    Lady Jackets’ season ends in region semis – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets saw their season come to an end with 4-1 and 7-4 defeats to Katy in the-best-of-three Class 6A Region Semifinal Softball Series last weekend. Alvin closes at 33-7 with their deepest playoff run since 2016. The Lady Jackets captured the 24-6A Championship with a perfect 12-0 mark and went on post playoff series wins over Brazoswood, Pasadena Memorial and Dobie.

     

    Jackets land six selections on 24-6A Baseball team – The Alvin Yellowjackets received a total of six player selections to the All-District 24-6A Baseball team. Junior pitcher Carson Keithley was a unanimous first team pick on the mound and junior Levi Whitlock was also an unanimous first team pick in the outfield. Sophomore shortstop Eric Vasquez was also named the newcomer of the year for the district. Second team nods went to second baseman Austin Hinson, third baseman Colin Jeter and pitcher Wyatt Fields.

    Benitez named co-pitcher of the year – Senior Eric Benitez was named to the co-pitcher of the year in 24-5A to head the seven all-district baseball selections for the area playoff finalist Manvel Mavericks. Benitez was joined on the first team by senior outfielders Parker Carruth and Jackson Sweeney, senior third baseman Myles Simmons and junior second baseman Dillon Novak. Isaiah Walker earned a second team nod at shortstop and Vincente Robledo gained honorable mention status. The Mavs went 15-15 overall and as the district’s third seed, edged Houston Waltrip in a one-game bi-district playoff.

    Greer tabbed as top hitter in 24-5A – Sharks’ senior shortstop Ben Greer was tabbed as the offensive MVP in 24-5A to head the seven all-district picks for the area baseball finalist Shadow Creek Sharks, who made the playoffs for the first time in their school history. Greer was also named the district’s offensive MVP last season when the Sharks were part of 23-5A. Joining Greer on the first team was junior pitcher Lloyd Richards, sophomore pitcher Sebastian Soliz and junior first baseman Warren Shankle. Honorable mention status went to Joseph Gomez, Aidan Griggsby and Ethan Munoz. SC went 19-10-1 overall and as the district’s fourth seed, swept Houston Milby in the best-of-three bi-district playoff series.

     

                                                                                                                          

     

    Regional Semi-finals Softball Playoffs

     

    Congrats to the Alvin High School Softball team for their Regional Quarter-finals victory over Dobie HS!  The Lady Jackets will face Katy HS in a Best-of-Three Regional Semi-finals series.  The first game will be played on Wednesday, 5/15/19 at Katy HS, the second game will be played on Thursday, 5/16/19 at Alvin HS and if the third game is necessary, it will be played on Friday, 5/17/19 at Alvin HS.  The gates will open at 5:30 p.m and the games start at 6:30 p.m. for all three games.  The ticket prices are $5.00 across the board.

    Lady Jackets complete series sweep over Dobie – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets are heading to the fourth round of the Class 6A Softball Playoffs after defeating Dobie 9-1 on Friday at Mumford High School in Bryan to complete a sweep of the teams’ best-of-three region quarterfinal series. Alvin, who improved to 33-5 overall, had rallied to edge the Lady Longhorns by a 6-5 count in game one on May 6 in Manvel. The Lady Jackets now advance to meet Katy in the best-of-three region semifinal series this week. Game one will be played Wednesday at Katy High School at 6:30 p.m., while game two will be played Thursday at Alvin High School at 6:30 p.m. A third and deciding game would be played Friday at Alvin High School at 6:30 p.m. (if necessary). Alvin erased an early 1-0 Dobie lead with five second-inning runs in game two and never looked back. Mindy Matthews, Clarissa Barron and Victoria Valdez all had three hits in the contest and Jodie Aguirre picked up the win in the pitching circle.

    Malbrough wins state gold in boys’ triple jump – Junior Caleb Malbrough headed a 13 medal performance by the Manvel Mavericks at the Class 5A State Track and Field meet Friday in Austin by winning gold in the boys’ triple jump with a leap of 48 feet and 1.50 inches to also break a school record in the event. Malbrough, who was competing in his first state meet, entered Mike A. Myers Stadium as the state’s top seed in the triple jump. Manvel finished third overall in the boys’ team standings with 43 points, also capturing a silver medal in the boys’ 4X400 relay behind the foursome of Xavier Carter, Davin Wilkins, Adam Mason and Dayvon Henderson  (3:16.34). The Manvel 4X400 relay girls’ squad of Rayah Wynn, Madison Sparrow, Desirae Roberts and Ja`Dasia Sims also took the silver medal in the event (3:50.96) and the MHS boys’ 4X200 relay team of Carter, Henderson, Vinson Brown and Wilkins claimed the bronze (1:26.34). John Robinson also took fifth place for Manvel in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles and Aryn Johnson was sixth in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles.

     

    Mavericks’ season ends in area baseball playoffs – The Manvel Lady Mavericks dropped a 9-6 10-inning heartbreaker to Santa Fe in game two of the teams’ best-of-three Class 5A area baseball series Saturday at Barbers Hill High School to close the season at 15-15 overall. Santa Fe won the series opener by a 15-0 count on Friday. In Friday’s game, the Mavs rallied from a 5-0 deficit to send the game into extra innings. Ladarius Owens highlighted a four-run fifth inning with a bases-loaded double and Jackson Sweeney drove home the tying run with an RBI single in the sixth.

     

    Shadow Creek Shark Report

     

    O’Conner motors to state victory in 100 meters – Sharks’ senior Ashton O’Conner motored to victory in the boys’ 100 meter dash to highlight the performances for Shadow Creek at the Class 5A State Track and Field meet Friday at the University of Texas at Austin’s Mike A. Myers Stadium. O’Conner, who also played on the Sharks’ state finalist football squad last fall, delivered a gold medal winning time of 10.48 seconds. Victoria Wright also just missed medaling for SC with a fourth place in the girls’ 100 meters (12.16) and Morgan Shelton was sixth in the girls’ discus toss.

     

    Sharks’ season ends in area baseball playoffs – The Shadow Creek Sharks saw their season come to a close with 4-0 and 3-2 defeats to Port Neches-Groves in the best-of-three Class 5A Area Baseball Playoff Series last weekend at PNG. The second game went a marathon 12 innings. The Sharks, who competing in the playoffs for the first time in school history, close the season at 19-10-1. Aidan Griggsby delivered a brilliant all-around performance for SC in game two, allowing only two runs in seven innings of work on the mound, while going 3-for-4 at the plate and driving in both Shark runs.

     

                                                                                                                                  

     

    State Track Meet

     

    Congrats to the Manvel High School and Shadow Creek High School Track teams for qualifying several student-athletes for the 5A State Track meet!  The meet will be held at the University of Texas Mike Meyers Stadium on Friday, 5/10/19.  The Field Events/3200 M start at 8:00 a.m. and the Running Events start at 5:30 p.m.

    Congrats to the Manvel HS Baseball team for their Bi-District Playoff victory over Waltrip HS!  The Mavericks will face Santa Fe HS in a Best-of-Three Area series.  The first game will be played on Friday, 5/10/19 at Santa Fe HS.  The gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the game starts at 7:30 p.m.   The second game will be played on Saturday, 5/11/19 at Manvel HS.  The gates open at 12:00 p.m. and the game starts at 1:00 p.m.  If the third game is necessary, it will start 30 minutes after the completion of the second game.  The ticket prices are $5.00 across the board.

     

    Congrats to the Shadow Creek HS Baseball team for their Bi-District Playoff victory over Milby HS!  The Sharks will face Port Neches HS in a Best-of-Three Area Playoff series with all games being played at Crosby HS (333 Red Summit Dr. Crosby, 77532).  Games one and two will be played on Friday, 5/10/19.  The gates open at 4:00 p.m. and the first game will start at 5:00 p.m.  The second game will start at 8:00 p.m.  If the third game is necessary, it will be played on Saturday, 5/11/19 (TBA).  The ticket prices are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.

    Lady Jackets rally for game one victory – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to top Dobie 6-5 in game one of the best-of-three region softball quarterfinal playoff series Monday at Manvel High School. Clarissa Barron tied the game at 5 with a bases-loaded triple and then scored the winning run on Grace Coffelt’s grounder. Alvin (32-5) had advanced to the region quarterfinals with 3-0 and 11-4 victories to sweep their beat-of-three area playoff series with Memorial last weekend. Victoria Valdez’s grand slam sealed the game two win over Memorial for the Lady Jackets, while pitcher Jodie Aguirre also broke the single season strikeout record for Alvin with her 327th K in the second game. Game two of the Lady Jackets’ QF series with Dobie is slated for Friday at 6 p.m. in Manvel, while a third-and-deciding game would be played at 8 p.m. (if necessary).

    Mavericks edge Waltrip in baseball bi-district playoff – The Manvel Mavericks got six strong innings from starter Eric Benitez and edged Houston Waltrip by a 5-3 score in a bi-district baseball playoff contest Friday at MHS. Moving their record to 13-13 for the season, the Mavs got 11 strikeouts from Benitez and RBI apiece by Tyler Labbe, Myles Simmons, Jackson Sweeney and Vincente Robledo. Manvel advances to face Santa Fe in the best-of-three area playoff series this weekend. Game one will be played Friday in Santa Fe at 7:30 p.m., while the second game will be played Saturday in Manvel at 1 p.m. A third and deciding game would be played 30 minutes following the second game (if necessary).

     

    Lady Mavs drop heartbreaker to Friendswood in area SB playoffs – The Manvel Lady Mavericks dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker to Friendswood in a one-game area softball playoff Thursday in Santa Fe. Peyton Wilsey and Brianna Garcia each drove in a pair of runs for the Lady Mavs, who close their season at 21-12. Manvel had blanked Houston Milby by a 14-0 count in the bi-district playoff round a week earlier.

     

    Shadow Creek Shark Report

     

    Sharks sweep Milby in bi-district baseball series – Making their first playoff appearance ever, the Shadow Creek Sharks came away with 8-6 and 6-4 victories over Houston Milby to sweep their best-of-three bi-district baseball series last weekend. Quentus Miles drove in three runs in the Thursday series opener, while Jeremy Jones delivered a pair of RBI’s in the second game. The Sharks (19-8-1) will now face Port Neches-Groves in the best-of-three area playoff series, starting on Friday. All the games will be played at Crosby High School. Game one will be played at 5 p.m., while the second game will be played at 8 p.m. on the same evening. A third-and-deciding game would be played Saturday (TBD, if necessary).

     

    Lady Sharks’ rally falls short in area softball playoffs – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks saw their season come to an end with a 7-3 defeat to Santa Fe in the area softball playoffs on May 3 in Manvel. Trailing 6-0, Shadow Creek (21-10) made a valiant comeback with Celeste Luna’s bases-clearing double in the fifth inning cutting the margin in half. However, Santa Fe added an insurance run in the seventh and held the Lady Sharks off the board in the frame’s bottom half. Shadow Creek, who was competing in the playoffs for the first time in school history, defeated Houston Austin 21-2 in the bi-district round a week earlier.

    Lady Jackets sweep B’wood in bi-district – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets captured a 4-0 and 3-1 sweep of Brazoswood in the Class 6A Bi-District Best-of-Three Softball Playoff series with junior pitcher Jodie Aguirre also picking up her and 28th and 29th wins in the circle to break the single season mark for most victories by an Alvin pitcher. The sweep sends 29-5 Alvin into a best-of-three area playoff series with Pasadena Memorial this week. Game one will be played Wednesday in Alvin at 6:30 p.m., while game two will played Thursday at the Pasadena ISD Sports at 6:30 p.m. A third and deciding game would be played Friday in Alvin at 6:30 p.m. (if necessary). Khori Bolton joined Shae Montemayor and Aguirre with RBI’s in the B’wood series, while Clarissa Barron drilled a solo homer in game two in Clute off the left-field foul pole.

     

    Olszewski to try out with Vikings, Patriots  - Former Alvin Yellowjacket football standout Gunner Olszewski has been to invited to participate in a pair of NFL rookie mini camps during the next two weeks. Olszewski, who was a four-time all-conference player and two-time All-American at Bemidji State University, will travel to Minnesota on Thursday to try out with the Vikings, while the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots have also extended a tryout invitation for Olszewski on May 9.

     

    Clark finishes third at regionals  – Junior Breanna Clark delivered a third place performance for Alvin in the Class 6A girls’ 800 meters race at the Region III meet last weekend in Webster. Clark, who won both the 24-6A and 23/24 area meet races during the previous two weeks, completed the event with an impressive 2:15.45 time.

     

    Manvel Maverick Report

     

    17 Mavericks earn state track and field berths –A total of 17 Manvel Mavericks earned state track and field berths after turning in top performances at the Region III-5A meet last weekend. The Mavs’ triple jump duo of Caleb Malbrough (47-07.50) and Kameryn Alexander (46-11.75) delivered a 1-2 performance in the event and also gained the top two seeds for the event, which will be held May 10 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Aryn Johnson also earned a state berth for Manvel on the girls’ side with a second place in the 100-meter hurdles (14.64), while John Robinson did likewise with a second place in the boys’ 300 hurdles (38.45). The Mavs also took second place in the boys’ 4X200 relay (Davin Wilkins, Xavier Carter, Vinson Brown, Dayvon Henderson and Jermaine Brown with 1:26.36 time) and the 4X400 relay (Carter, Wilkins, Adam Mason, Henderson and Mycah Sesay with 3:18.39 time). Wildcard berths by Manvel were gained by both the boys’ 4X100 relay (Wilkins, Carter, Henderson, V. Brown and J. Brown with 41.25 time) and the girls’ 4X400 relay (Kennedy Shorter, Rayah Wynn, Madison Sparrow, Ja`Dasia Sims, Desirae Roberts and Amanda Mason with 3:52.25 time).

     

    Koda Martin signs free agent deal with Chargers – Former Manvel Maverick and Syracuse University offensive lineman Koda Martin signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Chargers last weekend. Martin helped power the Orange to school record 523 points, including a program-best 38 rushing touchdowns. The former Mav started all 13 games at right tackle for Syracuse, earning third team All-ACC honors. Martin led the Orange offensive lineman in offensive snaps (1,111) and was second on the team in knockdown blocks (31.5).   

     

    Playoff games set for MHS Softball, Baseball – Both the Manvel Softball and Baseball teams will be competing in one-game playoff games this week. After defeating Houston Milby 14-0 on April 26 in Manvel, the Lady Mavs face Friendswood in Santa Fe in an area-round match-up Wednesday at 7 p.m. Peyton Wilsey led the way for the Lady Mavs in last weekend’s bi-district victory with three hits and three RBI’s. The Manvel boys, who edged Shadow Creek for the third place playoff berth last weekend, will host Houston Waltrip in a Thursday 7:30 p.m. bi-district baseball contest.

    SC track sending 13 to state – The Shadow Creek Sharks will be sending a total of 13 student-athletes to the Class 5A state track and field meet on May 10 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas at Austin campus after they turned in impressive performances at the Region III meet last weekend. Ashton O’Connor led the way with a victory in the boys’ 100 meters (10.35), a second place in the 200 meters (21.42) and a second place with SC teammates Lewis Palmer, Carlton Guidry, Axel Cruz, Isaiah Harper and Israel Allen in the boys’ 4X100 relay (40.99). Morgan Shelton won the girls’ discus toss (124-08), as well and the Lady Sharks’ foursome of Celisa` Cook, Victoria Wright, Laiya Palmer and Demetria Phipps emerged victorious in the girls’ 4X100 relay (46.82). Wright also gained a wild card berth for the Lady Sharks in the 100 meters (11.80).

     

    Playoff dates set for SC Softball, Baseball – The playoff dates are set for Shadow Creek Softball and Baseball, who are both competing in the postseason for the first time ever. The Lady Sharks defeated Houston Austin by a 20-2 score in a one-game bi-district softball playoff on April 25 at the Barnett Complex in Houston and will face Santa Fe in a one-game area playoff on Thursday in Manvel at 6:30 p.m. Shadow Creek Baseball, who will represent 24-5A as the fourth seed, will play Houston Milby in a best-of-three bi-district series. Game one will be played Thursday at the Butler Sports Complex in Houston at 7:30 p.m., while game two is slated for Friday at Shadow Creek High School at 5 p.m. A third and deciding game would follow 30 minutes after game two (if necessary).

    Clark wins 800 meters at area – Breanna Clark captured top honors in the girls’ 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes and 18.87 seconds at the 23/24 Class 6A area track and field last weekend at Challenger/Columbia Stadium in Webster. Clark automatically qualified for the Region III-6A meet, which will also be held Friday in Webster. Other top performances for Alvin at area included the 4X100 relay team of Clark, Tobi Phillips, Brittany Clark and Kaylyn Landry finishing fourth.

     

    Lady Yellowjackets meeting Brazoswood in bi-district  - The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets will meet Brazoswood in the best-of-three Class 6A Bi-District Softball Playoff series, starting on Thursday. The 27-5 Lady Jackets host game one in Alvin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, while playing two at Brazoswood High School Friday at 6:30 p.m. A third and deciding game will be played at Santa Fe High School on Saturday at 11 a.m. (if necessary). Alvin closed the regular season by blanking Dickinson 11-0 with Clarissa Barron going 3-for-3 in the contest and Jodie Aguirre pitching a three-hit shutout in the circle. Alvin will be competing in the playoffs for the 23rd time in the last 24 years.

     

    Alvin Baseball remains in playoff contention  – The Alvin Yellowjackets host Dickinson on Friday at 6 p.m. at Nolan Ryan Field with a victory putting the Jackets in position to clinch a playoff berth. Alvin enters Friday in a three-way tie with Clear Creek and Clear Lake in the 24-6A Baseball standings. If Alvin beats Dickinson, while Creek and Lake drop their finales, the Jackets would then advance to the playoffs. If the Jackets are still tied with either Creek or Lake following Friday’s outcomes or both squads, they would then meet in a single game or mini-tournament Saturday in Dickinson. The single game format to break a two-way tie would be played at 1 p.m., while a three-way tie would force the mini-tourney. In that scenario, Creek and Lake would play the opener at 11 a.m., with Alvin facing the winner at 2 p.m.

    MHS Track squads sweep area titles – The Manvel Mavericks swept the 5A team titles at the 23/24 Track and Field meet at Challenger/Columbia Stadium in Webster last weekend. Top performances for the Mavs included Layden Robinson with a first place in the boys’ shot put (50-08) and second place in the discus (127-03), Caleb Malbrough with a first place in the boys’ triple jump (45-05) and Aryn Johnson with a first place in the girls’ triple jump (36-07.25). Manvel next competes at the Region III-5A meet Friday in Webster.

     

    Lady Mavs meet Milby in bi-district playoffs – The Manvel Lady Mavericks will host Houston Milby in a one-game bi-district softball playoff on Friday at 6 p.m. at Lady Mavericks’ Field. Manvel enters the contest with a 20-11 record and 12-4 mark in 24-5A. The Lady Mavs defeated Hightower 16-1 at home on April 18 to close the regular season. Bri Scott and Brittany Hood drove in three runs apiece in the win over Hightower.

     

    Simmons’ slam highlights Mavs’ win – Myles Simmons belted a grand slam homer and drove in six runs to highlight a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, paving the way for 15-1 victory for the playoff-bound Manvel Mavericks over Hightower Tuesday night in 24-5A Baseball action in Missouri City. Jaden Johnson also went 3-for-4 with three RBI’s and Parker Carruth and Isaiah Walker delivered a pair of RBI’s as well.     SC track teams shine at area  – The Shadow Creek Sharks delivered several top performances at the Class 5A 23/24-area track and field meet last weekend at Challenger/Columbia Stadium in Webster. Ashton O’Connor led the way for the Sharks with a first place in the boys’ 100 meters (10.32) and a second place in the 200 (20.87), while Lady Shark Victoria Wright won the girls’ 100 meters (11.95) and took second place in the long jump (18-00) and Morgan Shelton won the girls’ discus toss (118-11) and was second in the shot put (34-11.25). The Sharks will next compete at the Region III-5A meet Friday in Webster.

     

    Lady Sharks play Austin in bi-district – The playoff-bound Shadow Creek Lady Sharks will face Austin in a one-game 5A bi-district softball playoff at the Barnett Complex Thursday in Houston at 7 p.m. The Lady Sharks (20-9 overall, 11-5 in 24-5A) are making their first-ever postseason appearance. Jillian Gutierrez led the way at the plate for SC with four hits and five RBI’s in their 21-0 win over Willowridge last weekend, while Aniyah Burns added four hits and three RBI’s.

     

    Sharks blank Willowridge – The playoff-bound Shadow Creek Sharks kept their momentum going into the upcoming 5A Baseball playoffs with a 10-0 victory over Willowridge in Pearland Tuesday night. Sebastian Soliz fired a one-hitter on the mound with nine strikeouts to lead the way for the Sharks (16-7-1 overall, 10-5 in 24-5A), while Jordin White drove in three runs and Benjamin Greer and Braylon Shoaf added two RBI’s apiece. The Sharks close the regular season with Willowridge on Friday in Houston at 7 p.m. The Class 5A bi-district playoffs are slated to get under way the weekend of May 2-4.     Lady Jackets clinch district crown – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets clinched the 24-6A Softball championship with a 3-0 home win over Clear Springs last weekend and continued their unbeaten district run towards the Class 6A playoffs with a 7-0 victory at Clear Brook Tuesday night. Grace Coffelt joined Clarissa Barron and winning pitcher Jodie Aguirre with two RBI’s apiece, while Mary Pourcio added an RBI triple. Aguirre took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and allowed just one hit and struck out 13. The 26-5 Lady Jackets hosted Dickinson Thursday to close the regular season and will compete in the bi-district playoff round April 25-27.

     

    Jackets top Brook  - Wyatt Fields delivered 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief pitching and Tanner Deitrich drove in a pair of runs to lead the Alvin Yellowjackets to a 7-4 triumph at Clear Brook High School Tuesday. Alvin improved to 9-9 overall and 3-6 in the 24-6A Baseball standings to keep their playoff hopes alive. Erick Vasquez and Hinson drove in runs in the contest, as well, while Hinson also stole home plate for Alvin’s initial tally in the first inning. The Jackets host Brook Thursday night at 6 p.m.

     

    Bentley named new FB coach at Santa Fe  – Matthew Bentley, a 2002 Alvin High School graduate, was named the new head football coach at Santa High School on Monday. Bentley was the team’s defensive coordinator during the previous season. Bentley earned all-district first team honors during his senior season at Alvin in 2001, leading the team with 92 tackles and six sacks and also returning an interception 21 yards for a touchdown in week eight at Brazoswood.

    Lady Mavs gain wins over Foster & Marshall – The Manvel Lady Mavericks moved a step closer to securing the third playoff seed in the 24-5A Softball standings with a 5-3 home victory over Foster on Monday and a 17-2 win over Fort Bend Marshall Tuesday in Missouri City. Riley Bennett belted a two-run double to key the Monday win for Manvel (18-11 overall, 11-4 in district), while Addison Greak went the distance in the pitching circle to pick up the win. The Lady Mavs will be competing in the Class 5A bi-district playoffs April 25-27.

     

    Mavs rebound with win over Marshall – The Manvel Mavericks snapped a two-game losing streak with a 26-0 win over Fort Bend Marshall Tuesday night at home. Jaden Johnson drove in five runs to lead the way, while Isaiah Walker and Riley Palomarez added four RBI’s apiece. Manvel (9-12 overall, 8-5 in district) concluded its district series with Marshall Thursday in Missouri City at 7 p.m.

    Sharks defeat Hightower  – The Shadow Creek Sharks won their fourth straight with a four-run first inning keying a 10-0 victory over Hightower on April 15 in Pearland. Ethan Munoz (3-for-3) singled home Lloyd Richards, while winning pitcher Sebastian Soliz helped his own cause with a two-run triple. Soliz fired a two-hitter and struck out 13.  The Sharks improved to 15-7-1 overall and 9-5 in the 24-5A Baseball standings with the victory. Shadow Creek next hosts Willowridge on April 23 at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Sharks capture back-to-back wins – The playoff-bound Shadow Creek Lady Sharks posted wins over both Marshall (16-0) and Hightower (15-0) last weekend. Jillian Gutierrez and Larissa Maciel led the way with three RBI’s apiece in the win over Marshall. Shadow Creek improved to 19-9 overall and 10-5 in 24-5A play with the two wins. The Lady Sharks close the regular season Thursday at Willowridge at 6:30 p.m. and compete in the bi-district softball playoffs for the first time ever April 25-27.

    Girls’ relays lead way at 24-6A meet – The girls’ 4X200 relay foursome of Breanna Clark, Brittany Clark, Kaylyn Landry and Tobe Phillips delivered a first place performance in the event with a time of 41.03 seconds to highlight the top performances by Alvin High School at the 24-6A Track and Field meet last weekend. The Clark duo also teamed with Landry and Malik Hooker for a second place finish in the 4X400 relay at 3:59.28. Phillips also shined with a pair of third places in the girls’ 200 meters (25.39) and 100 meters (12.42) and Hooker was fourth in the girls’ 400 (1:03.03).

     

    Lady Jackets increase district lead  - The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets came up with a big 3-0 victory over Clear Falls Tuesday night in 24-6A Softball action in League City. The win increased the league-leading Lady Jackets’ lead to two games in the district standings over Falls and also maintained a three-game advantage over Clear Creek. Alvin moved its record to 24-5 overall for the season and 9-0 in district. RBI doubles by Clarissa Barron and Mary Pourcio in the sixth inning highlighted the win over Falls. Winning pitcher Jodie Aguirre also struck out 11 in the contest and allowed only three hits. The Lady Jackets next host Clear Springs on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Jackets suffer heartbreaking defeat  – The Alvin Yellowjackets suffered a heartbreaking 6-5 defeat to Clear Falls in 24-6A Baseball action last weekend at Nolan Ryan Field. Austin Hinson and Eric Vasquez paced the Jackets with two hits apiece. Alvin, who has an overall record of 8-8, next hosts Clear Springs on Friday at 6 p.m.

    Turner taken 11th in WNBA Draft  – Former Lady Maverick hoop standout Brianna Turner was taken as the 11th overall pick of the WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream and then traded to the Phoenix Mercury Wednesday evening. Turner helped lead the Lady Mavs to the program’s first ever state championship in 2014 and also closed her collegiate career as the all-time shot block leader in Notre Dame history. Among the awards that came Turner’s way during her prep career included being named the 5A Championship Game MVP, Gatorade National Women’s Player of the Year and McDonald’s All-American Game MVP.

     

    MHS track and field teams sweep 24-5A titles – The MHS Track and Field teams swept the team titles at the 24-5A meet last weekend in Angleton. The Mavericks compiled 139 points on the boys’ side and 124 points in the girls’ division. Leading the way was Aryn Johnson with a first place in the girls’ triple jump (36-04), Ja`Dasia Sims with a first place in the girls’ high jump (5-00) and a third place in the 800 meters (2:25.49), Julio Ramirez with a first place in the boys’ 3200 (10:18.98) and third place in the 1600 (4:39.02), Caleb Malbrough with a first place in the boys’ triple jump (47-08), Layden Robinson with second places in both the boys’ shot put (46-10) and discus toss (136-07), Sarah Hensley with second places in both the girls’ pole vault (6-00) and 3200 meters (13:07.62), Adam Mason with a second place in the boys’ 800 (1:57.66), Sydnee Williams with a second place in the girls’ 100 hurdles (14.41), John Robinson with second places in both the boys’ 110 hurdles (14.86) and 300 hurdles (39.31), Desiree Roberts with a second place in the girls’ 300 hurdles (40.03), Amanda Mason with a second place in the girls’ 1600 (5:52.89) and Merlany Osuagwu with a third place in the girls’ 200 (25.48).

     

    Hood, Schneider lead Lady Mavs over Terry – Brittany Hood and Karissa Schneider both drove in four runs and Hood also provided three solid pitching relief innings in the circle, as Manvel topped Rosenberg Terry 15-5 in 24-5A Softball action Tuesday night at home. The win moved the Lady Mavs’ to 16-11 overall and 8-4 in district play. Terry opened up a quick 3-0 lead with a three-run first inning, but the Lady Mavs answered with six runs of their own in the frame’s bottom half and never looked back. The Lady Mavs next play Lamar Consolidated Friday in Rosenberg at 6:30 p.m. and then host Foster Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

    Shelton leads Sharks at district track and field meet  – Morgan Shelton won both the girls’ shot put (34-07) and discus toss (116-05) to head the performances for Shadow Creek at the 24-5A track and field meet last weekend in Angleton. Other top performances for SC included Ashton O’Connor with a first place in the boys’ 100 meters (10.52), second place in the 200 (21.20) and third place in the long jump (22-08), Victoria Wright with a first place in the girls’ 100 (12.27) and second place in the long jump (18.07), Curtis Miller with a first place in the boys’ pole vault (13-00), Tairah Johnson with a second place in the girls’ 100 meter hurdles (14.33), Kalyn Prothro with a second place in the girls’ triple jump (36-04), the relay team of Celise Cook, Wright, Laiya Palmer, Mykler Roderique, Demetria Phipps and Johnson with a second place in the girls’ 4X100 (47.51) and the boys’ relay team of Lewis Palmer, O’Connor, Isaiah Harper, Axel Cruz, Carlton Guidry and Israel Allen with a second place in the boys’ 4X100 (40.36).

     

     

    Sharks defeat Hightower – The Shadow Creek Sharks defeated Hightower by a 10-0 score Tuesday in 24-5A Baseball action in Missouri City. The Sharks improved to 14-6-1 overall and 8-5 in district. Lloyd Richards scattered four hits in tossing the shutout on the mound, while also driving in a pair of runs. Ben Greer drilled a triple and scored a pair of runs as well.     Teykl named Jackets’ new football coach – Tim Teykl was named the new assistant athletic director/head football coach for Alvin High School Wednesday afternoon during a AISD workshop meeting. Teykl’s hiring was approved by an unanimous 6-0 vote by the school board. The 1978 Texas A&M graduate guided Rosenberg Terry to 16 playoff berths and compiled an impressive 160-112-1 career record during his 26-year at the school. Other accomplishments for Teykl during his coaching career include being the 2007 winner of the Tom Landry award by the THSCA and serving as the Team Texas head coach for the Bayou Bowl. Teykl has also coached over 120 THSCA Academic All-State players.

     

    Aguirre fires gem against Lake  - Jodie Aguirre struck out 14 and allowed only one hit in leading the league-leading Alvin Lady Jackets to a 2-0 victory over Clear Lake Tuesday in 24-6A Softball action on the road. Aguirre came within one out of throwing her second straight hitter after holding Cy Fair hitless in Alvin’s final game of the Haynie Spirit Tournament last weekend. Khori Bolton and Chloe Foster drove in the two Lady Jacket runs in the sixth inning to help Alvin improve to 22-5 overall and 7-0 in district. The Lady Jackets next host Clear Creek Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

     

    AHS Soccer teams fall in bi-district playoffs – Both AHS Soccer teams saw their seasons come to an end the 6A bi-district playoffs on March 29. The Lady Jackets dropped a 4-1 decision to George Ranch, while the Alvin boys suffered a 4-0 defeat to Strake Jesuit. Kate Recendez pierced the net for Alvin in the girls’ contest. The Lady Jackets close the year at 7-8-1, while the Jackets were making their second straight postseason appearance on the boys’ side.

    Benitez throws one-hit masterpiece  – Eric Benitez threw 6 1/3 frames of no-hit ball and struck out nine as Manvel rolled to a 7-0 win over Lamar Consolidated in 24-5A Baseball action Tuesday night in Manvel. Benitez also slugged a bases-clearing triple to highlight a seven-run fourth inning with Isaiah Walker also supplying a two-run single. Parker Carruth and Dillon Novak chipped in run-scoring doubles as well. The Mavs next play Consolidated Friday in Rosenberg at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Mavs top Willowridge – The Lady Mavericks cruised to an 18-1 triumph over Willowridge in 24-5A Softball action at home on March 29. Jaide Napoleon drove in six runs to lead Manvel offensively, while winning pitcher Brittany Hood and Haley Ratcliff added three RBI’s apiece. The Lady Mavs next play at league-leading Angleton Friday at 6:30 p.m.

    Lady Sharks roll to 10-2 win   – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks rolled to a 10-2 victory over Rosenberg Terry Tuesday night in 24-5A Softball action in Pearland. Ahmeera Bennett led the way for the SC bats with three hits and three RBI’s, while Zara Bennett provided two hits and two RBI’s. Marisa Martinez also had a big night with two hits and two RBI’s. The Lady Sharks next play Lamar Consolidated Friday night in Rosenberg at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Richards’ slam leads Sharks – Lloyd Richards smashed a grand slam homer to highlight a six-RBI and five-hit performance and Ethan Munoz also belted a long ball, as the Shadow Creek Sharks blanked Fort Bend Marshall 21-0 Tuesday in 24-5A Baseball action in Pearland. Ricahrds’ slam came during an 11-run SC second inning. Sebian Hernandez also drove in four runs in the contest and Dejuan Lewis added three RBI’s.     AHS Baseball edges Creek – The Alvin Yellowjackets captured a narrow 4-3 victory over Clear Creek in 24-6A Baseball action Tuesday in League City. Alvin improved to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in district with the win. Carson Keithley went six strong inning, striking out 10 to pick up the victory on the mound, while Levi Whitlock earned a save in relief. Austin Hinson delivered a three-hit performance at the plate, while Erick Vasquez was 2-for-3 and Colin Jeter had the eventual game-winning RBI in the contest. The Jackets next host Creek Friday at Nolan Ryan Field at 6 p.m.

     

    Lady Jackets top Dickinson – The league leading Alvin Lady Yellowjackets completed a perfect first half of play in the 24-6A Softball standings with a 9-1 triumph Tuesday in Dickinson. The Lady Jackets moved their record to 16-4 overall and 6-0 in district play with the victory. Alvin put the game away with six-run fourth inning, which was highlighted by two-run triples by Clarissa Barron and winning pitcher Jodie Aguirre. Aguirre struck out eight and allowed four hits to pick up the win in the circle. Alvin next plays at Clear Lake on April 5 at 6:30 p.m.

    Green invited to compete in All-American game  – Lady Mavs’ senior guard and Texas A&M signee Mckinzie Green has been invited to compete in the Who’s NXT All-American Girls’ Basketball game April 6 in Tampa, Florida. The honors keep flowing in for Green, who was also named to the Chronicle’s All-Greater Houston Area Girls’ Basketball team and selected to play in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ All-Star game. Green, who helped the Lady Mavs advance to the regional finals, ended her high school career as the second leading scorer in Manvel history with 2,801 points.

     

    Benitez fires shutout in Mavs’ win – Eric Benitez fired a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and also provided three hits on the offensive side to lead the Manvel Mavericks to a 5-0 victory at Rosenberg Terry Tuesday night. Myles Simmons also had a big offensive night with three RBI’s, while Dillon Novak added a pair of hits and Benitez and Tyler Labbe also drove in runs. Improving to 4-3 in 24-5A play, the Mavs next host Terry Friday at 7 p.m.

    Lady Sharks win fourth straight   – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks erupted for a seven-run third inning to edge Manvel 10-7 in 24-5A softball action Tuesday night in Pearland. Shadow Creek improved to 6-3 in district and also picked up their first win ever over Manvel since the two area schools started playing each other three years ago. Marisa Martinez provided the big blow for SC in the third with a bases-clearing double to give SC the lead for good. Jullian Gutierrez delivered three hits and also started a inning-ending double play after making a diving catch in center field. Zara Bennett picked up the win for Shadow Creek in the circle. The Lady Sharks next play at Angleton Friday at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Sharks drop 3-2 contest in Richmond – The Shadow Creek Sharks dropped a 3-2 decision at Richmond Foster in 10 innings in 24-5A Baseball action Tuesday night. Ben Greer led the Sharks (10-6-1 overall, 4-5 in district) with a pair of hits and joined Lloyd Richards with an RBI apiece.     AHS Baseball opens district with win – Behind Carson Keithley’s 11 strikeouts, the Alvin Yellowjackets rolled to a 5-1 triumph over Clear Lake in their District 24-6A Baseball opener Tuesday at Nolan Ryan Field. Moving their record to 7-3 overall, the Jackets scored all of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. Colin Jeter delivered a two-run double, while Kyler Mentzel, Jeffrey Myers and Travis Phelps also drove in runs. Keithley also allowed only three hits and four walks in the win. The Jackets next play at Clear Lake Friday at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Jackets rally past Springs – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets rallied for a 4-2 victory over Clear Springs in 24-6A Softball action Tuesday in League City. Moving their record to 14-4 overall and 4-0 in district, the league-leading Lady Jackets trailed 2-1 entering the top of the sixth inning. However, Victoria Valdez and winning pitcher Jodie Aguirre drilled back-to-back RBI doubles and Clarissa Barron drove in an insurance run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly. Aguirre struck out 12 and allowed five hits to pick up the win in the circle. The Lady Jackets next host Clear Brook Friday at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Mancha named to TABC All-Region team again – Lady Yellowjackets’ senior guard Andreea Mancha was named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ All-Region 3 Girls’ Basketball team for the second straight year. Mancha led the Lady Jackets to the playoffs for the third time in four years and also received MVP accolades from 24-6A.

     

    Soccer teams sweep Brook – Both AHS Soccer teams rolled to wins over Clear Brook on Tuesday. The Alvin boys, who are currently in fourth place in 24-5A, edged the Wolverines in a 4-3 shootout in Friendswood. Dylan McCoy scored both Alvin goals in regulation. The Jackets next play at Dickinson Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Jackets blanked Brook by a 2-0 count at AISD Memorial Stadium with Stephanie Hernandez scoring both goals on assists by Rocio Garcia and Luptia Franco.     Green named to both TABC lists  – Lady Mavs’ senior guard and Texas A&M signee Mckinzie Green was named to both the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ 5A All-State and All-Region 3 lists. This marked the second straight time for Green to receive the dual honors. Green closed her high school career as the second leading scorer in Lady Mavericks’ history with 2,801 points. Anessa Duessette also joined Green on the all-region squad.

     

    MHS Soccer teams roll to wins over Marshall – Both playoff bound Manvel Maverick Soccer teams rolled to shutout wins over Fort Bend Marshall Tuesday. The Lady Mavs cruised to an 8-0 decision at home behind two goals apiece by Anahi Altimarano and Lizbeth Granados. Also piercing the next for the Manvel girls were Toni Reid, Hillary Griffin and Alexia Salazar. The Lady Mavs next play Hightower Friday in Missouri City at 7:30 p.m. The Manvel boys collected a 6-0 win in Missouri City behind Michael Dike’s two goals and an assist. Other MHS goals were scored by Christian Villatoro, Luis Moreno, Edwin Rocha and Esteban Lopez. The Mavs next host Hightower Friday at 7:30 p.m.

     

    Lady Mavs’ Softball defeats Marshall – Addison Greak drove in four runs and Desiree DeLaGarza provided three RBI’s to lead the Manvel Lady Mavericks to a 15-0 victory over Fort Bend Marshall in 24-5A Softball action Tuesday in Manvel. Riley Bennett also collected three hits in the contest for the Lady Mavs, who next plays Hightower Friday in Missouri City at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Mavs’ baseball falls in extra innings to Angleton – The Manvel Mavericks dropped a 4-2 decision to Angleton at home in 24-5A Baseball action Tuesday in Manvel. The Mavs saw their district record fall to 3-2 with the defeat. Highlights for Manvel included starter Eric Benitez striking out eight and going the first 7 1/3 frames on the mound and Tyler Labbe driving in a run. Manvel next plays at Angleton Friday at 7 p.m.

    Henry named to TABC lists   – Sharks’ senior guard Tyron Henry was named to both the All-Region 3 and Class 5A All-State boys list for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. This marked the second straight year for Henry to receive recognition for both squads. Henry helped Shadow Creek advance to the area around.

     

    Lloyd fires three hit shutout – Lloyd Richards tossed a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and also paced the Sharks offensively with three hits in a 10-0 SC win over Lamar Consolidated at home in 24-5A Baseball action Tuesday night in Pearland. Sebastian Soliz drove in three runs, as well, and Ben Greer joined Richards in the three-hit department. Improving to 9-5-1 overall and 2-3 in district, the Sharks next play at Consolidated Friday at 7 p.m.

    Lady Jackets open district with 8-0 win – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets opened 24-6A softball play with a 8-0 victory over Clear Lake here Tuesday night. Alvin picked up its 11th win in 15 games to start the 2019 campaign. Jodie Aguirre fired one-hit ball and struck out 10 over five innings, while the Lady Jackets sent 13 batters to the plate during an eight-run third inning. Victoria Valdez delivered a pair of hits to lead the Alvin bats and Mindy Matthews also swiped a pair of bases. The Lady Jackets next meet Clear Creek Friday in League City at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Jackets sweep double header from Friendswood – The Alvin Yellowjackets swept Friendswood by 6-4 and 10-9 scores in non-district baseball action last weekend at Nolan Ryan Field. Jeffrey Myers drove in a pair of runs in the first game, while Collin Jeter delivered three hits in the nightcap with the latter knock in the bottom of the seventh inning paving the way for the walk-off win. Myers also drove in three runs in the contest. The Jackets compete in the host AISD Tournament this weekend.

    Mavs edge Sharks in 24-5A opener  – The Manvel Mavericks edged Shadow Creek by a 2-1 count in the teams’ 24-5A baseball opener Tuesday in Manvel. Eric Benitez went the distance on the mound, surrendering five hits and two walks, while striking out five to pick up the win. Tyler Labbe and Isaiah Walker drove in the runs for Manvel, who scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Mavs face the Sharks again on Friday in Pearland at 7 p.m.

     

    Green named MVP in 24-5A – Senior Mckinzie Green was named to the most valuable player in 24-5A to head the regional playoff finalist Manvel Lady Mavericks’ all-district girls’ basketball selections. Green was joined on the first team by Anessa Dussette, Ashlynn Freeman and Deja Williams, while gaining second team nods were Joy Chanslor and Dani Perdomo. Honorable mention status went to Alana Ervin and Milan Jackson and picking up all-academic honors were Chanslor, Dussette, Ervin, Green, Perdomo and Williams. Manvel finished the season at 37-4 for the program’s second best season ever in school history.

     

    Six Mavs named to all-district boys’ hoop team – A total of six players from the bi-district playoff finalist Manvel Mavericks were named to the All-District 24-5A boys’ basketball team. Albert McBride was selected to the first team and center Shaun Walker earned newcomer of the year honors to head the Manvel picks, while J`Vaun Walker and Mason McBride both made the second team cut. Honorable mention status went to Tyson Guerra and Myles Levine.

    Lady Sharks outlast Terry   – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks rallied from an eight-point deficit to rally past Terry by a 14-10 count in 24-5A Softball action Tuesday in Rosenberg. Trailing 10-2 enter the top of the fifth inning, the Lady Sharks erupted for a four spot and followed with a six-run sixth inning and two tallies during the seventh. Zara Bennett led the way with five RBI’s, while Celeste Luna and Cheyenne Kelly drove in two runs apiece. Shadow Creek next hosts Lamar Consolidated Friday at 6:30 p.m.

     

    SC hoop girls honored for best season ever – The region basketball quarterfinalist Shadow Creek Lady Sharks were honored for delivering their best season in school history with five players being named to the All-District 24-5A Girls’ Basketball team. R’mani Taylor was named the newcomer of the year and also joined Bre`yon White and Sydni John-Baptiste on the first team, while Trintee Jones and Da`Nae Williams both gained second team nods. All academic honors went to Rachel Anderson, Baptiste, Brooklyn Brown, Jaylah Davis, Jones, Taylor and White.

     

    Henry, President head hoop honors for SC boys – Tyron Henry was named the most valuable player and David President was tabbed as the top coach to head the basketball boys’ area finalist Shadow Creek Sharks’ four selections to the All-District 24-5A Boys’ Basketball Team. Henry was joined on the first team by Akin Newton, while Trejon Ware and Will Young were both second team picks.     Elsey named to All-District 24-6A boys’ basketball team – Senior forward Caleb Elsey was a unanimous first team selection to the All-District 24-6A boys’ basketball team. Elsey, who gained second team honors as a junior in 2018, led the Jackets in scoring with 14.3 points per game and 10.1 rebounds. Highlighted by a 32-point and 19-rebound performance in a 67-61 Alvin win over La Porte on Dec. 11, Elsey also delivered 15 double doubles during his senior season.

    Lady Mavericks’ season ends in region finals  – The Manvel Lady Mavericks saw their season come to an end with a 47-39 defeat to Hightower in the Class 5A Region III Girls’ Basketball Finals Feb. 23 at the Aldine Campbell Center. Manvel closes its season at 37-4, which is the second best season ever for the MHS girls’ hoop program. Mckinzie Green, who led the Lady Mavs with a game-high 17 points, also pumped in 25 points along with five bounds and four steals in Manvel’s 70-57 semifinal triumph over College Station on Feb. 22. Anessa Dussette also had a big game with 21 points and nine rebounds and Deja Williams added 17 points.

     

     

    Shadow Creek Shark Report

     

    Sharks edged by Titans in are hoop round  – The Shadow Creek Sharks suffered a 46-36 season ending defeat to Port Arthur Memorial on Feb. 22 in the Class 5A boys’ basketball area playoffs in La Porte. The Sharks led 28-25 after three periods and 32-31 with five minutes remaining, but Memorial went on a 8-0 run to seize control. Tyron Henry led the Sharks with 13 points. Shadow Creek closes its season at 26-6 and with a 74-43 bi-district playoff win over Houston Austin on Feb. 18.

     

                                                                                                                              

     

    Girls Regional Tournament

     

    Congrats to the Manvel High School Girl's Basketball team for their Regional victory over Shadow Creek HS!  The Lady Mav's will face College Station HS in the Regional Semi-finals round of the State Playoffs on Friday, 2/22/19 at the Aldine M. O. Campbell Educational Center (1865 Aldine Bender Aldine, 77032).  The gates open up at 4:30 p.m., the game starts at 6:00 p.m. and the ticket prices are $8.00.  The Maverick fans will sit on the East side of the Campbell Center and the Lady Mav's are the Visitor's.  No passes will be accepted at the gate, no outside food/drink will be allowed inside and no exit/rentry by fans will be allowed.  Hand-held signs are approved, but no articifical noisemakers, ballons or confetti will be allowed per Campbell Center guidelines.  Please make plans to travel to the Campbell Center to support the Lady Mav's as they batte for the Regional Championship!

    Andreea Mancha named MVP in 24-6A – Senior combo guard Andreea Mancha was named the most valuable player in 24-6A and Justin Walker earned coach of the year honors to head the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets’ six all-district basketball selections. Mancha, who averaged over 16 points, led the district in scoring for the bi-district playoff finalist Lady Jackets, who entered the playoffs as the fourth seed from 24-6A. Freshman guard Mercedes Mancha made the second team, while honorable mention nods went to senior power forward Tashayla Foster, junior forward Rayvin Burkhart, junior guard Gabbi Church and sophomore guard Emma Robles.

     

    Lady Jackets’ Softball wins four at Bryan – Lady Yellowjacket Softball won four of six games at the Bryan Tournament last weekend. Alvin (5-3) posted wins over Lufkin (11-4), Cy Ranch (2-1), College Station (4-3) and Mac Arthur (8-1), while suffering losses to Cedar Ridge (5-13) and Dripping Springs (0-4). Alvin also fell at Sweeny by a 3-2 score on Tuesday. Khori Bolton and Jodie Aguirre (who also struck out 11 in contest) drove in the Lady Jacket runs. Alvin next competes at the Lone Star Tournament in Conroe on Feb. 28.

    Armstrong splashes way into record books at state  – Maverick senior Jack Armstrong splashed his way into the record books twice at the Class 5A state swimming and diving meet last weekend at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Armstrong delivered a 20.10 second performance in the boys’ 50-yard freestyle prelims to break Kingwood Park Brooks Powell’s previous mark of 20.28 in the event and Armstrong then went on to swim a 20.20 victory time in the finals. The MHS senior not only shattered his own state record of 44.57 in the 100 free from the previous year, Armstrong’s 43.96 effort was over two seconds faster than silver medalist William Corona (46.05), of Georgetown. Armstrong, who will be attending Auburn University next fall, closes his high school career with five state medals (four gold) overall.

     

    Lady Mavs win in regional quarters for Harris’ 500th career victory –The Manvel Lady Mavericks came away with a 66-51 win in the Class 5A girls’ basketball region quarterfinals Monday at Wheeler Field House in Sugar Land for head coach Bryan Harris’ milestone career victory No. 500. Harris’ Lady Mavs will also be making their first trip to the Region III Tournament this weekend for the first time since their 2014 state championship run. Manvel will meet College Station in the region semifinals Friday at the Aldine Campbell Center at 6 p.m. A victory would advance them into the region finals Saturday at 2 p.m. In Tuesday’s game, Mckinzie Green paced Manvel with 21 points and Deja Williams pumped in 13 points.

     

    Robinson named to TSWA all-state football team – Mavericks’ center Layden Robinson was named to the Texas Sportswriters Association’s Class 5A All-State Football team. Robinson, a third team selection, helped the Mavs advance to the Division II area round. Robinson has also been selected to both the 24-5A and All-Greater Houston Area teams this season.

     

    Softball girls roll to 13-3 victory in district opener – The Manvel Lady Mavericks rolled to a 13-3 triumph over Shadow Creek on Tuesday in the teams’ 24-5A Softball opener in Manvel. Winning pitcher Addison Greak drove in three runs in the contest, while Riley Bennett belted a home run and joined Red Ratcliff with two RBI’s apiece.

     

    MHS Basketball boys fall in bi-district – Despite a game-high 32 points from A.J. McBride, the Manvel boys suffered an 89-80 defeat to Houston Madison in the Class 5A bi-district playoffs Tuesday night at Hopson Field House in Missouri City. The Mavs close their season at 18-13 overall. Mason McBride also scored in double figures for Manvel with 14 points.

    Butler named co-coach of the year by Texas Sportswriters  – Brad Butler was named the co-coach of the year in Class 5A by the Texas Sportswriters’ Association and defensive back Xavion Alford was named to the organization’s all-state first team to head the Sharks’ six player selections to the squad. Butler, who shared the coaching award with Highland Park’s Randy Allen, guided the 15-1 Sharks to the Division I state finals with Shadow Creek becoming just the third Texas high school football program in history to accomplish the feat. Quarterback Jamarian George joined offensive tackle Cam`Ron Johnson and linebacker Jeremiah Harris on the second team, while running back Marquez Huland and defensive end Alec Bryant got honorable mention nods.

     

    Sharks defeat Austin in bi –district – The 24-5A Champion Shadow Creek Sharks cruised to a 74-43 victory over Houston Austin in the Class 5A boys’ bi-district basketball playoffs Monday at Alvin High School. The 26-5 Sharks were led by Will Young with 17 points, Kyron Drones with 11 points and Tyron Henry and Trejon Ware with 10 points each. Shadow Creek now advances to meet Port Arthur Memorial in the area playoff round at 7 p.m. on Friday at La Porte High School.

     

     Lady Sharks’ run falls short in region quarters – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks saw their season come an end with a 66-51 defeat to Manvel in the Class 5A girls’ basketball region quarterfinals Monday at Wheeler Field House in Sugar Land. The Lady Sharks, who were making their first appearance ever in the region quarter round, close their best season ever at 21-14 overall.     AHS powerlifting girls win at Pearland – The AHS Powerlifting girls completed their invitational season Feb. 5 at Pearland, capturing their third team title of the season. The Lady Jackets finished the season with 19 gold medals, 13 silver medals, nine bronze medals and several other fourth and fifth places finishes individually. Outstanding invitational lifers were Karina Macias, Nancy Meza and Trinity Ruiz, who all took the gold in each invitational meet of the season. The Lady Jackets currently has 14 lifters with the ability to qualify for the Region IV Division I Championships on Feb. 21 at Waller High School.

     

    Lady Jackets’ season ends in bi-district hoops – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets saw their season come to an end in the Class 6A bi-district girls’ basketball playoffs with a 48-39 defeat to Alief Elsik Tuesday night at Shadow Creek High School in Pearland. The Lady Jackets, who close the season at 15-17, led 34-33 after three periods, but the Lady Rams staged a 15-5 run in the fourth quarter to claim the victory. Emma Robles led Alvin with 13 points and Andreea Mancha added nine points. Alvin entered the playoffs as the fourth seed from 24-6A.

     

    Soccer girls blank Brook – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets improved to 2-3 in the 24-6A girls’ soccer ranks with a 3-0 home win over Clear Brook Tuesday night at AISD Memorial Stadium. Senior Rhi Navarro joined senior Mackenzie Duncan and senior Charlotte Schmidt with goals, while Madison Ayres dished out assists, along with Luptia Franco and Haylie Whitlock had two saves at keeper. The Lady Jackets next play at Dickinson on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

     

    Alvin Softball girls win season opener – Jodie Aguirre struck out 14 and tossed a three-hitter to lead the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets to a 5-1 season-opening softball victory in Manvel Tuesday night. Grace Coffelt went 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs to lead the Alvin offense, while Clarissa Barron and Aguirre both had two hits and Victoria Valdez also drove in a run. The Lady Jackets next compete at the Bryan Tournament this weekend.

    Lady Mavericks roll in bi-district  – The Manvel Lady Mavericks opened the Class 5A bi-district girls’ basketball playoffs with an 82-18 victory over Houston Northside Monday night at Barnett Field House in Houston. Anessa Dussette led the way with 21 points, while Mckinzie Green chipped in 18 points. Improving their record to 34-3, the Lady Mavs advance to meet Friendswood Thursday in the area round Thursday at Alvin High School at 8 p.m.

     

     

    Mavericks clinch boys’ hoop playoff spot – Despite suffering a 69-63 defeat to Hightower in their regular season finale on Tuesday, the Manvel Mavericks clinched a spot in the Class 5A boys’ basketball playoffs with Richmond Foster’s loss at Rosenberg Terry the same evening. As the fourth seed from 24-5A, the Mavs will face the district champion from 23-6A on Feb. 18 or Feb. 19 at a site and time to be determined. Albert McBride led the Mavs with 22 points in Tuesday’s contest, while Myles Levine added 14 points.

     

    Soccer girls blank Marshall – The Manvel Lady Mavericks collected a 6-0 shutout over Fort Bend Marshall Monday in 24-5A girls’ soccer action in Missouri City. Anahi Altimarano delivered a three-goal hat track, while Toni Reid added two goals and Madeline Fuentes also pierced the net for the Lady Mavs. Moving their district record to 5-2, the Lady Mavs next host Hightower on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

    Lady Sharks defeat Madison in bi-district basketball playoffs – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks rolled to a 91-48 victory over Madison in the Class 5A bi-district girls’ basketball playoffs Monday night at Butler Field House in Houston. Improving their record to 19-13, the Lady Sharks were led by R`mani Taylor with 18 points, Da`nae Williams with 16 points, Jaylah Davis with 13 points and Trintee Jones with 11 points. Shadow Creek advances to play Galveston Ball in the area round Thursday night at Alvin High School at 6 p.m.

     

     

    Sharks to meet Austin in boys’ bi-district hoops – The 24-5A Champion Shadow Creek Sharks will meet Houston in the Class 5A boys’ basketball playoffs Feb. 18 at Alvin High School with a 6 p.m. tip-off. The Sharks completed their district campaign with a 15-1 mark after topping Willowridge by an 87-54 count Tuesday night.     AHS Swimmers compete at regionals – Colby Patterson swam to an eighth place in the boys’ 100-yard breaststroke at the Region 6-6A Meet last weekend in Pearland. Patterson also set a new Alvin record in the event during prelims at 59.74 seconds. Other top finishes for Alvin included Dane Hoelting with a 13th place in the boys’ 50 free and a 15th place in the boys’ 100 free, Alejandro Acosta with a 14th place in the girls’ 500 free; Gabriel Mayfield, Zachary Peterson, Daniel Gajic and Hoelting with a 13th place in the boys’ 200 free relay; Victoria Peterson, Ashton Taylor and Caitlyn Yokum and Aria Murdie with a 14th place in the girls’ 200 free relay; and Acosta, Leah Nelson, Peterson and Murdie with a 14th place in the girls’ 400 free relay.

     

    Lady Jackets clinch fourth seed playoff spot – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets clinched the fourth seeded playoff spot in 24-6A with a 44-37 victory in the regular season finale over Dickinson here Tuesday. Moving their record to 15-16 overall and 6-6 in district, the Lady Jackets advance to meet Alief Elsik in the Class 6A girls’ bi-district playoffs at Shadow Creek High School on Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Senior guard Andreea Mancha, who was also honored earlier for reaching the 1,000 point plateau in her high school career, led the way with a game-high 17 points, while Gabbi Church added seven points and Mercedes Mancha chipped in six points.

    Armstrong breaks two records at regionals  – Jack Armstrong broke a pair of records for Manvel at the Region 7-5A Meet last week in Sugar Land. Armstrong set both region and Dan Cook Natatorium pool records in the 50-yard free (20.31) seconds and the 100-yard (44.44 seconds). The times have earned Armstrong the top seed in both events for the Class 5A Swimming and Diving Meet Feb. 15-16 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Armstrong won both events at state in 2018, becoming the first Manvel swimmer to win a gold medal. Junior Hayden Wisnoski also won the boys’ diving competition (299.30) to earn an automatic state berth, while Armstrong teamed with Brendan Diffley, Nick Shirdon and Ryan Cade Kuykendall to deliver a fourth place and state call-up bid in the boys’ 200 free relay (1:30.45).

     

    Lady Mavericks gain top seed for playoffs – After defeating Richmond Foster by a 47-31 count in their regular season finale on Tuesday, the playoff-bound Manvel Lady Mavericks also won the coin flip for the No. 1 seed in 24-5A with Hightower on Wednesday. Carrying a 33-3 overall record, the Lady Mavs will face Houston Northside in the Class 5A girls’ bi-district playoffs on Feb. 11 at Houston’s Barnett Field House at 5:30 p.m. In Tuesday’s win over Foster, Mckinzie Green led the way with 19 points and Deja Williams added 16 points.

     

    Mavericks keep playoff hopes alive –Albert McBride pumped in 29 points, as the Manvel Mavericks rallied to top Richmond Foster 67-66 Tuesday night at the MHS Competition Gym. Manvel (8-6) went on a 28-16 run in the final eight minutes to pull out the victory and keep their playoff hopes alive in the 24-5A boys’ basketball race. The Mavs next meet Fort Bend Marshall on Friday in Missouri City at 7 p.m.

     

    MHS student athletes ink collegiate letters – A total of 18 student athletes inked collegiate letters of intent during National Signing Day on Wednesday. The list for football included Noah Haygood (Southern Nazarene), Jhase Edwards (University of Incarnate Word), Roland Kimble (Missouri Southern State), Justin Valenzuela (Southern Nazarene), Devon Roush (East Central University), Garrison Johnson (Syracuse), Jermaine Brown (Stephen F.     Garcia earns state swim berth – Freshman Gabby Garcia delivered a second place performance in the girls’ 100 free at the Region 7-5A meet last weekend in Sugar Land to earn a state swim berth. Garcia finished the 100 free in 55.34 seconds, while placing third in the 50 free. The Class 5A State Swimming and Diving Meet will be held Feb. 15-16 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center on the University of Texas at Austin campus.

     

    Sharks clinch district crown – The Shadow Creek Sharks wrapped up the undisputed 24-5A boys’ basketball crown with a 71-62 triumph over Hightower Tuesday night in Pearland. Going on a 32-20 run in the final 10 minutes, Shadow Creek moved its record to 25-5 overall and 14-1 in district. Akin Newton led the Sharks with 18 points, followed by Kyron Drones and Will Young with 15 points apiece and Tyron Henry with 13 points. The Sharks finish the regular season on Feb. 12 against Willowridge in Houston. The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks will be also be aiming for a playoff berth on Friday, facing Angleton in a fourth place play-in game at Manvel High School at 7 p.m.

    AHS Swimmers compete at district – Colby Patterson swam to a third place in the boys’ 100-yard breaststroke to head the list of region qualifiers for the Alvin Yellowjackets at the District 24-6A Swimming and Diving Meet Jan. 24-25 in Texas City. Patterson completed the breaststroke event in 1 minute and 1.12 seconds, while Dane Hoelting delivered fourth and sixth places in the 50 free (22.98 seconds) and 100 free (51.37 seconds) and Alejandro Acosta earned a regional berth as well on the girls’ side with a fifth place in the 500 free at 5:34.91. Alvin also gained qualifying performances in six relay races combined. For the AHS boys, the 200 medley foursome of Taylor Stewart, Patterson, Hoelting and Gabriel Mayfield finished fourth with a time of 1:46.48, while the 200 free team of Mayfield, Zachary Peterson, Daniel Gajic and Hoelting placed fifth at 1:39.65 and Stewart teamed with Gajic, Patterson and Peterson for a fifth place in the 400 free at 4:11.50. In the girls’ relays, Leah Nelson combined with Victoria Peterson, Acosta and Aria Murdie for a fourth place in the 200 medley at 2:04.79, while Peterson teamed with Ashton Taylor, Caitlyn Yokum and Murdie for a fifth place in the 200 free (1:54.00) and Acosta combined with Yokum, Taylor and Nelson for a fifth place in the 400 free (4:14.29).

     

    Hall named to TSWA All-State Volleyball Team – Alvin Lady Yellowjacket Senior Setter Gabby Hall was an honorable mention selection to the Texas Sportswriters Association’s All-State Class 6A All-State Volleyball Team. Hall, who was also an all-district selection, ranked among the leaders in 24-6A in assists and double double performances for the Lady Jackets last fall.

     

    Jackets pick up first league hoop win – The Alvin Yellowjackets got 23 points from Caleb Elsey and 17 points by Sam Bell to pave the way for a 59-47 victory over Clear Falls on Jan .25 at the AHS Competition Gym. The win was the first for Alvin in 24-6A boys’ basketball play and also avenged an earlier loss to the Knights in overtime. Travis Phelps also hit a key three-pointer late in the contest to secure the victory. The Jackets next host Clear Brook on Friday at 7 p.m.

    Armstrong breaks two record at regionals  – Jack Armstrong broke a pair of records for Manvel at the 25-5A Swimming and Diving Meet last weekend in Sugar Land. Armstrong broke the Dan Cook Natatorium pool record in the boys’ 50-yard free at 20.67 seconds, while also setting a new mark in the 100 free at 45.25 seconds. Manvel finished second in both the boys and girls divisions overall. Hayden Wisnoski also won the one-meter boys’ diving competition (293.20) for the Mavs, while Brendan Diffey captured the boys’ 100 backstroke (1:01.80) and James Parker captured top honors in the boys’ 100 breaststroke (1:09.47). Second places for Manvel went to Barbara Lomeli-Ibarra in the girls’ 200 free (36.63), Cade Kuykendall in both the boys’ 100 fly (59.70 seconds) and 500 free (5:43.88) and Jazzlyn Burdette in the girls’ 500 free (7:32.20).

     

    Lady Maverick foursome named to TSWA all-state volley squad – Setter Ceci Harness joined outside hitters Aryn Johnson and Macy Witt-Nobles and middle blocker Morgan Smith as honorable mention selections to the Texas Sportswriters Association’s Class 5A All-State Volleyball Team. All four individuals were all-district honorees with Harness also being recognized as the top setter in both 24-5A and the Greater Houston Area Coaches Association.

     

    MHS Basketball sweeps Terry – Manvel Maverick Basketball both posted varsity wins over Terry on Tuesday. The co-leading Lady Mavericks defeated the Lady Rangers by a 71-19 count in Rosenberg. Mckinzie Green pumped in 21 points and Joy Chanslor added 15 points. The Lady Mavs, who improved to 31-3 overall and 13-1 in 24-5A, next host Lamar Consolidated on Friday at 7 p.m. The Mavericks topped Terry by a 65-60 count in the boys’ game in Manvel. Albert McBride paced Manvel with 22 points, followed by Shaun Walker with 18 points and Zaire Hayes with 13 points. The Mavs next play at Lamar Consolidated on Friday at 7 p.m.

    Sharks sweep district swim titles – The Shadow Creek Sharks swept boys and girls’ team titles with 176 and 205 points, respectively at the District 25-5A Swimming and Diving Meet last weekend in Sugar Land. Gabby Garcia led the way with victories in both the girls’ 50 free (25.74 seconds) and the 100 free (56.45 seconds) races. Other individual first places for SC included Isabel Cordova in the 200 free (2:18.49), Antuan Robinson in the boys’ 200 free (1:59.79), Lara Alcasabas in the girls’ 200 IM ((3:23.56), Roman Herrera in the boys’ 200 IM (2:20.06), Brianna Phan-Tran in the girls’ 100 fly (1:07.93), Tritini Clarke in the girls’ 500 free (6:54.59), Syd Williams in the boys’ 500 free (5:24.55) and Alana Anderson in the girls’ 100 backstroke (1:09.54).     Lady Shark duo named to TSWA All-State VB team – Shadow Creek Lady Sharks’ outside hitters Alexis Williams and Halle Sanders were both honorable mention selections to the Texas Sportswriters Association’s All-State Volleyball Team. Both Sanders and Williams also earned all-district honors in 24-5A.

     

    Sharks top Foster – Tyron Henry pumped in a game-high 20 points, while Will Young added 15 points and Akin Newton chipped in 11 points to pave the way for an 85-52 triumph for Shadow Creek over Richmond Foster in 24-5A boys’ basketball action Tuesday night in Pearland.     Lady Jackets rally for 42-40 victory – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets rallied for a 42-40 victory over Clear Creek to keep their playoff hopes alive in the 24-6A girls’ basketball race Tuesday night in Alvin. Senior Andreea Mancha led the way with a game-high 23 points and hit the two go-ahead free throws with 22 seconds left in the contest. Freshman Mercedes Mancha added nine points and Rayvin Burkhart provided six rebounds as well for Alvin, who improved to 13-14 overall and 4-4 in district. The Lady Jackets next play Clear Falls on Friday in League City at 7 p.m.

     

    AHS Soccer boys blank Kempner – The AHS Soccer Boys got a pair of goals from Dylan McCoy and seven saves from keeper Adrian Alvarez to pave the way for a 4-0 triumph over Kempner Tuesday night at AISD Memorial Stadium. Alvin improved to 6-3 for the season under new head coach Chris Stromeyer. McCoy pierced the net with the game’s first goal after taking a pass from Jamie Moreno at the 17-minute mark. Moreno then drilled a shot into the net from 25 yards out and after Jose Serranto delivered the third goal with a steal in the Kempner box, McCoy provided the fourth goal to put the match out of reach. Alvin next hosts Katy on Friday at Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

    Manvel Soccer girls top Willowridge  – The Manvel High School Varsity Soccer girls continued their red hot start to the 2019 season with a 10-1 home victory over Willowridge Tuesday night. The Lady Mavs improved to 6-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the 24-5A standings. Toni Reid led the way with a three-goal hat trick, while Anahi Altimarano and Lizbeth Granados added two goals each and Hillary Griffin joined Alondra Perez and Alexia Salazar with a goal apiece. The Lady Mavs next play at Angleton on Jan. 29.

     

    MHS Basketball boys take 65-52 win – The MHS Varsity Basketball boys captured a 65-52 win over Willowridge in 24-5A boys’ basketball action on Jan. 18 in Manvel. Albert McBride pumped in a game-high 24 points, while Shaun Walker added 16 points and Tyson Guerra chipped in 10 points. Moving their record to 5-5 in 24-5A, the Mavs next play at Angleton on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Maverick hoops roll to victory – Getting a game-high 18 points from McDonalds’ All-American nominee Mckinzie Green, the co-leading Manvel Lady Mavericks rolled to a 67-15 victory over Willowridge on Jan. 18 in Houston. Dani Perdomo added 12 points for the Manvel girls, who improved to 29-3 overall and 11-1 in district. The Lady Mavs next host Angleton on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.

    Sharks remain in first place despite first district defeat – While suffering their first loss in the 24-5A boys’ basketball ranks by a 72-67 count to Rosenberg Terry Tuesday in Pearland, the Shadow Creek Sharks remained in first place in the league standings. The Sharks hold an overall record of 17-5 along with a 10-1 league mark. Shadow Creek was coming off a 73-44 win at Angleton on Jan. 18 behind 21 Tyron Henry points and 14 by Kyron Drones. The Sharks next play at Lamar Consolidated on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.

    Lady Jackets capture second at Katy Classic – The Alvin High School Varsity Soccer Girls captured second place at the Katy Classic last weekend. The Lady Yellowjackets posted wins over the host Lady Tigers (2-1) and Fort Bend Travis (2-1) to advance to the championship match. Alvin won their opening match in a shootout with Madison Ayres joining Charlotte Schmidt and Katie Recendez with the shootout scores. Keeper Haylie Whitlock also delivered a 15-save performance at the net. Rocio Garcia and Ayres scored the Alvin goals in the win over Travis, while Harley Westling (also named the Alvin player of the tournament) came up with 14 steals in the match. The Lady Jackets advanced to the championship match against North Shore, falling by a narrow 2-1 margin in another contest, which was decided by a shootout. The Alvin girls next compete at the Duncanville Classic this weekend.

     

    Powerlifting teams shine at Dickinson – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets opened their season by winning the powerlfitng meet title at Dickinson on Jan. 12, while Alvin delivered a strong performance on the boys’ side with a second place finish. First places for the Alvin girls went to Christina Varela in the 105-pound weight class, while Nancy Meza won the 105 division and Karina Macias and Trinity Ruiz took top honors in the 165 and 220-pound classes, respectively. Amanda Barrera provided a runner-up finish in the 97-pound class, as did Araceli Dale in the 123 class, Camila Recendez in the 148 class and Belen Almader in the 259 class. Heading up the individual places for the Jackets were second places for both Mateo Gallegos (123 class) and David Aviles (181 class).

     

    Church sparks Alvin Basketball girls to win – Junior guard Gabbi Church pumped in a career high 27 points to help the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets pick up a key 46-36 victory at Dickinson in 24-5A girls’ basketball action on Jan. 11. Alvin improved to 3-3 in the league standings with the win. Senior Andreea Mancha also scored in double figures with 10 points. Church drained an impressive 7 of 9 three-pointers (78 percent) for the contest and made 8 of 13 of her shots (62 percent) overall. Junior Mariah Byone chipped in eight rebounds, while Church joined Rayvin Burkhart with five boards apiece. The Lady Jackets next play at Clear Lake Friday at 7 p.m.

    Lady Mavericks move into first place tie  – Fresh off moving a tie for first place last weekend, the Manvel Lady Mavericks delivered a 63-50 home victory over Shadow Creek in 24-5A girls’ basketball action on Tuesday. The win improved the Lady Mavericks’ record to 28-3 overall and 10-1 in district. Mckinzie Green pumped in a game-high 28 points to lead the way, while Deja Williams added 13 points. The Lady Mavs had moved into a tie in the league standings with a clutch 57-46 triumph over Hightower on Jan. 11. Green led all scorers with 19 points in that contest as well. The Lady Mavs next play Willowridge on Friday in Missouri City at 7 p.m.

     

    Mavs’ Soccer captures 2-0 win – The MHS Varsity Soccer boys captured a 2-0 win over Shadow Creek Tuesday in Pearland. The Manvel goals were scored by Adrian Guerrero in the first half and Alejandro Morales in the second half. The Mavs next play Willowridge on Jan. 22 in Missouri City.

     

    Manvel Basketball boys edged by Hightower, SC – The Manvel Mavericks suffered a pair of close losses in 24-5A boys’ basketball play over their last two games. Manvel (4-5 in district) dropped an 80-66 decision to Hightower on Jan. 11 in Missouri City, while falling to Shadow Creek by a 69-51 count Tuesday night in Pearland. Shaun Walker delivered a double double for the Mavs with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the Hightower contest, while A.J. McBride pumped in 17 points against the Sharks.     Sharks pull away late for 69-51 victory – Tyron Henry and Akin Newton combined for 23 points in the fourth quarter to help the league-leading Shadow Creek Sharks pull away late and collect a 69-51 win over Manvel on Tuesday in Pearland at the Shark Tank gymnasium in 24-5A boys’ basketball action. Henry led all scorers with 30 points, while Newton added 20 points. The Sharks went on a decisive 29-17 run in the final period to put the game away. Moving their record to 17-4 overall and 9-0 in district, Shadow Creek next plays at Angleton Friday at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Sharks defeat Willowridge – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks rolled behind a balanced scoring attack and topped Willowridge by a 77-21 count on Jan. 11.     Mancha leads Lady Jackets past Brook – Senior guard Andreea Mancha pumped in 12 of her game-high 27 points during the fourth quarter to lead the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets to a 54-50 victory over Clear Brook Tuesday night in District 24-6A girls’ basketball action in Alvin. The win kept the Lady Jackets (11-13 overall, 2-3 in district) in playoff contention in the league standings. With game tied at 48 late in the final period, Mancha drove to the hoop to give Alvin the lead for good with 22 seconds remaining. Emma Robles also scored eight points in the contest for the Lady Jackets and Mercedes Mancha chipped in seven points. The Lady Jackets next play at Dickinson on Friday at 7 p.m.

     

    Jackets edged at Brook – The Alvin Yellowjackets suffered a narrow 56-52 defeat to Clear Brook Tuesday night in 24-6A boys’ basketball action in Friendswood. The teams went back and forth at each other throughout with the scoring being tied at 41 after three quarters, before Brook outscored Alvin by a 15-11 count in the fourth quarter. Brayden Wright scored a game-high 17 points for Alvin, while Caleb Elsey delivered a double double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. The Jackets next host Dickinson on Friday at 7 p.m.

    Mavericks gain 18 all-district football selections – The area finalist Manvel Mavericks gained 18 selections to the All-District 11-5A Division-2 Football Team. Running backs Garrison Johnson and Ladarius Owens were both named to the first team offensive squad along with receiver Eric Hebert and offensive linemen Layden Robinson, Demerius Countee and Jamail Zenon. Maverick all-district first team picks featured tackle De`undre Potts, end TJ Hardison, inside linebackers Devon Roush and Jermaine Brown, outside linebacker Trevion Robertson, safeties Noah Haygood, and Treyvon Jenkins and cornerbacks Kamryn Alexander and Vinson Brown. Receiver Jalen Paxton joined linemen Jhase Edwards and Colton Ray as second team selections on offense. Manvel finished the season with 9-3 record and defeated Barbers Hill in the bi-district round.

     

    MHS hoop teams sweep Marshall – Both Manvel Maverick varsity basketball teams collected wins over Fort Bend Marshall Tuesday. The Manvel boys edged Marshall by a 51-50 count at home behind Albert McBride’s 20 points. The Mavs improved to 16-9 overall and 4-3 in 24-5A with the victory. Manvel next plays Hightower on Friday at 7 p.m. in Missouri City. The Lady Mavericks topped Marshall by a 83-24 count Tuesday in Missouri City. Mckinzie Green led the way for the Lady Mavs (26-3 overall, 8-1 in 24-5A) with a game-high 25 points, followed by Joy Chanslor with 18 points, Anessa Dussette with 16 points and Deja Williams with 12 points.     George, Butler head state finalist Shark district picks –Quarterback Jamarian George was named the most valuable player and Brad Butler was tabbed as the league’s top coach to head the state finalist Shadow Creek Sharks’ 16 selections to the All-District 10-5A Division-1 Football team. Joining George on the first team offense was running back Marquez Huland, receiver Kealon Jackson and linemen Damien Jackson and Cam`ron Johnson. Ends Alec Bryant and Ronald Triplett both gained first team defensive nods along with inside linebacker Jeremiah Harris, safety Xavion Alford and cornerback Jevin Murray. Second offensive nods for SC went to offensive lineman Josh Martin, receiver Jared Jackson and place kicker Greg Ezechukwu, while the second team defensive picks included inside linebacker Warren Shankle, safety Jaylen Lane and cornerback Kaymen St. Junious. The 15-1 Sharks became just the third first-year program in Texas high school football history to advance to the state title game. The 10-5A D-1 Champs posted playoff wins over New Caney Porter, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Richmond Foster and San Antonio Wagner. While falling to Highland Park in the state championship game, George delivered a state finals’ record 99 yard TD run in the contest.

    Jackets edged by Creek – Despite a game-high 25 points by Caleb Elsey, a fourth quarter rally by the Alvin Yellowjackets fell a little short in a 54-51 defeat to Clear Creek in the 24-6A boys’ basketball opener for both teams Tuesday at the AHS Competition Gym. Alvin (6-10 overall) trailed by 10 entering the fourth quarter, before going on a run to cut the deficit to three in the closing seconds. The Jackets next play Clear Falls on Friday in League City, before competing at the Calallen Tournament Dec. 28-29.

     

    Lady Jackets suffer tough loss to Creek – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets suffered a tough 47-37 loss to Clear Creek on Tuesday in 24-6A girls’ basketball action in League City. Alvin dropped to 10-10 overall and 1-1 in district with the defeat. Senior guard Andreea Mancha led Alvin with 14 points, while Gabbi Church and Mercedes Mancha added nine points each. Tashayla Foster also pulled down nine rebounds. The Lady Jackets next host Clear Falls on Friday at 7 p.m., while playing at Cy Woods in a non-district affair on Dec. 28.     Green’s 40 leads Lady Mavs – Senior guard and Texas A&M commit McKinzie Green poured in a game-high 40 points to lead the Manvel Lady Mavericks to a 74-20 triumph at Angleton on Tuesday in 24-5A girls’ basketball action. Manvel improved its record to 18-2 overall and 4-1 in 24-5A with the victory. Joy Chanslor and Deja Williams also scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.     Mavericks drop close contest with Angleton – The Manvel Mavericks dropped a 64-58 decision to Angleton at home in 24-5A boys’ basketball action Tuesday night. Manvel led 42-35 entering the final period, before the Wildcats went on a 29-16 run to take control.     Sharks to meet Highland Park for title – The Shadow Creek Sharks topped San Antonio Wagner by a 41-24 count in the state semifinals last weekend in Houston to earn a date with Highland Park in the Class Division-1 State Football Finals on Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington at 11 a.m.. The 15-0 Sharks will be looking to become just the third Texas high school football team in their first year of varsity existence to win a state championship. Beaumont West Brook (1982) and Lubbock Estacado (1968) are the other programs to accomplish the feat. In SC’s win over Wagner, the Sharks erupted for 27 fourth quarter points to pull off the victory. Quarterback Jamarian George dashed 58 yards for the go-ahead touchdown, while defensive back Ronald Nunnery delivered a 105-yard return of a missed extra point to seal the win in the closing minutes. George also had touchdown runs of 5 and 44 yards in the contest.

     

    Henry, Newton lead SC Basketball boys – Tyron Henry and Akin Newton each pumped in a game-high 26 points to lead Shadow Creek to a 107-71 triumph over Lamar Consolidated in 24-5A boys’ basketball action on Tuesday. The Sharks improved to 13-4 overall and 4-0 in district with the victory. Ramon Walker added 13 points and Tre Hartfield chipped in 10 points for Shadow Creek, who next plays at Richmond Foster on Friday at 7 p.m.

    Big performances by Elsey and Wright lead Jackets – A pair of double-double performances by senior Caleb Elsey and junior Brayden Wright paved the way to a 67-61 victory for the Alvin Yellowjackets Tuesday night in La Porte in non-district boys’ basketball action. Elsey pumped in 32 points and 19 rebounds, while Wright added 18 points and 16 boards. Junior Carson Keithley also dished out eight assists, while seniors Adam Gonzales and Edward Recendez contributed three steals apiece. The Jackets next play Brazoswood Friday in Clute at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Jackets made GHVCA All-Academic list – Alvin High School student athletes Haley Gaddy, Hadlee Morris and Tobi Phillips were all named to the Greater Houston Area Volleyball Coaches Association’s All-Academic list.

     

    Alvin Basketball girls rally to top Dulles – The Alvin Lady Jackets outscored the Dulles Lady Vikings by a 13-10 count in the fourth quarter to rally for a 39-37 triumph on Dec. 7 at the AHS Competition Gym. Senior guard Andreea Mancha led the way with a game-high 14 points and four assists, while freshman Mercedes Mancha also scored in double figures with 11 points. Junior Mariah Byone led Alvin in the rebounding department with 10 boards and sophomore Emma Robles contributed six rebounds. The Lady Jackets (9-9 overall) next open 24-6A play by hosting Clear Lake on Friday at 7 p.m.

    Lady Mavs make GHVCA lists – The Manvel Lady Mavericks were honored by the Greater Houston Area Volleyball Coaches Association for their work both on the athletic front and inside the classroom. Junior Ceci Harness (first team) joined sophomore Aryn Johnson (second team) and junior Morgan Smith (honorable mention) on the postseason team, while senior Michaela Kaspar was named to all-academic team.

     

    Mavericks collect win over Willowridge – The Manvel Mavericks got 18 points to lead a balanced attack and a 80-71 win over Willowridge in 24-5A boys’ basketball action Tuesday in Missouri City. Albert McBride added 16 points for the Mavs, while other double figure scoring for the Manvel boys featured Azari Woods with 15 points, J`vaun Walker with 14 points and Trey Martinez with 10 points. The Mavs next host Angleton on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.

     

    Manvel hoop girls roll past Lady Eagles – The Manvel Lady Mavericks rolled to a 74-20 home victory over Willowridge in 24-5A girls’ basketball action Tuesday night. Mckinzie Green led the Lady Mavs with a game-high 30 points, while Milan Jackson added 12 points. Improving to 17-2 overall and 3-1 in district, the Lady Mavs next play at Angleton on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.

    Sharks continue historic gridiron run – The Shadow Creek Sharks continued their historic run on the gridiron with a come-from-behind 25-21 triumph over Foster in the Class 5A Division-1 regional finals on Dec. 8 at the University of Houston’s TDECU Stadium. Moving their record to 13-0, the Sharks have already surpassed the state record for victories by a first-year varsity football program and will now meet San Antonio Wagner Saturday in the state semifinals at NRG Stadium in Houston at 6 p.m. In last week’s game against Foster, Shadow Creek trailed 21-7 midway in the third quarter, but got three rushing touchdowns from senior signal caller Jamarian George. George’s 6-yard keeper was complement by a pair of Shark defensive fourth down stops to complete the comeback.

     

    Sharks’ basketball post win over Angleton – The Shadow Creek Sharks moved their record to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the 24-5A boys’ basketball standings with a 65-45 victory over Angleton Tuesday in Pearland. Shadow Creek fell behind by an early 21-6 count, but went on a 32-5 run in the first and second quarters combined to take command. Tyron Henry led the way with a game-high 20 points, while Ramon Walker added 12 points. The Sharks next play at Rosenberg Terry Friday at 7 p.m.

     

     

    Lady Sharks roll to 63-34 victory – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks rolled to a 63-34 victory at Angleton Tuesday night. R`mani Taylor scored a game-high 20 points to lead the way, while Bre`yon White pumped in 16 points. The Lady Sharks improved to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in 24-5A girls’ basketball play.     Alvin Basketball Boys capture Nederland bronze trophy – The Alvin Yellowjackets split their four games at the Nederland Boys’ Basketball Tournament last weekend to capture the bronze trophy. After suffering pool game defeats to Nederland and Sharpstown, the Jackets rebounded to beat Little Cypress-Mauriceville (59-54) and Bridge City (48-42) to claim bronze bracket honors. Caleb Elsey led the way for Alvin by scoring a combined 42 points in the wins over LCM and Bridge City. The Jackets next play at La Porte on Dec. 11.

     

    Mancha delivers big weekend for Lady Jackets – Senior guard Andrea Mancha delivered a big weekend for the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets during the Lamar Consolidated ISD Tournament with 81 points in four games. Mancha pumped in 25 points against eventual tourney runner-up Westside, while providing 24 points against Klein and 21 points against Wharton. Alvin also played at Pearland Dawson in non-district girls’ hoop action on Tuesday with Mancha scoring 12 points in a 43-31 Lady Jacket defeat. Alvin next hosts Dulles Friday night at 7 p.m.

    Lady Mavs win LCISD Tourney – The Manvel Lady Mavericks captured top honors in the gold bracket by winning the championship at the Lamar Consolidated ISD Tournament last weekend. Manvel posted victories over Aldine (52-30), George Ranch (55-40), Elsik (68-41), Clear Lake (39-33) and Westside (47-39). Manvel also collected a 64-46 win over Shadow Creek Tuesday in 24-5A action in Pearland behind Mckinzie Green’s 31 points and 13 tallies by Deja Williams. Manvel, who improved to 16-1 overall and 2-0 in district play, next meets Hightower on Friday in Missouri City at 7 p.m.

     

    Mavericks take gold bracket at Carlisle-Krueger Hoop Classic – The Manvel Mavericks went a perfect 5-0 last weekend to capture the gold bracket at the Krueger-Carlisle Classic in League City. The Mavs came up with wins over Clements (55-50), Clear Brook (73-51), Memorial (64-52), Clear Lake (64-54) and Summer Creek (74-70). The Mavs then dropped its 24-5A boys’ hoop opener to Shadow Creek Tuesday in Manvel despite a game-high 22 points by Albert McBride. Manvel next plays at Willowridge on Dec. 11.

    Sharks splash into region finals – The Shadow Creek Sharks continued their incredible inaugural season run on the gridiron with a 36-7 triumph over Georgetown in the Class 5A Division-1 Region Football Semifinals on Dec. 1 at Merrill Green Stadium in Bryan. Moving their record to 13-0 for the season, the Sharks now meet Foster in the Region III Finals Saturday at the University of Houston’s TDECU Stadium at 2 p.m. The Sharks pulled away in last week’s contest with Georgetown with 16 unanswered points in the third quarter. Jamarian George threw for 188 yards and four touchdowns, while Marquez Huland added 133 rushing yards. The Sharks’ defense also delivered a big performance, limiting the Eagles to just 138 yards and also without an offensive touchdown.

     

    Sharks’ hoops win league opener – Shadow Creek Sharks boys’ basketball moved its record to 11-4 overall and 1-0 in district play by winning the 24-5A opener on Tuesday in Manvel by a 61-52 count. Shadow Creek trailed 43-42 after three periods, but went on a 19-9 run during the final period. Akin Newton paced the Sharks with 20 points and Tyron Henry added 13 points.     Mavericks’ football season ends with area playoff defeat to Huntsville – The Manvel Mavericks saw their season come to an end with a 34-10 defeat to Huntsville in the Class 5A Division-2 area football playoffs on Nov. 23 at NRG Stadium in Houston. Josh Coltrin threw a nine-yard scoring pass to Roland Kimble and Luis Moreno booted a 33-yard field goal to account for the Mavs’ points in the contest. Manvel closes the season at 9-3 and have advanced to at least the second round of the playoffs for the ninth straight season.

     

    Lady Mavs cruise past Marshall in 24-5A hoop opener – Mckinzie Green pumped in a game-high 29 points and Deja Williams added 12 points to lead the Manvel Lady Mavericks to a 66-38 triumph over Fort Bend Marshall in the 24-5A girls’ basketball opener for both teams Tuesday night at the MHS Competition Gym. Manvel, who ranked fourth in the state in 5A by the Texas Girls Coaches’ Association also moved its record to 10-1 overall. The Lady Mavs next compete at the Clear Creek ISD Tourney this weekend.

    Sharks edge Cedar Park, meet Georgetown in region finals - quarterback Jamarian George fired a go-ahead 31-yard scoring pass to C.J. Guidry with five minutes left in the contest and the Shadow Creek defense provided a late defense stop to lift the Sharks to a 21-14 victory over Cedar Park in the Class 5A Division I area football playoffs on Nov. 23 at Merrill Green Stadium in Bryan. The victory continues the incredible first varsity season for SC, who improved to 12-0 overall. The Sharks will next meet Georgetown in the Division-1 region semifinals on Saturday back at Green Stadium in Bryan at 1 p.m. George also threw a 56-yard TD toss to Ryan Hancock and Marquez Huland scored on a 13-yard rushing TD to account for the Sharks’ other score. Courtney Brown’s interception set up the Huland score on the ground.

     

    Williams named newcomer of the year in 24-5A – Junior outside hitter/setter Alexis Williams was named the newcomer of the year to head the Shadow Creek Lady Sharks’ selections to the All-District 24-5A Volleyball team. Williams was joined on the first team by junior outside hitters Amber Johnson and Halle Sanders and junior middle blocker Arianne Renaud. Honorable mention status went to Grace Soma, Da`Mijah Strange and Kalyn Prothro.

The individuals included Grace Cofelt (Lamar State College, softball); Haley Gaddy (Tennessee Wesleyan, volleyball); Jeffrey Myers (Lamar Community College, baseball); and Travis Phelps (Angelina College, baseball).

     

    Five Lady Jackets named to 24-6A volleyball team – A total of five players from the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets were named to the All-District 24-6A Volleyball team. Senior setter Gabby Hall and sophomore defensive specialist Lindsay Parthum were both selected to the second team, while senior middle blocker Tobi Phillips joined senior libero Haley Gaddy and senior outside hitter Hadlee Morris on the honorable mention list.

     

    Alvin drops boys’ hoop opener – The Alvin Yellowjackets dropped a tough 57-33 decision to Pasadena Memorial on Monday night to open their 2018-2019 boys’ basketball slate. Travis Phelps paced the Jackets with eight points, while Caleb Elsey added seven points and Chris Touch and Brayden Wright scored five points apiece. Alvin next competes at the McDonald’s Texas Invitational in Pasadena this weekend and then hosts Galveston Ball on Nov. 19.

    Mavericks’ football hosts Barbers Hill in bi-district – The Manvel Mavericks will host the Barbers Hill Eagles in a Class 5A Division-2 bi-district football playoff contest Thursday at AISD Freedom Field in Iowa Colony at 7 p.m. The Mavs, who enter the contest with an 8-2 overall record, closed the regular season with a 52-0 home victory over Houston Waltrip on Nov. 9. Quarterbacks Josh Coltrin and Tucker Yarbrough threw for a combined 245 yards and four touchdowns. The Mavs compiled 592 yards of total offense and 17 first downs in the victory. KACC Radio 89.7 FM will carry the game live with the pregame show starting at 6:45 p.m.

     

    Green reaches 2,000-point plateau –Senior guard Mckinzie Green reached the 2,000 point career plateau in scoring with a 29-point performance in the Lady Mavericks’ 78-56 victory over Dulles Tuesday in Sugar Land. Manvel improved to 7-1 for the season. Green also had five steals in the contest, while Deja Williams added 12 points and six steals and Joy Chanslor had 10 points and two steals. Manvel also turned in a second-place showing in the gold bracket of Peggy Whitley Classic last weekend in League City. Green was joined on the all-tourney team with Anessa Dussette and Williams. The Manvel girls next play at Kingwood Park on Nov. 19 at 12:30 p.m.

    Sharks’ football host Porter in bi-district – Fresh off capturing their first undisputed district football crown in their inaugural season, the Shadow Creek Sharks will host Porter in a Class 5A Division I bi-district football playoff game Friday night at AISD Freedom Field in Iowa Colony at 7 p.m. The 10-0 Sharks completed their regular season with a 21-6 victory over Terry on Nov. 10 in Rosenberg.     Mavericks clinch second football seed in 11-5A D2 – The Manvel Mavericks clinched the football runner-up seed in 11-5A D-2 with a 44-point explosion in the second half to defeat Willowridge 51-7 Saturday afternoon at Mercer Stadium in Sugar Land. Manvel (7-2 overall, 6-1 in district) has their regular season finale at home on Friday against Houston Waltrip at 7 p.m. and will then host either Barbers Hill or Santa Fe in the Class 5A D-2 bi-district football playoffs on Nov. 15 at Freedom Field in Iowa Colony at 7 p.m. Hill or Santa Fe would be representing 12-5A as the third seed. In last weekend’s game against Willowridge, the Mavs broke open a 7-7 contest with five touchdowns in the third quarter. The Mavericks’ defense also delivered six quarterback sacks and recovered four fumbles in the second half. Three of the fumbles led to touchdowns for the offense. Josh Coltrin threw TD passes to Eric Hebert (11 yards) and Jalen Paxton (60 yards), while Ladarius Owens (152 yards rushing) also collected a pair of TD’s on the ground.

     

    Lady Mavericks edged by Barbers Hill in five set area volleyball heartbreaker – The Manvel Lady Mavericks watched their season come to a heartbreaking end with a 19-25, 26-24, 25-16, 19-25 and 12-15 defeat to Barbers Hill in the Class 5A area volleyball playoffs on Nov. 2 at La Porte High School. Manvel closes it season at 30-13. Match totals for the Lady Mavs included Ceci Harness with 50 assists and 20 digs for a double double; Morgan Smith with 17 kills and three blocks; Macy Witt-Nobles with 11 kills and three blocks; Aryn Johnson with nine kills and 26 digs and Michaela Kaspar with 18 digs. The Lady Mavs swept Houston Sterling in the bi-district round to advance to area.

     

    Girls’ basketball tops Dawson – Mckinzie Green pumped in a game-high 35 points and Joy Chanslor added 13 points to lead the Manvel Lady Mavericks to a 78-35 triumph in their girls’ basketball home opener over Pearland Dawson in Manvel Tuesday night. Manvel opened the game with a 21-10 first quarter and never looked back. Manvel is 2-0 for the season with the Lady Mavs opening their season on Nov. 2 with a 56-36 win at Pearland. The Lady Mavs next compete at the Peggy Whitley Tourney in League City this weekend.

     Sharks lock up top district football seed – The Shadow Creek Sharks locked up the top gridiron seed in 10-5A D-1 with a 28-12 victory over Hightower on Nov. 2 at Freedom Field in Iowa Colony. The win improved the Sharks’ record to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in district. Shadow Creek plays Terry in their regular season finale Saturday at Traylor Stadium in Rosenberg at 1 p.m. and will then host Porter in the Class 5A D-1 bi-district football playoffs on Nov. 16 at Freedom Field in Iowa Colony at 7 p.m. Porter will be representing 9-5A as the fourth seed. The Sharks broke open a 7-6 halftime contest with back-to-back touchdowns to open the third quarter. Jamarian George fired an 11-yard TD pass to Ashton O’Connor, while the senior signal caller rambled 70 yards on the ground to make it 21-7. George later found Kealon Jackson with a 30-yard TD toss in the fourth quarter. After the Hurricanes closed within 28-12, the SC defense came up with a pair of fourth downs stops to secure the victory.

     

    Girls’ Basketball splits first two games – Lady Sharks’ basketball opened the season by splitting its first two games. Shadow Creek traveled to Missouri City for its Nov. 2 opener with Elkins and came away with a 68-41 victory. Bre`yon White pumped in a game-high 21 points and added 11 points for a double double, while R`mani Taylor and Da`nae Williams delivered 17 points apiece. The Lady Sharks then dropped a 66-58 decision to Clear Springs Tuesday night in Pearland with Taylor’s 24 points leading SC. The Lady Sharks next compete at the Peggy Whitley Classic in League City this weekend.

     

     

    Lady Sharks’ volley season ends in area playoffs – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks had their season come to an end in the Class 5A volleyball playoffs by an 18-25, 8-25 and 15-25 count to Friendswood on Nov. 1 in Pearland. The Lady Sharks close their season at 29-12. Alexis Williams led SC with 10 kills in the match. The Lady Sharks had advanced to the area round by sweeping Houston Austin in bi-district.

    Eovaldi wins World Series with Red Sox –Former Yellowjacket pitcher Nathan Eovaldi became the second Alvin High School graduate last weekend to ever to be on a World Series Championship team. The Boston Red Sox defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games, allowing Eovaldi to accomplish the feat. Hall of famer Nolan Ryan did likewise with the 1969 New York Mets. Eovaldi went 2-1 for Boston during the postseason with a 1.61 ERA and delivered one of the most memorable relief performances in World Series history, throwing a fall classic record 97 pitches in game three. The right-hander’s two postseason wins came over the New York Yankees in the ALDS and the Houston Astros in the ALCS.

     

    Jackets compete in swim meet with Dickinson – The AHS Swim Teams competed in a host dual meet with Dickinson here on Tuesday. Event victories for the Jackets went to Zachary Dickson in the 200 free and 100-yard breaststroke; Zachary Peterson in the 200-yard IM; Daniel Gajic in the 50-yard free; Dane Hoelting in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke; Colby Patterson in the 100-yard free and Trey Shoemake in the 500-yard free. The Lady Jacket victories went to Aria Murdie in the 50-yard free and 100-yard free; Ashley Pierce in the 200-yard free; Victoria Peterson in the 200-yard IM; Leah Nelson in the 200-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke and Olivia Garza in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Lady Mavs moved their record 30-12 for the season and advance to meet Barbers Hill in the area round Friday in La Porte at 5:30 p.m. Match totals for the Lady Mavs included Ceci Harness with 27 assists and five aces; Aryn Johnson with nine kills and six digs; Morgan Smith with eight kills, four aces, four digs and one block; Macy Witt-Nobles with eight kills; Michaela Kaspar with four aces and four digs; Bre Garcia with four digs; and Hailey Turner with two blocks.

     

    Playoff-bound Mavs top Houston Sterling – The football playoff-bound Manvel Mavericks moved a step closer to securing the second seed in 11-5A Division II with a 62-26 victory over Houston Sterling on Oct. 25 at Freedom Field in Iowa Colony. Manvel improved its record to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in district. Ladarius Owens rushed for 144 yards and one touchdown, while Josh Coltrin threw for 177 yards and two scores. Trevion Robertson also returned an interception 22 yards to put Manvel in front for good at 14-7 in the first quarter. The Mavs next play Willowridge Saturday at Hall Stadium in Missouri City at 1 p.m.

    Sharks pull off miracle comeback – The Shadow Creek Sharks rallied from an incredible 27-point deficit to defeat Richmond Foster in a 35-34 thriller on Oct. 26 and also clinched the team’s first ever playoff berth at Freedom Field in Iowa Colony. The Sharks, who are ranked eighth in the state by the Associated Press, moved their record to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in 10-5A Division I. Trailing 34-7 late in the third quarter, Jermaine George scored on a two-yard keeper and then fired a 75-yard TD pass to Marquez Huland to cut the gap to 34-21 with seven minutes left in the contest.  With the score still 34-21 with under two minutes left, George found Axel Cruz for a 38-yard strike to make it a 34-28 contest and after SC recovered the onsides kick, George nailed Jared Jackson from 32 yards out to tie things at 34 with 1:02 remaining. Greg Ezechukwu, who also pulled off the successful onsides kick, then drilled the game-winning extra point through the uprights to give the Sharks the dramatic come-from-behind win. Shadow Creek next hosts Hightower Friday at 7 p.m.

     

     

    Lady Sharks roll to bi-district victory – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks rolled to a 25-4, 25-6 and 25-6 win over Austin in the Class 5A bi-district volleyball playoffs Tuesday at Barnett Field House in Houston. The Lady Sharks improved to 29-11 overall and will next face Friendswood in the area playoffs on Thursday at Pearland High School at 6 p.m. Alexis Williams led the way for SC on Tuesday with 10 kills, 16 assists, eight digs and seven aces, while other match totals for the Lady Sharks included Halle Sanders with 10 kills and Kalyn Prothro with 16 assists.

    Lady Jackets pull off epic comeback in season finale – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets overcame a two-set deficit and rallied past Dickinson in five sets by 21-25, 15-25, 25-19, 27-25 and 17-15 scores Tuesday night at the AHS Competition Gym. Alvin also won on volleyball senior night for the second straight year. Leading the way for the Lady Jackets was senior outside hitter Halee Morris with 15 kills and 30 digs for a double double, while senior setter Gabby Hall did likewise with 48 assists and 15 digs. A pair of Morris kills helped Alvin keep off match points by the Lady Gators in the fifth and deciding set. Senior middle blocker Tobi Phillips also provided big numbers with 16 kills and four blocks, while Lindsay Parthum added 17 digs and four aces. Other match totals included Hannah Webster with eight kills and three blocks, Marrik Hooker with six kills and Nichol Williams with five kills.

    Lady Jackets’ bi-district match – The Manvel Lady Mavericks will compete in the Class 5A bi-district volleyball playoffs on Oct. 30 at Barnett Field House in Houston at 5 p.m. against an undetermined opponent from 23-5A. Manvel enters the playoffs with a 29-12 overall record after securing the second postseason seed in 24-5A. The Lady Mavs completed the regular season with a 25-20, 25-22 and 25-14 home triumph over Hightower Tuesday night. Match totals included Aryn Johnson with 12 kills and 10 digs for a double double, Macy Witt-Nobles with eight kills and three blocks, Morgan Smith with seven kills and Ceci Harness with 29 assists. Johnson also recently broke the Manvel single season record for kills in a season with her 380th kill last week.

    Sharks edge Friendswood– The Shadow Creek Sharks survived their closest call of the 2018 football season to date by edging past Friendswood 27-19 on the road on Oct. 19. Shadow Creek improved to 7-0 overall and with their fourth 10-5A Division I victory in as many games, Brad Butler’s team also moved into sole possession of first place in the district. Kyron Drones threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Kealon Jackson for the Sharks’ first score in the contest, while Marquez Huland (161 yards rushing) busted loose for a 75-yard scoring dash. Jermaine George also threw TD passes to Jared Jackson (29 yards) and Carlton Guidry (56 yards) in the contest. The SC defense secured the victory with a late stop on downs in the final period. The Sharks next host Foster Friday night at Freedom Field in Iowa Colony at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Sharks tune up for playoffs – The Shadow Creek Sharks tuned up for next week’s Class 5A bi-district volleyball playoffs by sweeping Willowridge by 25-7, 25-6 and 25-11 scores in Missouri City on Tuesday.     Eovaldi throws ALCS gem against Astros – Former Alvin Yellowjacket hurler Nathan Eovaldi continues to shine in the postseason with the 2008 Alvin grad picking up the win on the mound in Boston’s 8-2 victory over Houston Tuesday night in game three of the American League Championship Series at Minute Maid Park. Eovaldi worked six innings, allowing just two runs, six hits and two walks, while striking out four. Eovaldi also improved his postseason record to 2-0 (2.08 ERA), tying him with hall of famer Nolan Ryan for the most hometown MLB playoff wins in Alvin history.

     

    Lady Jackets edged by Springs – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets suffered a 17-25, 16-25 and 17-25 defeat to Clear Springs at home Tuesday night. Gabby Hall delivered 25 assists and Lindsay Parthum added 14 digs, while other match totals for the Lady Jackets included Marik Hooker with eight kills, Hadlee Morris with five kills and 10 digs, Tobi Phillips with five kills and Tara Lauersdorf and Hannah Webster with four kills apiece.     Mavs gain victory over Milby – The Manvel Mavericks improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the 11-5A Division II football standings with 77-0 victory over Milby on Oct. 12 at Barnett Stadium in Houston. Josh Coltrin threw touchdown passes to Justin Valenzuela (20 yards), Eric Hebert (31 yards) and Roland Kimble (10 yards), while the Maverick special teams and defense combined for four TD’s. Kamryn Alexander (41 yards) and Jude Mayon (51 yards) both posted scoring dashes on punt returns, while Hebert exploded for a 92-yard kickoff return. Trevion Robertson got the defense TD for Manvel by picking up a loose fumble and rambling 25 yards to the end zone. The Mavs have an open date in their schedule this week and next play at home against Houston Sterling on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.

     

     

    Lady Mavs fall out of first despite trio’s double doubles – The playoff-bound Manvel Lady Mavericks fell out of a first-place tie in the 24-5A volleyball standings with Richmond Foster with a 27-25, 22-25, 19-25 and 22-25 four-set defeat to the Lady Falcons Tuesday in Manvel despite double double performances from Aryn Johnson, Ceci Harness and Morgan Smith. Johnson provided 14 kills and 11 digs, while Harness added 41 assists and 19 digs and Smith chipped in 15 kills and 10 digs. Macy Witt-Nobles also had eight kills in the contest for Manvel, who next plays at Fort Bend Marshall Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Mavs have one more regular season match remaining with Hightower at home on Oct. 23, before competing in the Class 5A playoffs the week of Oct. 29.

The Sharks improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the 10-5A Division I football standings. Quarterback Jermaine George threw three touchdown passes to Jared Jackson (6, 13 and 61 yards), while Kealon Jackson busted loose for a 68-yard punt return for his second special teams’ TD of the season. Marquez Huland also rambled for a 48-yard scoring dash, while Jay`Veon Bell (13 yards) and Isaiah Harper (37 yards) chipped in rushing TD’s as well.     Eovaldi picks up postseason victory – Alvin grad Nathan Eovaldi shined in his postseason debut, picking up the victory on the mound in the Boston Red Sox’s 16-1 romp over New York in game three of the ALDS Oct. 8 at Yankee Stadium. Eovaldi surrendered only one run and five hits in seven innings of work, while striking out five. Clocked at 99 miles or higher on several pitches, Eovaldi threw a total of 97 pitches in the game. Boston won the series by a 3-1 margin to advance to the American League Championship series against the Houston Astros. Eovaldi could possibly get the start against Astros in game three or four (Tuesday or Wednesday) at Minute Maid Park.

     

    Morris gets double double for Lady Jackets – Senior Hadlee Morris delivered a double double performance with 18 kills and 11 digs in the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets’ tough 25-21, 15-25, 13-25 and 16-25 defeat to Clear Creek Tuesday night at home. Senior Gabby Hall also provided 32 assists, five digs and two kills, while sophomore Lindsay Parthum added 19 kills and senior Rhi Navarro had 10 digs. Sophomore Marrik Hooker chipped in seven kills and senior Tobi Phillips had six kills. The Lady Jackets next play Clear Falls on Friday in League City at 6 p.m.

Morgan Smith led the way with a match-high 14 kills, four aces and three blocks, while Macy Witt Nobles delivered 10 kills and six solo blocks and Ceci Harness dished out 35 assists and four aces. Hailey Turner also reached double figures with 10 digs in the match. The Lady Mavs next play at Lamar Consolidated Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Manvel improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the District 11-5A Division II standings. Quarterback Josh Coltrin completed 11 of 15 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns. Justin Venazuela and Jude Mayon grabbed scoring passes of 68 and 30 yards, respectively. Xavier Carter also returned an interception 80 yards for a defensive TD.     Sharks blank Texas City – The Shadow Creek Sharks captured a 59-0 victory at Texas City on Oct. 5 to improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the District 10-5A Division I football standings. Quarterback Jamarian George completed 10 of 13 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns, while Carlton Guidry grabbed four receptions for 93 yards and one TD. Marquez Huland chipped in a 63-yard scoring run and Ashton O’Connor had a 56-yard scoring reception. The SC defense also scored twice in the contest on Jassiyah Alvarez’s 29-yard fumble and a 45-yard interception return by Xavion Alford. The Sharks next host Galveston Ball Friday at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Sharks stun league leading Foster – The playoff-bound Shadow Creek Lady Sharks pulled off a 25-19, 25-19 and 25-18 straight set upset of league-leading Richmond Foster in 24-5A volleyball action Tuesday night in Pearland. Creek improved to 25-11 overall and 10-3 in the district standings. The Lady Sharks were paced by Alexis Williams, who delivered a spectacular triple double performance with 13 kills, 19 digs and 11 assists to complement four blocks and three aces. Halle Sanders added 21 digs, eight kills and two blocks and Arianne Renaud chipped in 10 kills and six blocks. Da`Mijah Strange also had a big night with 19 digs.     Horsfall named AAC defensive player of the week – Former Alvin Lady Yellowjacket volleyball standout Taylor Horsfall was named the American Athletic Conference’s defensive player of the week, the league announced Oct. 1. The POW accolade was Horsfall’s fourth in her collegiate career. The Tulsa University junior defensive specialist/libero compiled 66 digs in the Golden Hurricane’s two matches last weekend. The 39 digs against North Texas matched her second best total ever and ranks only the team record 44 digs Horsfall set last year against UFC. Taylor also ranks fourth nationally among NCAA setters in digs per set, averaging an impressive 5.92 mark.

     

    Olszewski earns special teams collegiate honor – Gunner Olszewski, a senior defensive back at Bemidji State University, collected Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference special teams’ player of the week honors for his performance in the Beavers’ 27-10 victory over Wayne State last weekend. Olszewski compiled 118-combined yardage on kickoff and punt returns. The former Alvin Yellowjacket also moved into second place all time at BSU in punt return yardage and currently ranks third in the nation with 25.1 yards per punt return.

    Mavs blank Northside – The Manvel Mavericks rolled to a 69-0 victory over Houston Northside on Sept. 28 at Cowart Stadium in Houston. The win improved the Mavs’ record to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the 11-5A Division II football standings. Quarterback Josh Coltrin threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns, while reserve signal caller Tucker Yarbrough passed for another touchdown. Eric Hebert and Jalen Paxton both caught a pair of TD tosses. Garrison Johnson also busted loose for a 52-yard scoring run, while Ladarius Owens chipped in three scores on the ground. Yarbrough and Jalen Walthall added rushing TD’s as well.     SC upsets state ranked Angleton – The Shadow Creek Sharks pulled off a 35-14 upset of No. 9 state ranked Angleton in their 10-5A Division I opener on Sept. 28 at AISD Freedom Field in Iowa Colony. Improving to 4-0 overall, the Sharks scored on their first possessions and never looked back. Quarterback Jamarian George completed 11 of 18 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns, while Kealon Jackson grabbed six receptions for 162 yards and two TD’s. Axel Cruz also added a receiving touchdown for Shadow Creek, while Kyron Drones chipped in a score on the ground. The Sharks’ limited the Wildcats’ vaunted Wing T rushing attack to only 131 yards. The Sharks next play at Texas City Friday night at 7 p.m.

    Johnson & Owens break 100-yard barrier – Manvel Maverick running backs Garrison Johnson and Ladarius Owens both went over the 100-yard rushing barrier in the Mavs’ 52-51 overtime heartbreaking loss to Fort Bend Marshall at Freedom Field last weekend. Johnson rambled for 127 yards and four touchdowns, while Owens collected 123 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Josh Coltrin also threw for 210 yards and touchdowns to Jude Mayon and Eric Hebert. With a 2-2 overall record and 1-1 mark in District 11-5A Division II, Manvel next faces Northside Friday at Cowart Stadium in Houston.

     

    Lady Mavs win in four sets – The playoff bound Manvel Mavericks moved a step closer to at least locking up the runner-up seed in the District 24-5A volleyball standings with a 25-18, 25-21, 18-25 and 25-17 four-set triumph over Shadow Creek Tuesday night in Pearland. Aryn Johnson delivered a double double for Manvel (23-11 overall, 8-1 in district) with 18 kills and 12 digs, while Morgan Smith and Macy Witt-Nobles hammered 11 kills apiece. Ceci Harness also dished out 43 assists and Michaela Kaspar chipped in 18 digs. The Lady Mavs next host Willowridge Friday at 6:30 p.m.

    Lady Sharks remain in third despite defeat – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks remained in the running for a volleyball playoff spot in District 24-5A despite a 18-25, 21-25, 25-18 and 17-25 defeat to Manvel Tuesday in Pearland. Shadow Creek holds a 21-11 overall record and is currently third in 24-5A with a 6-3 mark. Halle Sanders led the Lady Sharks on Tuesday with 12 kills, while Alexis Williams had nine kills and 15 assists. Other double figure totals for SC included Kayln Prothro with 13 assists, Da`Maijah Strange with 16 digs and Amber Johnson with 15 digs. The Lady Sharks next play at Angleton Friday at 6:30 p.m.

    Enriquez scores TD for Alvin in Tompkins’ game – Running back Isreal Enriquez rambled for a 63-yard touchdown run in the Alvin Yellowjackets’ defeat against Katy Tompkins last weekend. Gage Garcia also joined Julio Montoya and James Smith with fumble recoveries. The Jackets next face Mayde Creek in Katy on Saturday at 6 p.m., before receiving a bye in their schedule for next weekend.

     

    Morris has big match in Lady Jackets’ loss to Clear Falls – Senior outside hitter Hadlee Morris hammered a match-high 12 kills in the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets’ 17-25, 14-25 and 10-25 home defeat to Clear Falls in 24-6A volleyball action Tuesday night. Angelina Farias added four kills and Hannah Webster chipped in three kills. Senior setter Gabby Hall also had a good match on Sept. 14 at Clear Creek with 18 assists and four digs, while Morris provided seven kills and Haley Gaddy added seven digs. The Lady Jackets next play Clear Springs Friday in League City at 7 p.m.

    Alexander shines in Mavs’ victory – Kamryn Alexander exploded 84 yards on the opening kickoff and added a 56-yard punt return during a 42-first quarter, as the Manvel Mavericks cruised to a 68-0 triumph over Sharpstown in the 11-5A Division II opener on Sept. 14 in Houston. Ladarius Owens also scored both on special teams with a 24-yard blocked punt return and a one-yard run, while Donovan Eaglin scored twice on short touchdown runs and Josh Coltrin hit Jalen Paxton and Roland Kimble with TD passes. With a 2-1 overall record, the Mavs next host Fort Bend Marshall Friday in Rosharon at 7 p.m. The game will be carried live by KACC 89.7 FM.

     

    Trio leads Lady Mavericks – Macy Witt-Nobles combined with Morgan Smith and Aryn Johnson for 30 kills and Ceci Harness delivered 31 assists and seven aces to lead the Manvel Lady Mavericks to a 25-10, 25-17 and 25-11 sweep over Fort Bend Marshall in 24-5A volleyball action Tuesday night at home. Manvel moved its record to 6-1 in district play with the victory. Michaela Kaspar added six digs in the match, while Taylor Doan and Johnson contributed five apiece. The Lady Mavericks next meet Fort Bend Hightower on Friday in Missouri City at 6:30 p.m.

    Sharks remain unbeaten with dominating win – The Shadow Creek Sharks jumped out to a three touchdown lead after one quarter and never looked back in a 60-0 victory over Elsik Sept. 14 at Crump Stadium in Alief. Shadow Creek remained unbeaten with the win, improving to 3-0 for the season. Wesley Shippy delivered a 16-yard scoring run for the Sharks in the opening period, while quarterback Jamarian George found Kealon Jackson (38 yards) and Greg Hancock (14 yards) with TD passes. George completed 10 of 11 passes in the contest for 197 yards and three TD’s with Carlton Guidry also hauling a 40-yard scoring reception. Courtney Brown also scored on special teams with a five-yard blocked return and Damian Jackson returned a Elsik fumble five yards for a defensive score. The Sharks have an open date in their schedule this weekend and next open 10-5A Division 1 play at home with Angleton on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.

    Jackets edged by Kempner – The Alvin Yellowjackets suffered a 39-35 defeat to Kempner Sept. 6 in Sugar Land. Running back James Smith rushed for 139 yards and four touchdowns and also grabbed a 72-yard scoring reception from quarterback Wyatt Fields. Alvin held a 35-32 lead until the Cougars scored the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter. The Jackets next host Katy Tompkins Friday at AISD Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. Radio KACC 89.7 FM will carry the game live. This will be the first meeting ever between Alvin and Tompkins on the gridiron.

     

    Lady Jackets defeated by Lake in 24-6A VB opener – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets came up on the short end of a 25-18, 25-17 and 25-17 three set decision to Clear Lake in the District 24-6A volleyball opener for both teams Tuesday night in Alvin. Alvin watched its record fall to 13-9 overall with the defeat. Senior setter Gabby Hall delivered a double double for the Lady Jackets with 20 assists and 11 digs, while other match totals included Hadlee Morris with nine kills, Tobi Phillips with six kills and Haley Gaddy with 12 digs. The Lady Jackets next play Clear Creek Friday in League City at 6 p.m.

    Mavs outlasted by Crosby in heart breaker – The Manvel Mavericks watched their record fall to 1-1 on the gridiron with a 49-47 setback to hosting Crosby in area high school football action Sept. 7. The Cougars scored the game winning touchdown on the game’s final play. Ladarius Owens delivered a big performance with 309 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, while Garrison Johnson rambled for 192 yards and five touchdowns. The loss was Manvel’s first in non district play since 2015. The Mavs next open District 11-5A Division I play Friday with Sharpstown in Houston at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Mavericks cruise to sweep –Tuning up for their first place showdown at Richmond Foster, the Manvel Lady Mavericks cruised to a 25-22, 25-15 and 25-15 sweep over Lamar Consolidated Tuesday night at home. Manvel moved its record to 20-10 overall and 5-0 in 24-5A with the victory. Manvel sophomore Aryn Johnson led all hitters with 13 kills, while Morgan Smith slammed 10 shots to the floor. Cecilia Harness also dished out 32 assists and two aces, while Johnson added eight kills and two aces. Other match totals for Manvel featured Michaela Kaspar with nine digs and Macy Witt Nobles with eight kills. Manvel next plays Foster at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The teams are tied for the top spot in 24-5A.

    Sharks pull away for win at Magnolia – The Shadow Creek Sharks rolled to a 49-27 victory at Magnolia on Sept. 7 to improve to 2-0 for the high school football season. Marquez Huland rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns to become the first Sharks’ running back to ever rush for over 100 yards. Jamarian George threw for 334 yards and three TD’s with the scoring receptions going to Carlton Guidry (55 yards), Axel Cruz (47 yards) and Ashton O’Connor (70 yards). George added a 29-yard rushing touchdown, as well. Kaymen St. Junious also returned a fumble 27 yards for a SC defensive TD and Ronald Nunnery went 90 yards with a blocked PAT. The Sharks next play Elsik Friday at Crump Stadium in Alief at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Sharks collect win over Marshall – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks improved to 19-10 overall and 4-2 in 24-5A volleyball play with a 25-4, 25-8 and 25-6 triumph over Fort Bend Marshall Tuesday in Pearland. Junior outside hitter Alexis Williams turned in a double double with 10 kills, 10 assists and eight digs, while junior outside hitter Halle Sanders chipped in nine kills and four aces. The Lady Sharks next play Hightower Friday in Missouri City at 6:30 p.m.

    Jackets fall 22-7 to Stratford in football opener – The Alvin Yellowjackets suffered 22-7 defeat to Stratford in its 2018 football opener Aug. 31 at AISD Memorial Stadium. Yellowjackets’ QB Wyatt Fields fired a 14-yard scoring strike to Walker Conn in the second quarter and the Alvin defense held the Spartans to just 13 total yards and no first downs during the first half. However, the Spartans scored on their first two possessions of the third quarter and added an insurance TD late in the contest. Alvin next plays Kempner Thursday night at Mercer Stadium in Sugar Land at 6:30 p.m. The game will be carried by KACC 89.7 FM radio with Bill Lewis providing the play-by-play duties.

     

    Lady Jackets defeat La Porte – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets collected a straight set sweep over La Porte on the road Tuesday night behind senior outside hitter’s Hadlee Morris’ 21 kills. Alvin improved to 12-7 with the victory. The Lady Jackets were coming off a 25-23, 25-22 and 25-20 home victory over North Shore on Aug. 31 and a sixth place finish at the Santa Fe Labor Day Classic on Saturday. In the win over North Shore, statistical leaders included Tobi Phillips with 11 kills, Gabby Hall with 29 assists, Haley Gaddy with 18 digs and Lindsay Parthum with 10 digs.     Mavs roll in Hall’s debut – Josh Coltrin passed for 212 yards and three touchdowns and the Manvel defense held Clear Lake to only 124 total yards in its 42-6 opening season triumph over Clear Lake Aug. 30 at Freedom Field. The game was the first ever played at the AISD’s new football facility in Rosharon and also Manvel’s first win under new head coach Kevin Hall. Coltrin hit Justin Valenzuela, Ladarius Owens and Eric Hebert with touchdown passes, while the senior QB also scored twice on the ground and Garrison Johnson chipped in a rushing TD. Johnson added 112 yards on the ground on 12 carries, as well. The Mavericks next play at Crosby Friday at 7 p.m. The game will be carried by KACC 89.7 FM with Bill Lewis providing the play-by-play chores.

     

    Lady Mavericks dominate Angleton – The Manvel Lady Mavericks remained unbeaten in District 24-5A volleyball play with a 25-10, 25-5 and 25-11 sweep over Angleton Tuesday night at home. The Lady Mavs improved to 18-10 overall and 3-0 in district with the victory. Junior middle blocker Morgan Smith hammered a match high 16 kills and sophomore outside hitter Aryn Johnson was close behind with 15 kills, while junior setter Cecilia Harness dished out 33 assists. Senior outside hitter Michaela Kaspar also reached double figures with 12 digs. Manvel finished second in the consolation bracket at the CCISD Tournament last weekend as well. The Lady Mavs next play at Rosenberg Terry Friday at 6:30 p.m.

    Sharks shine in varsity football debut – The Shadow Creek Sharks made their varsity debut in the football ranks a memorable one, collecting a 43-7 victory over Summer Creek Aug. 31 at Freedom Field in Rosharon. The Sharks broke open a close 7-7 game with 22 unanswered points in the second quarter. QB Jamarian George completed 16 of 25 passes for 170 yards to Jahkin Middleton, while Kealon Jackson exploded 65 yards with a punt return for another score. Kyron Drones and Isaiah Harper chipped in rushing TD’s, as well. Shadow Creek next plays at Magnolia Friday at 7 p.m.

     

    Lady Sharks sweep Lamar Consolidated – Junior outside hitter Alexis Williams delivered a double double with 13 kills and 12 assists, while junior outside hitter Halle Sanders hammered 11 kills without committing an error to lead the Shadow Creek Lady Sharks to a 25-20, 25-14 and 25-13 triumph over Lamar Consolidated in 24-5A volleyball action Tuesday in Pearland. Junior outside hitter Amber Johnson added nine kills and 14 digs and senior setter Kalyn Prothro chipped in 17 assists and seven aces. Shadow Creek also finished fifth at the Santa Fe Labor Day Classic last weekend with Williams and junior Arianne Renaud both gaining all-tourney honors.     Lady Jackets sweep Lutheran South Academy – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets captured a 25-17, 25-19 and 25-15 volleyball victory over Lutheran South Academy here Tuesday. The win improves the Lady Jackets’ record to 7-5 for the season. Tobi Phillips led the way with 10 kills, four blocks and three aces, while senior setter Gabby Hall provided 23 assists and Hadlee Morris chipped in nine kills. Haley Gaddy and Abby Kincaide also contributed 13 digs apiece. The Lady Jackets also outlasted Elkins by 16-25, 25-13, 24-26, 25-23 and 17-15 scores Aug. 24 in Missouri City. Morris and Phillips hammered 14 kills apiece, while Hall dished out 39 assists and three aces.     Lady Sharks collect first district win – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks rebounded from their first district defeat a week earlier and swept Angleton in straight sets by 25-9, 25-13 and 25-8 scores Tuesday in Pearland. Shadow Creek improved to 1-1 in District 24-5A play with the victory. Grace Soma and Halle Sanders provided key kills in the first game to get SC off a 7-1 lead. Jaydah Gulley also provided a solo block at the net at game point. Amber Johnson delivered a kill in the second game to spark a 6-0 run and the Lady Sharks never looked back. SC next plays at Rosenberg Terry Friday at 6:30 p.m. and concludes play at the Santa Fe Tourney Saturday.

    Lady Jackets sweep Pasadena – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets captured a 25-17, 25-12 and 25-12 volleyball sweep over Pasadena High Tuesday in Pasadena. Senior middle blocker Tobi Phillips hammered 11 kills and senior outside hitter Hadlee Morris drilled six aces to help the Lady Jackets even their record at 5-5. Alvin also finished seventh at the Dickinson Gator Classic last weekend with Phillips blasting 14 kills in the win over Nederland and Morris delivering 11 spikes in the victory over Brazoswood. The Lady Jackets next play Elkins Friday in Missouri City at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Caldwell receives preseason honors – Yellowjackets’ senior defensive back Marques Caldwell received a pair of preseason football honors this week. The Texas signee was named to both the Houston Touchdown Club and the Houston Chronicle’s All-Greater Houston Area Preseason Football teams. Caldwell led the Jackets with a pair of interceptions in 2017 and also provided 27 tackles. Alvin opens the 2017 season at home on Aug. 31 with Stratford at 7 p.m.

    Lady Mavericks open new volleyball district with victory – The Manvel Lady Mavericks opened play in their new volleyball district of 24-5A with a 25-18, 25-16 and 25-18 victory over Shadow Creek Tuesday night. Senior setter Cecilia Harness led the way with 31 assists and 10 digs for a double double, while senior middle blocker/right-side hitter Macy Witt-Nobles also provided a double double with 10 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Aryn Johnson delivered a match-high 16 kills, as well. The Lady Mavs were coming off a fourth place finish at the Dickinson Gator Classic the previous weekend with Harness receiving all-tournament honors. Manvel next plays at Willowridge Aug. 28 at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Roberson, Robinson honored – Manvel Mavericks’ senior defensive lineman Kori Roberson and junior offensive lineman Layden Robinson were both named to All-Greater Houston area preseason football squads this week. Roberson was selected to both the Houston Touchdown Club and the Houston Chronicle’s All-Greater Houston Area Preseason Football teams, while Robinson was also picked by the Chronicle on offense. The Mavericks open the 2018 season at the AISD’s new football facility, Freedom Field, against Clear Lake Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.

Junior outside hitter Halle Sanders paced Shadow Creek with seven kills and junior middle blocker Arianne Renaud added six kills.     Garcia to receive lifetime achievement award – Former Alvin High School Swim Coach Lenny Garcia will receive a lifetime achievement award honor from the Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association next month in Austin. Garcia, who worked 32 years for AISD, before retiring in 2013, will receive the award Sept. 15 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel with the luncheon getting under at noon. Garcia had several swimmers advance to regional and state competition for AHS and his water polo teams (boys & girls) competed at the state tournament a combined six times. Tom Landgraf (Clear Lake) and Sven Schultz (Clear Brook) will also receive LTA awards at the event.

Hadlee Morris paced the Lady Jackets with 12 kills and Tobie Phillips added 11 kills, while Gabby Hall delivered 33 assists and 10 digs for a double double. Other Alvin players in double figures included Abby Kincaide with 15 digs and Haley Gaddy with 11 digs. Alvin then suffered a 12-25, 18-25, 25-23 and 21-25 defeat to Manvel here Tuesday. Morris reached double figure kills again with 13, while Hall provided 22 assists and eight digs. Lindsay Parthum chipped in 10 digs as well.     Lady Mavericks getting off to good start – The Manvel Lady Mavericks have opened the season with seven victories in their first 10 matches. The Lady Mavs went 5-3 at the Adidas John Turner Volleyball Classic last weekend in Pearland, posting wins over Clear Lake (25-20, 25-20), Nederland (25-14, 25-15), Glenn (25-14, 25-21), Trinity Christian Academy (25-19, 25-20) and Argyle (26-28, 25-20, 25-16). Manvel then edged Alvin by 25-12, 18-25, 25-23 and 25-21 scores Tuesday in Alvin. Aryn Johnson led all hitters with 16 kills and 10 digs for a double double, while Cecilia Harness also delivered a double double with 45 assists and 14 digs. Other Manvel players in double figures included Macy Witt-Nobles with 13 kills, Morgan Smith with 11 kills, Taylor Doan with 18 digs and Michaela Kaspar with 14 digs. The Lady Jackets overcame a 11-4 deficit in the third game and never looked back. Tobi Phillips led the way for Alvin with 10 kills, while setter Gabby Hall dished out 25 assists. Hadlee Morris and Angelina Farias added seven kills each and Abby Kincaide belted six aces. Rhi Navarro also delivered eight digs, while Kincaide and Haley Gaddy chipped in seven digs each. Junior setter Cecilia Harness dished out a match-high 25 assists, while senior middle blocker Macy Witt-Nobles hammered 11 kills and sophomore outside hitter Aryn Johnson added seven kills. Johnson and senior outside hitter Michaela Kaspar chipped in 11 digs apiece. Returning players for head coach Susan Kennedy include Harness, Witt-Nobles and Johnson. Harness was also named to the Greater Houston Volleyball Coaches Association’s preseason players to watch list for this season. Manvel has advanced to the regional semifinals during the last two years. The Lady Mavericks next compete at the John Turner Invitational this weekend in Pearland.

    Lady Sharks top Goose Creek Memorial in opener – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks opened their 2018 volleyball season with a 25-18, 25-16, 24-26 and 25-17 four-set victory at Goose Creek Memorial Tuesday night. Junior outside hitter Amber Johnson and junior outside hitter/middle blocker Arianne Renaud were both named to the Greater Houston Volleyball Coaches Association’s preseason players to watch list for this season. The Lady Sharks have advanced to the area playoffs during the last two seasons. Shadow Creek next hosts Channelview Friday at 6:30 p.m.
