charles and defensive back Jalen O’Neal were both named to the Padilla Poll’s Class 5A All-State Second Defensive team unit.  The duo helped the Mavs advance to the playoffs for the 13th straight season with Manvel competing in the area round this season with an 8-4 overall record.

     

     

     

    Four Lady Mavericks named to GHVCA list – A total of four Manvel Lady Maverick standouts were named to the Greater Houston Volleyball Coaches Association’s Class 5A/4A Private school list.     Third quarter surge helps Sharks top Pearland – The Shadow Creek Sharks erupted for a 14-0 late in the third quarter to pull away for a 49-39 triumph over Pearland in 23-6A boys’ hoop action, Tuesday at the “Shark Tank.” Michael Collins led the way with 11 points and Julian Cullier added nine points. The victory helped the Sharks improve to 18-9 overall and stay in a three-way tie with Strake Jesuit and Alief Taylor for second place in the district standings at 6-2. The Sharks next play at Alief Hastings, Friday at 7 p.m.

     

     

    Gilbert and Randle receive all-state honors, football program also receives award – A pair of Shark football players received all-state honors this week, while the SC football program was also recognized locally. Linebacker Sean Gilbert was named to the Padilla Poll’s Class 6A First Team Defensive unit, while defensive lineman Theo Randle gained second team honors. Shadow Creek’s Football program was also awarded with the Sportsmanship Award by the Houston Touchdown Club. The Sharks won the 23-6A Championship with a perfect 10-0 mark and advanced to the area round of the Class 6A playoffs.

    Lady Pioneers win league swim crown, IC boys place second – Competing in their inaugural season, the Iowa Colony Girls captured the 11-4A Swim title last weekend at Lamar High School in Houston, while the IC boys claimed runner-up honors in their division. The Lady Pioneers compiled a meet best 129 points, while the Pioneers had 99 points on the boys’ side. Diver Lorelei Marquez delivered a 293.05-point performance to also set a new facility mark, while individual gold medals for the Pioneers went to Naima Benitez, Liana Duran, Kamryn Cantu, Johnny Trevino and Dyson Nevels.

    Peterson named to All-Greater Houston Football team – Alvin Yellowjackets’ senior fullback Dayshawn Peterson was named to the All-Greater Houston Football First team offense this week. The accolade adds to the list of season accomplishments for Peterson, who became the fourth Alvin running back to rush for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. This season, Peterson rambled for 1,469 yards on 185 carries (7.9 yard average) and 17 touchdowns. Peterson was also selected to the All-District 23-6A First team recently as well.

     

    Five Lady Yellowjackets named to TSWA All-State Volleyball team – A total of five Alvin Lady Yellowjackets were named to the Blue Bell/Texas Sportswriters Association’s Class 6A Volleyball team. Senior outside hitter Ana Garza and junior middle blocker Wylie Singleton were both selected to the third team, while senior outside hitter Mackenzie Strban joined junior setter Korrigan Wright and senior libero Coryn Breaux each made the honorable mention list.     Maverick Basketball sweeps Friendswood – The Manvel Mavericks’ Varsity Basketball teams both captured their 18-5A contests with Friendswood on Tuesday. The league leading Lady Mavericks continued on a roll with their 11th consecutive win, beating the Lady Mustangs, 60-31 at home. Payton Cooks pumped in a game-high 14 points and Akyla Fields added 10 points. The Lady Mavs (22-7, 7-0 in district) next play at Santa Fe, Friday at 7 p.m. The Manvel also won on Tuesday, posting a 71-49 triumph at Friendswood behind R.J. Hurd’s 23 points, 16 points by Fourest Mills and 13 points by Jamari McDowell. The Mavs (13-8 overall, 3-2 in district) next host Santa Fe, Friday at 7 p.m.

    Sharks and Lady Sharks pick up key district hoop wins   – The Shadow Creek Sharks rolled to 23-6A victories in both boys' and girls’ basketball action on Wednesday. The Sharks rebounded from their first district loss the previous weekend, edging Alief Taylor, 34-32 on the road to improve to 17-8 overall and 4-1 in district. The Sharks next host Strake Jesuit, Friday at 7 p.m. The Lady Sharks rallied from a three-point halftime deficit to top Taylor, 54-46 at home on Wednesday. Shadow Creek went on a 19-6 third quarter run and never looked back to move their record to 18-11 overall and 5-2 in district. Ranked 12th the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, the Pioneers next play at Sweeny, Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Pioneers traveled to West Columbia, Tuesday and came away with a 60-48 victory over the Lady Roughnecks to move into a four-way tie at 4-3 for second place in the league standings. Payton Watson pumped in a game-high 22 points, followed by Janyha Johnson with 15 points and Aaliyah Rogers delivered a double double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.     Maverick Basketball splits district contests with Ball High – The Manvel Mavericks’ Varsity Basketball teams split their 18-5A contest with Galveston Ball on Tuesday. The Lady Mavs rolled to a 52-29 home victory over Ball High to improve a league leading 5-0 in the district standings and 20-7 overall. The Manvel girls next play at Angleton, Friday at 7 p.m. The Mavericks traveled to the Island and came up on the short end of a 63-49 decision to the Tors to drop to 1-2 in district play and 11-8 overall. The Mavs next host Angleton, Friday at 7 p.m.

    Sharks roll to district wins in 23-6A  – The Shadow Creek Sharks rolled to 23-6A in both boys and girls’ basketball action on Tuesday. The Sharks captured a 72-37 decision in Alvin to improve to 16-7 overall and 4-0 in district play. The SC boys next host Dawson, Saturday in Pearland at 1 p.m. Both teams entered the contest tied for first place in the league standings. The Lady Sharks also emerged victorious, claiming a 58-14 home triumph to improve to 16-11 and 3-2 in district. Kameryn Phillips pumped in 12 points to lead the Lady Sharks, who next play  Dawson, Saturday in Pearland at 1 p.m.

    Pioneers drop district games to Stafford – Both Iowa Colony varsity basketball teams came up on the short end of 26-4A hoop contests with Stafford. The 9th ranked IC Boys suffered only their third defeat of the season by a 47-39 count to Spartans in a meeting of state ranked teams, Tuesday in Iowa Colony. Despite the defeat, the Pioneers still hold an impressive 20-3 overall record and 3-1 in district play and next host Columbia High School on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. Leon Gravesande led the Pioneers with 10 points. The Lady Pioneers dropped a 63-48 affair at Stafford despite Aaliyah Rogers’ double double performance of 21 points and 16 rebounds and 12 points by Payton Watson. The IC girls (3-3 in 26-4A) next play at Columbia on Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m.

    Eovaldi signs with Rangers – Alvin High School product Nathan Eovaldi signed a two-year, 34-million dollar contract with the Texas Rangers last month. The former Yellowjackets’ all-state hurler has played with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox. Eovaldi pitched in the 2018 World Series for the Red Sox, who went on the win the World Championship. Eovaldi also helped Alvin advance to the regional semifinals in 2008.

    Maverick Basketball tops Clear Creek on road – The Manvel Mavericks rolled to a 55-48 victory over Clear Creek in non-district boys’ basketball action on Dec. 28 in League City. The Mavs improved to 10-7 overall with the victory. Jamari McDowell pumped in 21 points to lead the way, while RJ Hurd added 11 points.     Pioneers roll to district hoop wins – Both Iowa Colony varsity basketball teams came up with big wins in 26-4A action on Tuesday. Coming off a second place showing at the Lee College Classic, the 10th state ranked IC boys topped La Marque, 56-28, Tuesday night at home to improve to 19-2 overall and 2-0 in district play. The Pioneers put the game away with a 36-10 run between the third and fourth periods. Robert Greene pumped in a game-high 16 points to lead the way and Kamal Henry added 10 points. The Pioneers next play at Brazosport, Friday at 7 p.m. The Iowa Colony girls traveled to La Marque on Tuesday and captured a 63-29 triumph to improve to 2-2 in district play. Leading the way for the Lady Pioneers was Aaliyah Rogers with 23 points and 14 rebounds for double double performance and Zia Willett added 12 points.     Lady Yellowjackets top Brazoswood – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets came away with a 47-19 victory over Brazoswood in non-district girls’ basketball action, Tuesday night at the AHS Competition Gym. Trinity Stevens led the way with a game-high 12 points, while Kendall Jackson added 11 points and Miranda Vogel chipped in 10 points. Improving their record to 7-10, the Lady Jackets put the game away with an 18-1 run in the second quarter.     Maverick Basketball teams roll to wins – Both the Manvel Maverick Basketball teams rolled to victories in non-district action, Tuesday night. The Mavericks edged Clear Brook by a 53-48 at home to improve to 7-4 for the season. Jamari McDowell pumped in 16 points, followed by RJ Hurd with 14 points and Reuben Doria with 13 points. Trailing 23-22 at intermission, the Mavs outscored the Wolverines by a 13-10 count in the third period to take a 35-33 lead into the final period. The Mavs next host Clear Falls, Friday at 7 p.m. The Manvel Girls also emerged victorious on Tuesday, topping Alief Taylor, 47-40 on the road to improve to 14-7 for the season. Leading scorers for the Lady Mavs included Jackie Oba with 11 points and 14 rebounds for a double double, Allyson Ferguson with 12 points, Akyla Fields with nine points and four assists and Peyton Cooks with eight points and four assists.     Sharks split non-district hoop affairs  – The Shadow Creek Sharks split their two non-district varsity basketball contests on Tuesday night. The Lady Sharks topped Beaumont United by a 51-38 count on the road behind Gianna Gentry’s 18 points and 14 points by Kameryn Phillips. The Lady Sharks (10-7) erased a 11-6 United first quarter lead with an 18-2 run in the second period. Phillips also pulled down 12 rebounds to record a double double performance. Shadow Creek next opens 23-6A play on Dec. 13 at Alief Taylor. The Shadow Creek Boys came up on the short end of a 67-53 decision at Houston Christian.     Pioneers enter state rankings for first time ever – Fresh off an impressive 3-1 performance at the Barbers Hill Gulf Coast Hoop Classic last weekend, the Iowa Colony Pioneers start this week state ranked for the first ever with a No. 13 ranking by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 4A Boys’ Poll. The Pioneers collected wins over a non varsity opponent (76-30), North Shore (74-69) and Deer Park (48-47) with Robert Greene hitting the game-winning bucket in the latter contest in the closing seconds. The Pioneers currently hold an 8-1 record for the season. The Iowa Colony girls’ squad also came up victorious earlier this week with a 44-37 triumph against Goose Creek Memorial in Baytown, Tuesday night. Jamyha Johnson pumped in a game-high 22 points and Aaliyah Rogers pulled down eight rebounds.

    13 Yellowjackets named to All-District 23-6A Football team – A total of 13 Alvin Yellowjackets were named to the All-District 23-6A Football team. Running back Dayshawn Peterson was an unanimous first team offensive selection, while tackle Mark Lowe was also an unanimous first team selection on the defensive side of the ball. Peterson and Lowe were joined on the first team by center Finn Madding, offensive guard Yahir Meza and punter Ray Razo. Honorable mention status went to receiver Joseph Palermo, offensive linemen Juan Juarez and Bradley Eernisse, running back Cole Erdnt, linebacker Darius Wilson, defensive lineman Liam Binger and defensive backs Hunter Kneifel and Sesar Lomeli.     Mavericks’ Football receives 23 all-district selections – The Area Finalist Manvel Mavericks received a total of 23 all-district football selections for 10-5A Division I. Inside linebackers Kaleb Blanton and Tyler Cooks was both named to the first team along with linebacker Avery Demery, safety Jalen O’Neal (unanimous), defensive tackle Mason Fleming, defensive ends Kenyon Armstrong and Jalen Charles, punter Darius Green and offensive lineman Micah Williams. Second team nods went to linebackers Zion Holmes and Quincy Nevins, safety Ja`mori Williams, defensive end Quentin Lucas, receiver Joseph Paddio, offensive lineman Allan McCarter and Devin Davis and quarterback Kaeden Smith. Honorable mention status included kicker Chase Cross, offensive linemen Elijah Cantu and Malcom Fields, receivers Derius Clerkley and Ja`Vhari Taylor and running back Steve Polk. The Mavs went 8-4 overall and 6-2 in district play, posting a bi-district playoff victory over Houston Waltrip.

     

     

    Lady Mavericks’ hoops edge Dickinson – The Manvel Lady Mavericks moved their record to 11-5 for the season with a narrow 63-58 home victory over Dickinson in non-district girls’ basketball action, Tuesday night. Freshman guard Peyton Cooks had 17 points and seven assists, while sophomore guard Akyla Fields poured in 16 points and four assists and Jackie Oba and Ja`Naya Scott both contributed nine points and seven rebounds. The Lady Mavs next compete at the Nancy Wailing Classic in Pflugerville this weekend.

    Randle named Football MVP in 23-6A  – Defensive end Theo Randle was named the most valuable player to highlight the area finalist Shadow Creek Sharks’ player selections to the All-District 23-6A Football team. Shadow Creek also received the coaching staff of the year award and outside linebacker Anthony Williams Jr. was tabbed as the district’s newcomer of the year. Other first team picks for the Sharks included offensive tackle Tyson Kestner, offensive guard Marquis Yancy (unanimous), center Marcus Kemp, tailback Tylik Burton, receiver Josh Best, defensive end Zion Taylor, defensive tackle Mitchel Craney (unanimous), outside linebacker Shaun Gilbert (unanimous), inside linebacker Robert Edmondson (unanimous), cornerback Brian Nelson, safety Maurice Williams (unanimous) and kicker Aiden Bui (unanimous).     Pioneers pick up 13 all-district football honors – The Iowa Colony Pioneers picked up 13 all-district nods for 12-4A Division I in their inaugural year on the gridiron. Running back Jacody Miles was named the district’s newcomer of the year and was joined on the first team by receiver Landrew Ward and defensive lineman Chris Johnson. Second team selections went to offensive lineman Jayden Simmons, receiver Antoine Martin, running back Eric Mosley and linebacker Treshaun O’Neal. Honorable mention status included linebackers Haydon Caston and Henry Kalu, offensive linemen Aeden Elizondo and Tyson Windham, receiver/defensive back Jarvis Solomon and defensive back Mason Brown. The Pioneers went 2-8 for the season with their district overtime victory over Navasota tabbed as the biggest 4A victory in the state that week.

    Garza named offensive player of the year in 23-6A – Ana Garza was named the offensive player of the year to highlight the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets’ eight selections to the All-District 23-6A Volleyball team. Garza was joined on the first team by Mackenzie Strban, Wylie Singleton and Korrigan Wright, while Coryn Breaux and Cara Saenz earned second team nods and Aubry Anderson and Corynn Williams both gained honorable mention status. All-district academic honors also went to Anderson, Breaux, Garza, Emily Kastner, Saenz, Strban, Emma Garcia, Ryli Ouellette, Singleton, Wright and Williams.     Mavericks’ Football defeats Waltrip in bi-district – The Manvel Mavericks captured a 42-3 victory over the Waltrip Rams in the Class 5A Division I Bi-District Football Playoffs, Nov. 11 at Delmar Stadium in Houston. The victory advances the 8-3 Mavericks into the area round, where they will next play Smithson Valley at Memorial Stadium in Bastrop, Friday at 7:30 p.m. Senior signal caller Kaeden Smith completed 6 of 8 passes for 140 yards and threw scoring passes of 41, 54 and 17 yards to Derius Clerkley, while Smith added an eight-yard TD run on a keeper and Steve Polk chipped in a pair of four-yard scoring runs as well.

     

     

    Lady Mavericks’ Volleyball dominate 18-5A awards – The Regional Semifinalist Manvel Lady Mavericks dominated the player awards in the All-District 18-5A All-District Volleyball Selections. Devyn Lewis was named the district’s most valuable player, while Lyric Jordan earned offensive player of the year honors and Kenedy Massie received the setter of the year award. Susan Kennedy was tabbed as the coach of the year as well for the Lady Mavs, who went 33-11 overall and posted playoff victories over Crosby, Lamar Consolidated and Barbers Hill. Joining Lewis, Jordan and Massie on the first team were Bea Angeles, Christian Fairbanks, Emily Altamirano and Jasmyn Walker. Cassidy Browning and Tylisee Brinkley were both named to the second team and honorable mention nods went to London King, Kamilee Charland and Nevaeh English. All Academic honors also went to Walker, Altamirano, Browning, Kadia Jackson, Angeles, Charland, Keagan St. Junious, Niara Williams, Jordan, Brinkley, Massie, Lewis and Fairbanks.

    Sharks rolls to bi-district football triumph  – The 23-6A Champion Shadow Creek Sharks rolled to a 77-7 triumph over Brazoswood in the Class 6A Division 2 Bi-District Football Playoffs, Nov. 11 at AISD Freedom Field. The victory advances the 11-0 Sharks into the area round, where they will meet Summer Creek, Friday night at the University of Houston’s TDECU Stadium at 7 p.m. Shadow Creek quarterback Duke Butler completed 11 of 17 passes for 205 yards and five touchdowns in the win over Brazoswood. The Sharks’ defense also collected five sacks and intercepted a pair of Bucs’ passes. Jacob Washington scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground, while Butler fired a 97-yard TD pass to Caleb Washington and Jacorey Watson grabbed a pair of scoring receptions as well.

    Lady Pioneers shine in inaugural all-district volleyball picks – Competing in their first season on the court, the Iowa Colony Lady Pioneers received five selections to the All-District 26-4A Volleyball team. Kaylee Preston was named the newcomer of the year and joined Taylor Bonner-Williams and Aaliyah Rogers on the first team, while second team nods went to Kaydee Howard and Riley Vincent. All academic honors also went to Regan Carr, Morgan Frantzen, Adriana Murry, Rogers, Vincent, Howard and Je`Dyn Parker. The Lady Pioneers went 6-6 in district play and competed in a mini tournament for the third and fourth playoff seeds in 26-4A.

    Lady Yellowjackets advance to 6A Area Volleyball Playoffs - The Alvin High School Varsity Volleyball girls closed their 2022 season by advancing to the Class 6A Area Playoffs for the first time in seven years. Alvin opened the postseason with a 25-23, 27-29, 28-26 and 25-23 four set bi-district triumph over Clear Creek, Nov. 1 in Dickinson. Match totals included Ana Garza with 26 kills and 29 digs, Korrigan Wright with 34 assists and 10 digs and Mackenzie Strban with 10 kills and 14 digs. Coryn Breaux also provided 27 digs and Aubry Anderson chipped in 12 digs and Wylie Singleton had nine kills. The Lady Jackets then faced Summer Creek in the area round on Nov. 3 in Baytown, where they fell short by a 25-20, 21-25, 16-25 and 23-25 count. Match totals included Garza with 20 kills and 25 digs, Strban with nine kills and nine digs, Wright with 35 assists, Breaux with 18 digs, Anderson with 12 digs and Singleton with six blocks. Alvin closes its season with a solid 26-14 mark.

     

    Yellowjackets’ Football closes its season with Dawson – The Alvin Yellowjackets closed their 2022 Football season by falling to Dawson 42-20, Nov. 4 at AISD Memorial Stadium. Alvin finishes its season at 4-6 overall. Dayshawn Peterson scored all three Yellowjacket touchdowns and rushed for 209 yards on 33 carries. Peterson finished with 1,469 yards overall, making the senior fullback the fourth Alvin running back ever to rush for consecutive 1,000 yard seasons. Peterson also delivered 17 touchdown runs for the season. Cole Erndt added 61 rushing yards in the contest

    Mavericks’ Football to meet Waltrip in bi-district – The Manvel Mavericks will compete in the Class 5A Division I Football Bi-District Playoffs this week with head coach Kevin Hall’s squad meeting Waltrip, Thursday at Delmar Stadium in Houston at 7 p.m. The Mavs finished the regular season at 7-3 overall and 6-2 in 10-5A D-1 after topping Rosenberg Terry, 28-7 in their regular season finale, Nov. 4 in Rosenberg. Zion Holmes returned an interception 16 yards to get Manvel on the board in the opening period. Quarterback Kaden Smith reached the end zone on keepers of 18 and 9 yards, while tossing a 19-yard scoring reception to Elijah Williams. The Mavs enter the first round of the playoffs Thursday as the third seed from 10-5A, D-1.

     

    Lady Mavericks’ Volleyball rolls into 5A Regional Quarterfinals – The Manvel Lady Mavericks rolled into the Class 5A Regional Volleyball Quarterfinals with a pair of playoff sweeps during the first two rounds. The Lady Mavs moved their record to 32-10 as a result and will meet Barbers Hill, Tuesday in the regional quarters at Dobie High School in Pasadena at 6 p.m. The Lady Mavs opened the postseason with a 25-6, 25-20 and 25-15 sweep of Crosby in the bi-district round, Nov. 1 at Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena. Lyric Jordan paced the Lady Mavs with 18 kills, while Kenedy Massie dished out 30 assists and Bea Angeles and Devyn Lewis added 14 digs apiece. The Lady Mavs then took out the brooms again on Lamar Consolidated in the area round, Nov. 4 at Wheeler Field House in Sugar Land by a 25-10, 25-9 and 25-14 margin.     Sharks hosting Brazoswood in 6A Bi-District FB Playoffs  – The 23-6A Shadow Creek Sharks will host Brazoswood in the Class 6A Division I Football Playoffs, Thursday night at AISD Freedom Field at 7 p.m. The Sharks enter the contest with a perfect 10-0 overall and 7-0 district record after defeating Strake Jesuit 56-21 in their regular season finale, Nov. 4 at Freedom Field. Jacob Washington sprinted for scoring runs of 33 and 7 yards in the first half, while Duke Butler fired scoring passes of 28 yards to Joshua Best and 35 yards to Jacob Washington. Butler completed 15 of 21 passes for 290 yards and five touchdowns. Jacorey Watson also had a pair of TD receptions.

    Lady Pioneers’ Basketball plays in first ever game – The Iowa Colony Lady Pioneers played in their first ever varsity girls’ basketball contest last weekend, being edged by Houston Madison, 45-39 on Nov. 4. Freshman Aaliyah Rogers led the scoring with 12 points and Payton Watson added eight points. The Lady Pioneers next play at Barbers Hill, Tuesday at 6 p.m.

     

     

     

    Pioneers close inaugural football season – The Iowa Colony Pioneers dropped a 56-41 decision at Needville on Nov. 4 to close their inaugural football season. Camren Renfro completed 15 of 32 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 78 yards on 12 carries and two TD’s. Eric Mosley compiled 152 yards on the ground as well on 14 carries and one TD. Zeldyn Golden paced the Pioneers’ defense with 12 tackles. Iowa Colony closes their first ever season at 2-8 overall and 1-5 in 12-4A Division I.

    Yellowjackets’ Football picks up second straight victory – Fresh off their comeback win over Alief Elsik, the Alvin Yellowjackets picked up their second straight victory in 23-6A Football action with a 34-21 triumph over Hastings, Oct. 27 at Crump Stadium in Alief. Alvin moved its record to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in district play with the victory. Dayshawn Peterson led the way with 268 yards on 24 carries and three touchdowns. Peterson also became the fourth Yellowjacket running back ever to cross the 1,000-yard rushing barrier in back-to-back seasons. Quarter Brayden Griffin also scored twice for Alvin on keepers. Liam Binger also came up with a big quarterback sack for the Jackets’ defense to stop a Bears’ drive on downs in the first half, while Gio Gutierrez intercepted a pass.

    Mavericks’ Football edged by Fulshear – The Manvel Mavericks dropped out of a first place tie in the 10-5A Division I Football Standings with a narrow 9-7 defeat to Fulshear, Oct. 28 at AISD Freedom Field in Iowa Colony. Despite falling out of contention for the league crown, the Mavs (6-3 overall, 5-2) still have a chance to clinch a playoff berth with a Friday night win against Rosenberg Terry at Traylor Stadium at 7 p.m. In last week’s contest, quarterback Kaeden Smith scored Manvel’s lone touchdown on a 45-yard dash to the end zone.

     

    Lady Mavericks’ Volleyball face Crosby in 5A Bi-District Playoffs – The Manvel Lady Mavericks open play in the Class 5A Bi-District Volleyball Playoffs by facing Crosby, Tuesday night at Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Mavs hold a 30-10 overall record, sweeping 6A Clear Creek in a warm-up match last weekend in League City by 26-24, 26-24 and 25-18 scores.     Sharks moved closer to clinching the outright crown  – The Shadow Creek Sharks moved a step closer to clinching the outright 23-6A Football Championship with a 45-0 victory over Taylor, Oct. 28 at Crump Stadium in Alief. The Sharks (9-0 overall, 6-0) can secure the district crown outright with a victory at home over Strake Jesuit, Friday night at AISD Freedom Field in Iowa Colony. The Sharks’ defense intercepted five Crusader passes with pick-6 returns by Nick King (30 yards) Aiden Benjamin (20 yards) giving Shadow Creek a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Senior signal caller Duke Butler also returned to action for the first time in two months, throwing scoring passes to Jacorey Watson (6 yards) and Joshua Best (8 yards), while Watson added a 15-yard scoring strike to Christian Seriale and an 8-yard scoring run.

     

     

    Lady Sharks meet Springs in 6A Volleyball Playoffs – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks compete in the Class 6A Volleyball playoffs this week, facing 24-6A Champion Clear Springs in the bi-district round, Tuesday night at Alvin High School at 6 p.m. The Lady Sharks enter the contest with a 21-19 overall record and are the fourth seed out of District 23-6A.

    Pioneers drop 28-27 heartbreaker to Bay City – The Iowa Colony Pioneers dropped a 28-27 heartbreaker to Bay City, Oct. 28 in 12-4A Football action at AISD Freedom Field. The Pioneers (2-7 overall, 1-4) saw their playoff hopes come to an end in their inaugural season, while giving 12-4A foes several down-to-the wires finishes this fall. Jacody Miles rushed for 149 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown, while Camren Renfro added a 21-yard TD pass to Jarvis Solomon along with an 11-yard scoring keeper. Chris Johnson also scooped up a loose Bay City fumble and returned it 6 yards for an IC defensive score. The Pioneers close their season, Friday night at Needville at 7 p.m.

     

     

     

    Sweep over La Marque puts Lady Pioneers in mini-playoff seeding tourney – The Iowa Colony Lady Pioneers came away with a 25-11, 25-19 and 25-8 home sweep over La Marque to force a three-way tie in the 26-4A Volleyball standings and a mini-playoff seeding tournament with Bay City and Sweeny later in the week. Iowa Colony gave the Lady Blackcats all they could handle in the third place contest Thursday in West Columbia, before falling by 15-25, 16-25, 25-18 and 22-25 scores. Iowa Colony also took Sweeny to four sets on Friday at home in the fourth place seeding affair, but dropped a four-set contest to the Lady Bulldogs. Nevertheless, the Lady Pioneers finished their inaugural season on the court with a respectable 6-6 record in district play.

    Mavericks’ Football edges Foster in thriller – The Manvel Mavericks remained tied atop the 10-5A Division I Football standings after edging Foster in a 28-23 thriller, Oct. 15 at AISD Memorial Stadium. Manvel improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in district with the victory. With the Mavs trailing 14-9 entering the second half, Manvel quarterback Kaeden Smith rambled for touchdowns on keepers of 2 and 15 yards out and threw a 28-yard TD pass to Joseph Paddio to pave the way for the comeback. Smith also fired a 29-yard scoring toss to Ja`Vhari Taylor in the first half and Jalen Charles recorded a QB sack in the end zone for a safety. The Mavs next play at Magnolia, Friday night at 7 p.m.

    Pioneers prevail in 35-34 overtime heart stopper – The Iowa Colony Pioneers came up with one of the biggest victories in the state in the Class 4A Football ranks last weekend, edging Navasota in a 35-34 overtime thriller, Oct. 14 at AISD Freedom Field. Iowa Colony improved to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in 12-4A Division I with the victory. Navasota scored first in the extra period to take a 34-27 lead, but IC signal caller Kamal Henry hit Landrew Ward with a 12-yard TD pass to bring the Pioneers within 34-33 and Henry then motored in with the winning two-point conversion run. Henry and Jacody Miles both had short TD runs in the first half to help Iowa Colony take a 14-13 lead into the dressing room, while Henry rambled for TD runs of 60 ad 2 yards in the second half.     Yellowjackets’ Water Polo teams sweep Bellaire in bi-district - The Alvin High School Water Polo teams swept Bellaire in the UIL Region 2 Bi-District playoffs on Monday to pick up their first playoff victories in school history at the Lenny Garcia Natatorium in Alvin. The Lady Yellowjackets dominated the Lady Cardinals, 18-3 behind Jillian Bates’ five goals and Amber Ortiz’s eight saves. Gracey Kettler also collected a hat trick with three goals. The Alvin girls improved to 19-7 overall and will next play Bridgeland in the area playoff round on Saturday. The Alvin Boys also turned in an outstanding performance in their bi-district contest with Bellaire, collecting a 19-6 triumph. Ethan Horswell led the way with six goals and Kylie Myers stopped eight shots at keeper. Dax Taylor also had three goals in the contest for the 19-6 Jackets, who next play Cypress Ranch in the area round on Saturday.

     

     

    Jackets’ Football assistant recognized as Texans’ HS School of the Week – Alvin Yellowjackets’ Assistant Football Coach James Shewmake was recognized as the Houston Texans’ High School Coach of the Week with the presentation being made Oct. 10 at AISD Memorial Stadium by Texans’ linebacker Garret Wallow, the Texans’ cheerleaders and Texans’ youth director Brett Stewart. The Texans and Methodist Hospital also presented a $2,500 check to the Yellowjacket Football program.

Austin Hill followed with field goals of 25 and 35 yards, which helped Alvin maintain a 12-10 advantage at intermission, before Taylor erupted for three straight TD’s in the third quarter. Quarterback Brayden Griffin also scored for Alvin on a two-yard run and added a two-point conversion following the TD.     Mavericks deliver 30-14 victory against Magnolia West – The Manvel Mavericks delivered a dominating 30-14 victory over Magnolia West in 10-5A, Division I Football action, Sept. 23 at AISD Freedom Field. Manvel moved its record to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in district with the victory. Quarterback Kaeden Smith threw scoring passes of 10 yards to Ja`Vhari Taylor and 20 yards to Elijah Williams, while Smith went in from a yards out on a keeper. Zion Holmes also returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown. The Mavs, who also blanked Kempner 42-0 on the road, Thursday to improve 3-1 in district and 4-2 overall, have an open date next weekend and return to action on Oct. 13 at home against Foster.     Lady Mavericks’ Volleyball rallies to take over first place in 18-5A – The Manvel Lady Mavericks staged a dramatic rally to pull off a 25-21, 22-25, 20-25, 25-19 and 15-10 come-from-behind five set triumph over Friendswood in 18-5A Volleyball action, Tuesday night in Friendswood. The victory helped the Lady Mavs (23-10 overall) take over sole possession of first place in the district with both teams having entered the contest with identical 4-0 league marks. Leading the way for Manvel was Lyric Jordan with 23 kills, Devyn Lewis with 17 kills and 14 digs, Kenedy Massie with 43 assists and 11 digs and Bea Angeles with 20 digs.     Sharks rally past Pearland at “The Rig”  – The Shadow Creek Sharks rallied with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to top Pearland, 24-20 in the 23-6A Football opener for both teams, Sept. 23 at “The Rig” in Pearland. Shadow Creek trailed 20-10 early in the final period, before quarterback Jacorey Watson found Joshua Best with an 84-yard scoring strike and then motored 59 yards on a keeper to give the Sharks (4- 0 overall) their first lead of the contest, which they would hold the rest of the way. Jacob Washington, who rushed for 141 yards, also exploded for a 78-yard scoring run and Aiden Bui booted a 25-yard goal for Shadow Creek’s other tallies.     Lady Pioneers’ Volleyball picks up third straight win – The Iowa Colony Lady Pioneers improved to 3-2 in the 26-4A Volleyball standings with an 11-25, 25-17, 25-17 and 25-23 four-set victory at Bay City, Tuesday night. The victory was also the third straight for the Lady Pioneers. Match totals for the Lady Pioneers included Kaylee Preston with 19 kills and nine digs, Riley Vincent with four aces and 20 digs, Aaliyah Rogers with six blocks, T. Bonner Williams with 12 digs and Kaydee Howard with 28 assists. The Lady Pioneers next play at La Marque, Friday night at 4:30 p.m.

    Lady Yellowjackets’ Volleyball wins five set thriller – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets improved to 2-1 in 23-6A and 19-11 overall with a narrow 25-8, 25-21, 23-25, 21-25 and 15-11 five set triumph over Shadow Creek, Tuesday night at the AHS Competition Gym. Leading the way for the Lady Jackets was Ana Garza with 26 kills and 21 digs, Mackenzie Strban with 20 kills and 24 digs, Korrigan Wright with 47 assists and 13 digs, Coryn Breaux with 22 digs and Wylie Singleton and Corynn Williams with three blocks apiece.     Mavericks even district football record with win at Friendswood – The Manvel Mavericks came away with a 24-14 road victory at Friendswood on Sept. 16 to even their 10-5A Division I record at 1-1 and their overall mark at 2-2 as well. Chase Cross booted a 25-yard field for the Mavs in the opening period, while interceptions by Quincy Nevins and Avery Demery paved the way for a pair of scoring runs by Andrew Riley (6 and 1 yards) in the second quarter. Quarterback Kaeden Smith hooked up with Kyler Flint for an 88-yard TD pass in the second half. Smith completed 15 of 21 passes for 203 yards and the one TD. The Mavs next host Magnolia West, Friday at AISD Freedom Field at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Mavericks’ Volleyball stays on roll with win over Ball – The Manvel Lady Mavericks stay on a roll in 18-5A Volleyball play with a 25-12, 25-10 and 25-13 straight set sweep over Galveston Ball, Tuesday in Manvel. Manvel moved its record to 21-10 overall and 3-0 in district with the victory. Leading the way for the Lady Mavs was Devyn Lewis and Lyric Jordan with 14 kills apiece, Kenedy Massie with 31 assists and 13 digs, Bea Angeles with 15 digs and Christian Fairbanks with seven kills and four blocks.     Lady Sharks drop five set squeaker in district  – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks dropped a heartbreaker five set squeaker at Alvin, Tuesday in 23-6A volleyball play by 8-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 11-15 scores. The Lady Sharks currently carry a 2-2 district record and a 17-15 overall mark. Mackenzie Collins’ 14 kills paced Shadow Creek, while Breana Clark chipped in 12 kills. Simone Robinson added 21 assists and 12 digs and Haley Smith had 29 assists. The Lady Sharks next host Dawson, Friday at 6:30 p.m.

    Lady Pioneers’ Volleyball sweeps Stafford – The Iowa Colony Lady Pioneers delivered a 25-13, 25-21 and 28-26 straight set sweep over Stafford in 26-4A Volleyball play, Tuesday in Iowa Colony. The victory was the second this season for the IC Volleyball program and first ever win in straight sets. Leading the way for the Lady Pioneers was Kaylee Preston with 16 kills and 15 digs, Kaydee Howard with 29 assists, Riley Vincent with five aces and 10 digs and Aaliyah Rogers with eight blocks. Iowa Colony next plays at Sweeny, Friday at 4:30 p.m.

     

    Pioneers fall to Columbia in non-district FB action – The Iowa Colony Pioneers fell to Columbia in non-district football action, Sept. 16 at AISD Freedom Field in Iowa Colony. Kamal Henry found Jacody Miles with a 26-yard touchdown pass, while Henry exploded 60 yards for a rushing touchdown on a keeper. Henry rushed for 164 yards on eight carries. Miles also accounted for 108 all-purpose yards in the contest. The Pioneers have an open date in their schedule this weekend and will make their District 12-4A D-1 debut at home against Stafford, Sept. 29.

    Yellowjackets’ Football drops contest to United – The Alvin Yellowjackets suffered a 48-27 defeat to Beaumont United on Sept. 9 in non-district football action at Beaumont ISD Stadium. Alvin drops to 2-1 for the season with the loss. Riley Pavlas scored on a 65-yard run, while Dayshawn Peterson rushed for 108 yards and two TD’s and quarterback Brayden Griffin also scored on the ground for the Jackets. Ezyaih Vaughns rushed for 133 yards to lead the Jackets’ offense. Alvin has an open date this weekend and then opens 23-6A play at Alief Taylor, Sept. 22.

Match totals included Ana Garza with 19 kills and 17 digs for a double double, Mackenzie Strban with 11 kills and 15 digs for a double double and Korrigan Wright with 32 assists.     Mavericks edged on last second field goal at homecoming – The Manvel Mavericks were edged by a 24-21 count by Angleton in their 10-5A Division I football opener, Sept. 9 at AISD Freedom Field with the Wildcats booting a last second go-ahead field goal. Kiram Dallas scored the Mavs’ first touchdown on a 20-yard run, while Ja`mori Williams recovered a fumble in the end zone for the second score. Andrew Riley rambled 25 yards for the third Manvel score and QB Kaeden Smith hit Steve Polk with a two-point conversion pass. The Mavs (1-2) next play at Friendswood, Friday at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Mavericks open district by sweeping Texas City – The Manvel Lady Mavericks opened 18-5A volleyball play at home on a sweeping note, defeating Texas City by 25-8, 25-2 and 25-10 scores on Sept. 9. Devyn Lewis provided a double double with 13 kills and 10 aces, while Kenedy Massie dished out 23 assists and Bea Angeles added 14 digs.     Shadow Creek cruise to 38-6 triumph at Bridgeland  – The Shadow Creek Sharks improved to 3-0 for the season with a convincing 38-6 non-district football triumph over Bridgeland, Sept. 10 at FCU Stadium in Cypress. The Sharks held a 7-6 lead after one period thanks to Jacob Washington’s 31-yard run and then put the game away with 31 unanswered points in the second quarter. QB Jacorey Watson passed two yards to Caleb Washington and Brian Nelson returned an interception 28 yards to make it 21-6. Watson then hit Christian Seriale (20 yards) and Caleb Washington (17 yards) with scoring passes and Aiden Bui booted a 24-yard field goal. The Sharks have an open date this weekend and open 23-6A play at Pearland, Sept. 23.

    Pioneers drop 35-28 squeaker to Brookshire Royal – The Iowa Colony Pioneers dropped a 35-28 squeaker to Brookshire Royal in non-district football action on Sept. 9 at AISD Memorial Stadium. The Pioneers (1-2) led 28-17 early in the fourth quarter, before Royal rallied for 18 unanswered points. Jacody Miles rushed for 113 yards on 12 carries with scoring runs of 60, 44 and 1 yard and Antoine Martin exploded 87 yards with a kickoff return.     Yellowjackets’ Football defeats Cleveland at homecoming – The Alvin Yellowjackets jumped to a quick 21-0 lead in the first half and never looked back in delivering a 41-20 homecoming victory over Cleveland, Sept. 2 at AISD Memorial Stadium. The Yellowjackets are off to their first 2-0 start to a season since 2015. Dayshawn Peterson rushed for 209 yards on 16 carries and joined Cole Erndt and Brayden Griffin with two touchdowns apiece on the ground. Peterson’s 96-yard scoring run in the opening period was also the second longest in school history. The Jackets’ defense also created five turnovers to keep the Indians from attempting a comeback. Alvin next plays Beaumont United, Friday at Beaumont ISD Stadium at 7 p.m.

     

     

    Lady Jackets’ Volleyball capture four set victory at Clear Brook – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets captured a 25-18, 25-23, 19-25 and 27-25 four set triumph at Clear Brook in non-district volleyball action on Sept. 6. Ana Garza delivered a double double with 18 kills and 16 digs, as did Korrigan Wright with 40 assists and 22 digs. Wylie Singleton also had 18 kills and Coryn Breaux added 18 digs, while Mackenzie Strban chipped in 15 digs and Aubry Anderson provided 12 digs. Improving to 17-10 for the season, the Lady Jackets next open 23-6A play, Friday at Alief Taylor at 6:30 p.m.

    Mavericks hold off Westbrook rally in 41-27 win– The Manvel Mavericks evened their record to 1-1 for the season with a 41-27 win over Beaumont Westbrook, Sept. 2 in non-district football action at Beaumont ISD Stadium. Elijah Williams turned in a big evening for Manvel scoring on both a 75-yard punt return and a 41-yard pass reception from quarterback Kaeden Smith. Smith (17 yards) joined Steve Polk (6 yards) and Andrew Riley (5 yards) with rushing TD’s as well and Ja`Vhari Taylor hauled in a 27-yard scoring reception from Smith. The Mavs next host Angleton in their 10-5A D-1 opener, Friday at AISD Freedom Field at 7 p.m. with Manvel also celebrating homecoming.

     

    Lady Mavericks hold off Dickinson in four sets – The Manvel Lady Mavericks rallied from a slow start to defeat Dickinson by 17-25, 25-14, 25-9 and 26-24 scores in non-district volleyball action, Sept. 6 in Manvel. Manvel improved to 17-10 for the season and next open 18-5A play by hosting Texas City, Friday at 6:30 p.m. Devyn Lewis drilled 16 kills to lead the way for Manvel in their win over Dickinson, while Lyric Jordan added 15 kills and Christian Fairbanks chipped in seven kills and six blocks. Kenedy Massie and London King also dished out double figure assist numbers with 23 and 12, respectively, and Bea Angeles provided 32 digs.

    Shadow Creek rolls to 38-27 victory over Springs  – The Shadow Creek Sharks moved their record to 2-0 for the season with a 38-27 non-district football victory over Clear Springs, Sept. 2 at AISD Freedom Field. Quarterback Duke Butler hit Joshua Best and Caleb Washington with touchdown passes, while Tylik Burton exploded 92 yards with a kickoff to open the second half and Corey Swiney rambled 49 yards with a fumble return. Justin Quall also had a rushing TD for the Sharks. Shadow Creek next plays Bridgeland, Saturday at FCU Stadium in Cypress at 6 p.m.

    Pioneers capture first football win in school history – The Iowa Colony Pioneers picked up their first varsity football win in school history last week with a 26-7 triumph over Kipp Sunnyside in non-district action, Sept. 1 at AISD Freedom Field. Playing with only freshmen and sophomores in their first year on the gridiron, head coach Ray Garza’s squad also became the youngest AISD football team ever to win a varsity game. Pioneers’ quarterback Kamal Henry accounted for 118 yards of total offense and three TD’s. Jacody Miles rushed for 76 yards on 15 carries and one TD. Iowa Colony next hosts Brookshire Royal, Friday at AISD Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m.

    Lady Jackets’ Volleyball captures consolation gold at Bastrop – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets won six of their nine matches last weekend at the Bastrop ISD Volleyball Tournament to capture the consolation gold title and Ana Garza and Mackenzie Strban were both named to the all-tournament team. This marks the second straight week the Lady Jackets have came up on the winning end in tournament play, winning the Pasadena ISD Tournament the previous weekend. At Bastrop, Alvin posted wins over Del Valle, Lockhart, Thrall, Johnson City, Aubrey and Bellville (25-22, 16-25, 15-23 in the title match) to improve to 12-5 for the season. The Lady Jackets next host Dickinson, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and then play at Clear Lake, Friday at 6:30 p.m.

    Lady Mavericks shine at Dickinson Tournament – The Manvel Lady Mavericks won five of their six matches at the Dickinson Lady Gator Classic last weekend in Webster with both Devyn Lewis and Lyric Jordan making the all-tournament team. Manvel (11-5) posted wins over Houston Lamar, Sam Rayburn, Katy Paetow, Episcopal and Friendswood, while being edged by Barbers Hill for the tourney title in the gold bracket. Lewis also came up with a big 24-kill performance in the Lady Mavs’ four set win at Alvin on Aug. 16. The Lady Mavs next host Fort Bend Travis, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
