    Rocha named co-defensive player of the year in 23-6A – Senior Joy Rocha was named the co-defensive player of the year to highlight the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets’ picks to the All-District 23-6A Girls’ Soccer team. Rocha, who received all-state honors from TGCA recently, was joined on the first team by Alvin teammates Madeleine Geiman, Ellison Overby and Anna Wilson. Lady Jackets named to the second team included Victoria Coronado, Camila Guzman and Akacia Robles, while honorable mention status went to Mia Johanson and Yaremy Rojano. Alvin also received six player selections to the All-District 23-6A Boys’ Soccer team, starting with Alexis Sanchez’s first team nod. Second team picks went to Fermin Hernandez and Trevor Singleton and honorable mention status included Orlando Moraga, Erik Rivera and Dylan Verano.

    Williams makes gold medal shot put toss at state – Manvel Maverick Alex Williams captured a gold medal in the Class 6A mens’ shot put at the state track and field meet, May 13 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Williams heaved the shot put 56 feet and 3.5 inches to become the first Maverick to ever win a throwing event at state. Williams also finished sixth in the discus a little later.

    Lady Sharks strike gold twice in state relays  – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks delivered a pair of gold medal performances in relays and finished second overall at the Class 6A State Track and Field meet, May 14 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas at Austin campus. The Lady Sharks’ foursome of Amaya Kennison-Jenkins, Mackenzie Jenkins, Sydney Bryant and Nia Parks completed the 4X200 race in 1 minute and 35.14 seconds to top Arlington Bowie’s silver 1:35.89 total. The foursome of Collins, Kennison-Jenkins, Madyson Thurmond and Parks then captured the 4X400  in 3 minutes and 41.89 seconds. Shadow Creek also medaled in three races on the mens’ side and placed fourth overall. Isaac Henderson captured the silver medal in the 100 meters for the Sharks at 10.31 seconds and Tyriq Brunn did likewise in the 200 meter dash at 21.60. Jayvion Henderson also teamed with Brunn, Michael Strange and Henderson for the bronze and a school record in the mens’ 4X100 relay at 40.28 seconds.

     

    Soliz named co-defensive player of the year for bi-district finalists – Mercedes Soliz was named co-defensive player of the year to highlight the bi-district finalist Shadow Creek Lady Sharks’ 12 player selections to the All-District 23-6A Girls’ Soccer team. Soliz was joined on the first team by SC teammates Hannah Johnson, Grace Laase, Summer Smith and Keiko Yesland. Second team nods went to Evie Green, Dani Reyes, Vera Sanchez and Paula Walker, while honorable mention status included Hannah Kemp, Abby Onstad and Kalyn Luong.  The Lady Sharks went 16-6-1 overall and 8-3-1 in district play. Shadow Creek also had five players named to the 23-6A Boys’ Soccer team. Lorenzo Osorio-Ortiz and Owen Onstad were both named to the second team, while honorable mention status included Luis Acevado, Harsh Patel and Ethan Wiltz.

    Congrats to the Alvin HS Lady Jackets Softball team for their Bi-District  victory over Clear Creek HS!  The Lady Jackets will face Deer Park HS in the Area round of the State Playoffs!  The teams will be playing a Best-of-Three Series and the entire series will be played at Manvel HS!  The first game will be played on Friday, 5/6/22 with the gates opening at 5:30 p.m and the game starting at 6:30 p.m.   The second game will be played on Saturday, 5/7/22 with the gates opening at 3:00 p.m. and the game starting at 4:00 p.m.  The third game, if necessary will be played 30 minutes after the completion of the second game.     Lady Jackets complete bi-district softball series sweep – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets completed a Class 6A Bi-District Softball series with Clear Creek by defeating the Lady Wildcats in game two by a 14-10 count, April 29 in Alvin. Alvin had opened the series with a 16-9 triumph, April 28 in League City. The Lady Jackets improved to 23-11 with the victory and move on to play No. 1 ranked Deer Park in the best-of-three area playoff series this weekend in Manvel. Game one will be played Friday at 6:30 p.m., while game two will be played Saturday at 4 p.m. A third game, if necessary, follows 30 minutes after the second game. In the second game win over Clear Creek, Lady Jacket highlights included a three-run homer by Victoria Valdez and Izzy Farmer’s go-ahead two-run single to give Alvin the lead for good in the sixth inning.

     

    Alvin Baseball meets Clear Falls in bi-district one game playoff – After finishing the regular season as the No. 3 seed in 23-6A, the Alvin Yellowjackets open the Class 6A Bi-District Baseball playoffs by traveling to Baytown Lee, Friday for a one-game playoff with Clear Falls at 6 p.m. Falls finished as the runner-up seed from 24-6A. The Jackets take a 21-8 overall record into the contest after blanking Alief Taylor by a 14-0 count, April 29 in Alvin.

     

    Rocha named to TGGA’s All-State Soccer team – Alvin Lady Yellowjackets’ defender Joy Rocha was among 50 players named to the Texas Girls Coaches’ Association’s Class 6A All-State Soccer team. Rocha, a senior, played all four years on the Lady Jackets’ varsity squad. Rocha was also recognized for her work in the classroom and joined Alvin teammates Duncan Mckailey, Geiman Madeleine, Chloe McLeod and Anna Wilson on the TGCA’s Class 6A All-State  Academic Soccer teams’ list.

     

    Manvel Maverick Report

     

    Mavericks compete at regional track and field meet – The Manvel Mavericks competed at the Region III-5A Track and Field meet last weekend in Humble with several individuals punching their ticket to the state meet in Austin. Alex Williams heaved a meet best 56 feet and 10.75 inches to win the mens’ shot put, while collecting runner-up honors in the discus toss at 174 feet and 7 inches. The Lady Mavericks also won the 4X400 womens’ relay with Jasmyn Johnson, Kayla Smith, Kymia Woodard and Jasir Miller combining for a 3:52..8 time, complementing runner-up finishes by Miller, Smith, Johnson and Kennedy Shorter in the 4X100 and Miller, Woodard, Jasmine Pharms and Shorter in the 4X200 relay. The state track and field meet for 5A will be held May 13-14 Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas at Austin campus.

    Sharks compete at regional track and field meet  – The Shadow Creek Sharks competed at the Region III-6A Track and Field meet last weekend in Humble with several individuals punching their ticket to the state meet in Austin. Isaac Henderson collected a state-qualifying berth by winning the mens’ 100-yard dash at 10.36 seconds, while the Sharks’ foursome of Jayvion Anderson, Tyriq Brunn, Michael Strange and Henderson raced to victory in the 4X100 meter relay. The Lady Sharks’ foursome of Amaya Kennison-Jenkins, Mackenzie Collins, Aleia Peters and Sydney Bryant also won the 4X200 relay and Collins combined with Kennison-Jenkins, Madyson Thurmond and Nia Parks to win the womens’ 4X400 relay. Brunn earned another state qualifying spot on the mens’ side as well with a second place in the 200 meters. The 6A state track and field meet will be held May 13-14 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas at Austin campus.

     

    Sharks meet Wildcats in bi-district series – Fresh off winning their seeding playoff against Dawson, the Shadow Creek Sharks compete in the Class 6A Bi-District Baseball playoffs this weekend, meeting Clear Creek in the best-of-three series, starting Friday. Game one will be played Friday at Shadow Creek HS at 6 p.m., while game two will be played Saturday at Clear Creek HS at noon. A third game, if necessary, follows 30 minutes after the second game. The Sharks swept their regular season finale series with Alief Hastings and then edged Dawson by a 10-8 count, Saturday in Manvel to earn the fourth and final playoff spot from 23-6A.

    Williams tosses one-hitter – Sophomore Cooper Williams tossed a one-hitter and struck out 14, as the Alvin Yellowjackets’ rode the southpaw ace’s arm to a 2-1 victory over Strake Jesuit in 23-6A Baseball action, Tuesday at Nolan Ryan Field. Alvin moved its record to 19-7 overall and 8-3 in district with the victory. Easton Winfield led the Jackets on offense with a 2-for-3 evening, which featured the Jackets’ outfield both driving in a run and scoring a run. Third baseman Grant Davis also robbed a Strake Jesuit batter of a hit in the sixth inning by making a spectacular backhanded spear of a line drive and throwing over to shortstop Tanner Marek for an inning ending double play. The Jackets next play Strake Jesuit, Friday in Houston at 6 p.m.

     

    Lady Jackets top Dawson – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets captured an 11-1 victory over Dawson in 23-6A Softball action, April 14 in Alvin. Victoria Valdez and Reagan Jones both drove in three runs for the playoff bound Lady Jackets, who improved to 19-11 overall and 8-3 in district. Valdez also joined Izzy Farmer and Abby Ptak with three hits apiece and Matti Matthews picked up the win in the circle. The Lady Jackets next host Alief Taylor, Friday at 6:45 p.m. to close the regular season.

    Lady Mavericks receive 10 all-district soccer picks – The Regional Quarterfinalist Manvel Lady Mavericks received a total of 10 selections to the All-District 22-5A Girls’ Soccer team. Hillary Griffin joined Drew Phillips and Caitlin Roach on the first team and Chelsea Cross was named the district’s newcomer of the year. Second team nods went to Sidney Blackmar, Isabella Hernandez and Landry Wisnoski, while honorable mention status included Kenadi Lodree, Allison McClanahan and Ava McFadden. Lady Mavs making the all-academic list included Cross, Addisen Gardner, Bailey Gardner, Mya Haynes, Hernandez, Lizbeth Lira, McClanahan, Phillips, Roach, Rachell Sanow and Andrea Solorzano. The Lady Mavs competed in the third round of the playoffs for the second straight year, going 14-10-1 overall and posting playoff triumphs over Port Neches-Groves and Kempner.

    Sharks capture 11-6 win over Elsik – The Shadow Creek Sharks captured a 11-6 victory at Alief Elsik in 23-6A Baseball action on April 14. Shadow Creek improved to 12-9 overall and 6-4 in district with the victory. Tyson Kestner belted out three hits, followed by Charles Broussard and Juan Guzman with two apiece. Guzman also drove in a pair of runs, followed by Julian Jimenez and Broussard with one each. The Sharks next host Pearland, Friday at 6 p.m.

    Yellowjackets top Dawson – The Alvin Yellowjackets top Dawson by a 6-2 count in 23-6A Baseball play, Tuesday night in Pearland. Alvin moved its record to 18-6 overall and 7-2 in district with the victory. Cooper Williams picked up the win on the mound, striking out 11 in six innings of work. Grant Davis finished up the game on the mound for the Jackets in the seventh. Tanner Marek drove in three runs, two of which came on a sixth inning double, which broke a 2-2 tie. R.J. Jarvis and Nate Berg also drove in runs for Alvin, who hosts Dawson, Thursday at 6 p.m.

    Lady Mavericks’ Softball edges GCM – The Manvel Lady Mavericks captured a 3-1 victory over Goose Creek Memorial in 22-5A Softball action, Monday in Manvel. The Lady Mavs improved to 12-10 overall and 8-5 in district with the win. Ella Kerlin drove in the first run for Manvel with a second-inning sacrifice fly, while Hannah Comeaux’s RBI put the Lady Mavs in front for good in the sixth and Haley Ratcliff stole home plate for an insurance tally. Ryley Nihart picked up the win in the pitching circle for Manvel, who next plays at La Porte, Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Mavericks roll past Galveston Ball – The Manvel Mavericks rolled past Galveston Ball by a 10-4 score on the Island, April 9 in 22-5A Baseball action. Juan Pablo Suarez drove in a pair of runs, while Sam Simmons joined Cristian Lara, Chase Cross, Kyle Janacek and Dylan Martinez with one RBI apiece. Konnar Williams picked up the win on the mound, allowing just five hits and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings of work. The Mavs next play at La Porte, Thursday at 7 p.m.

    Lewis belts slam in Sharks’ victory – Dejuan Lewis belted a grand slam and pitchers Peyton Cook, Braeden Riley and Tyson Kestner combined for the program’s first ever no-hitter in a 16-0 win over Alief Elsik, Tuesday in 23-6A Baseball action in Pearland. Shadow Creek improved to 11-9 overall and 5-4 in district with the win. Kestner also homered in the contest for the Sharks, who played at Elsik, Thursday night at 6 p.m.

     

    Lady Sharks explode for big first inning – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks exploded for six runs in the first inning and went on to capture a 10-3 win over Alvin in 23-6A Softball action, Tuesday in Pearland. The Lady Sharks improved to 14-6-1 overall and 6-3 in district play with the victory. Holly Vollman drove in four runs in the contest to lead the SC offense and Leila Heredia earned the pitching win in the circle, going the distance. Infielders Kiersten Salinas and Jillian Gutierrez also made outstanding diving catches in the field to keep Shadow Creek in front. The Lady Sharks next play at Alief Elsik, Thursday at 6:45 p.m.

    Former Lady Jacket wins national collegiate lift title – Former Alvin Lady Yellowjacket powerlifter Karina Macias captured the 2022 USAPL Collegiate 90 Kg National Championship crown for Sam Houston State University, March 29 in Illinois. Her championship lifts were as follows: Squat (205 Kg), Bench (80 Kg), Deadlift (190 Kg) and total (475 Kg). Macias graduated from Alvin High School in 2020.

    Marshall named to TGCA’s All-State hoop team  – The postseason honors keep coming in for Jordyn Marshall, as the Manvel Lady Mavericks’ senior point guard was named to the Texas Girls Coaches’ Association’s Class 5A All-State Basketball team. Marshall guided the Lady Mavs to the regional semifinals, which was the deepest postseason run in the Houston area this season. Other postseason accolades for Marshall this season include being named the most valuable player in 22-5A and joining teammate Mercedes Mancha on the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Association’s All-Region 3 girls’ team.

    Cook tosses three-hit shutout – Peyton Cook tossed a three-hit shutout to pave the way for the Shadow Creek Sharks’ 4-0 victory over the Alvin Yellowjackets in 23-6A Baseball action, Tuesday night at Nolan Ryan Field. Cook has pitched the Sharks to wins over both Alvin and Dawson in district play. RBI’s in the game for Shadow Creek (10-8 overall, 4-3 in district) went to Julian Jimenez, Blaine Brown and Charles Jarrell. The Sharks next host Alvin, Friday at 6 p.m.

     

    Lady Sharks rally for win over Dawson – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Pearland Dawson in a 3-2 thriller in 23-6A Softball action, Tuesday at Shadow Creek High School. Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Jillian Gutierrez tied the contest at 2-2 with an RBI single to center field and advanced all the way to third base on a throwing error by the Dawson outfield. Sydney Boudreaux then delivered a game-winning single by the Lady Eagles’ infield to score Gutierrez. Shadow Creek improved to 13-6-1 overall and 5-3 in district with the victory.

    Grant homers twice in Jackets’ win – Third baseman Grant Davis smacked a pair of home runs and drove in four RBI’s to lead the way for the Alvin Yellowjackets’ 11-1 victory at Alief Hastings in 23-6A Baseball action, Tuesday night. Kobe Frausto also drove in a pair of runs with a homer and Cooper Williams went 2-for-3 with an RBI as well. Anthony Graham combined with Jacob Amerson and Juan Cantu on a one-hitter. Alvin moved its record to 4-1 in district and 15-5 overall. The Jackets next host the Bears, Friday at Nolan Ryan Field at 6 p.m.

     

    Lady Yellowjackets roll to victory at Taylor – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets rolled to a 16-0 victory at Alief Taylor, Tuesday night in 23-6A Softball action. Alvin improved to 16-9 overall and 5-1 1 in district with the victory. Roni Harrison belted a three-run homer and drove in five RBI’s during a 12-run first inning. Victoria Valdez and Kamryn Deleon also contributed two-run doubles. Alvin is currently in a three way tie for first place with Pearland and Dawson in the league standings. The Lady Jackets next host Elsik, Friday at 6:45 p.m.

    Lady Maverick’ Soccer edges Kempner in area playoffs  – The Manvel Lady Mavericks edged Kempner by a 2-0 count in the Class 5A Area Girls’ Soccer Playoffs, Tuesday at AISD Freedom Field. Moving their record to 14-9-1 overall, the Lady Mavs advance to the regional quarterfinals for the second straight year, which is a program best. Manvel next hosts Friendswood in the regional quarterfinals, Thursday at AISD Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. Keying Tuesday’s win over Kempner for Manvel was goals by Chelsea Cross on a penalty kick and Caitlin Roach in the second half. Allison McClanahan also assisted with a corner kick on Roach’s goal. Sidney Blackmar also delivered a shutout at keeper for the Lady Mavs.

     

    Mavericks’ Baseball picks up first district win – The Manvel Mavericks picked up their first district win on March 26, topping Baytown Lee by a 5-2 count on the road. Konnor Williams drove in a pair of runs, while Stephen Lewis and Byron Robinson chipped in a pair of hits. The Mavs next play at Baytown Sterling, Friday at 6 p.m.

    Sharks’ hoops earn postseason honors by TABC – Cameron Amboree was named to the Class 6A All-State Boys’ Basketball team by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches to highlight the Sharks’ postseason honors by the organization. Amboree joined teammate Shawn Jones on the All-Region III boys’ team, while a pair of Lady Sharks, R’mani Taylor and Brooklyn Brown, earned All-Region III nods on the girls’ side. The SC boys advanced to the regional finals for the second time in school history and the Lady Sharks competed in the regional quarterfinals.

    Yellowjackets rally from six run deficit– The Alvin Yellowjackets pulled off a dramatic rally with an eight-run fifth inning to edge Pearland, 8-7 in 23-6A Baseball action, Tuesday at Nolan Ryan Field. The Jackets improved to 14-4 overall and 3-0 in district. Alvin entered the bottom of the fifth inning trailing 6-0, but rallied to tie on Cobe Frausto’s bases loaded walk and then took the lead on Reid Parrish’s two-run single to right center field. Cooper Williams picked up the win on the mound and Grant Davis earned a save in relief, coaxing a double play grounder to close the game out. The Jackets next play at Pearland, Friday at 4 p.m.

     

    Bailey heads Yellowjackets’ hoop all-district hoop picks – Kendrick Bailey was named to the first team to head the Alvin Yellowjackets’ seven player selections to the All-District 23-6A Boys’ Basketball team. Khalil Pestaina earned a second team nod, while honorable mention went to Damon Gilford, Israel Llamas, Anthony Gonzalez, Garrett Granger and Elijah Harris.

    Lady Mavericks roll to win at Baytown Lee  – The Manvel Lady Mavericks rolled to a 8-1 victory over Baytown Lee in 22-5A Softball action on Tuesday. Ryley Nihart picked up the win in the circle and also reached the 200th career strikeout mark. The Lady Mavericks exploded for a big six-run third inning, which featured RBI’s from Hannah Comeaux (bases loaded walk), Jaylie Miller (single) and Katie Bishop (single). Improving to 5-3 in district, Manvel next hosts Santa Fe, March 29 at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Mavericks receive three all-district hoop selections– The Manvel Mavericks received a total of three player selections to the All-District 22-5A Boys’ Basketball team. Junior Jamari McDowell was named to the first team, while Ruben Doria and Fred Weary Jr. were both selected to the second team. Manvel earned the second playoff seed from 22-5A, going 19-15 overall and 12-4 in district play.

    Sharks’ Baseball tops Dawson– The Shadow Creek Sharks topped Pearland Dawson by a 5-1 count on the road, Wednesday at Dawson High School. Shadow Creek improved to 9-5 overall and 3-0 in the 23-6A Baseball standings. Peyton Cook fired a three hit complete game and Donte Lewis drove in a pair of runs to lead the way offensively. The Sharks next host Dawson, Friday at 6 p.m.

     

    Amboree named MVP in 23-6A – Cam Amboree was named the most valuable player in 23-6A to head the regional finalist Shadow Creek Sharks’ seven player selections to the all-district boys’ basketball team. Amboree was joined on the first team by Shawn Jones and Chase Cain, while David President was named the coach of the year and Bryce Jackson was tabbed as the league’s top newcomer. The trio of Michael Collins, Lucious Jackson and Kaden Tate earned second team nods. Going 29-4 overall, the 23-6A co champion Sharks posted playoff victories over Clear Springs (64-55), Summer Creek (61-47), Dickinson (53-47) and Bellaire (73-42).

    Yellowjackets open AISD Tourney with win – The Alvin Yellowjackets opened the Alvin ISD Baseball Tournament with a 4-2 victory over Elkins, Thursday at Nolan Ryan Field. Grant Davis picked up the win on the mound, while Tanner Marek drove in a pair of runs and Easton Winfield belted a solo homer. Cooper Williams also drove in a run in the contest. The Jackets wrap up play in the tourney this weekend and then open 23-6A play, March 16 with Elsik at 6 p.m. in Alief.

     

    Lady Yellowjackets cruise to win – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets cruised to a 19-0 win at Alief Hastings in 23-6A Softball action, Wednesday evening. Alvin improved to 14-8 overall and 3-0 in district with the victory. Victoria Valdez led the way with a pair of homers and seven RBI’s while Roni Harrison and Reagan Jones also went deep. Matti Matthews also drove in a pair of runs with an RBI double and Allie Armstrong earned the win in the pitching circle. The Lady Jackets next host Shadow Creek, Friday at 6:45 p.m.

    Lady Mavericks roll to win at Ball High  – The Manvel Lady Mavericks rolled to a 10-0 triumph at Galveston Ball in 22-5A Softball action, Wednesday night. Ryley Nihart tossed a two-hitter with seven strikeouts in the circle and Samantha Carder belted an inside the park homer to get the Lady Mavs (7-6 overall, 3-1 in district) on the board in the first inning. Carder joined Allix Carder, Jaylie Miller and Megan Vineyard with two RBI’s, while Ivaney Ramirez had three hits at the plate, as well. The Lady Mavs next play at Goose Creek Memorial, Friday at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Maverick Baseball edged by Santa Fe in extra inning – The Manvel Mavericks suffered a narrow 4-3 eight-inning defeat to Santa Fe in the 22-5A Baseball opener for both teams, Wednesday in Manvel. Sam Simmons pitched seven strong innings on the mound and also led the Manvel bats with three hits and two RBI’s. Byron Robinson also drove in a run for the Mavs, who next play at Texas City, Friday at 6 p.m.

     

    Shadow Creek Shark Report

     

    Shadow Creek hoops’ season ends in regional finals – The Shadow Creek Sharks saw their banner season come to an end at the Region III-6A Boys’ Basketball Finals last weekend in Cypress. The Sharks, who were making their second trip to the regional finals in school history, opened the tourney by cruising past Bellaire, 73-42 in the semifinals on March 4. Shawn Jones pumped in 16 points, eight rebounds and eight blocked shots, while Cam Amboree delivered a game-high 19 points. The Sharks then advanced to the title game on March 5, where they were tied with Atascocita at 31 apiece at intermission. However Atascocita pulled away in the second half with a 17-2 run in the third quarter and ultimately punched their state ticket to San Antonio with a 67-49 ticket. Shadow Creek closed out their season at 29-4 overall.

    ALVIN Powerlifting Girls win fourth straight region title – The Alvin High School Powerlifting girls captured their fourth straight region title with the regional meet being hosted this week in Alvin. Leading the way for the Lady Jackets was Hannah Casas with a first place in the 123-pound division, Lexi Rodriguez with a second place in the 114 pound division, Kaylyn Tucker with a third place in the 97 pound division, Sage Barmettler with a fifth place in the 132 division and Layla Palomarez with a fifth place in the 123 division.

     

    Yellowjackets top Katy in baseball home opener – The Alvin Yellowjackets rode the right arm of Cooper Williams’ 10 strikeouts and a six-run rally in the fifth inning to top Katy, 7-2 in their home baseball opener, Monday at Nolan Ryan Field. Nate Berg and Connor Keithley both scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2, while R.J. Jarvis followed with a go-ahead sacrifice fly. Williams then belted an opposite field two-run double and Easton Winfield added another RBI double. The Jackets next compete at the Barbers Hill Tournament this weekend.

Reagan Jones increased the margin to 4-0 in the third with a three-run homer to left field and Isabelle Farmer also plated a pair of tallies in the frame with a sacrifice fly.     Maverick Baseball drops contest to Summer Creek – The Manvel Mavericks dropped a 11-7 non-district decision at Summer Creek on Tuesday. The Mavs next compete at the Cy Falls Tournament this weekend and then host Santa Fe, March 8 to open 22-5A Baseball play.

    Shadow Creek hoops earn second region tourney berth in school history – The Shadow Creek Sharks’ Varsity Basketball squad came up a with a big fourth quarter to pull away from Dickinson by a 53-47 count in the regional quarterfinals, Tuesday at Delmar Field House in House. The victory punched the Sharks’ second ever ticket to the Region III-6A Boys’ Tournament at the Berry Center in Cypress. Shadow Creek (28-3) meets Bellaire in the Friday semifinals at 6 p.m. with the winner meeting either Atascocita or Clements in the finals, Saturday at 2 p.m. Keying the win over Dickinson was Cam Amboree with 19 points, 13 of which came in the final period and Shawn Jones with 16 points, eight rebounds and eight blocked shots. Jones also swished a 50-foot plus shot at the second quarter buzzer to give the Sharks a 26-15 lead at intermission.

    Baseball rallies for win in opener – The Alvin Yellowjackets rallied for a wild 15-14 victory in their season opener over Clear Springs, Monday in League City. The game was also Anthony Scalise’s Alvin head coaching debut. Grant Davis belted a home run in the contest and also pitched a scoreless seventh inning to secure the victory after the Jackets scored their three go-ahead runs in the frame’s top half. Tanner Marek joined Davis with four RBI’s apiece and Boston Lee also hit a home run in the game. The Jackets next host games for the Pearland ISD/Alvin Tourney this weekend. Alvin Softball rolls to district opening victory – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets rolled to a 19-0 district opening victory over Elsik, Tuesday in Alief. The win improved Alvin’s record to 5-3 overall. Victoria Valdez belted a two-run triple to get the Lady Jackets on the board in the first inning, while Chloe Foster followed with a run-scoring double. Kamryn DeLeon and Valdez later had back-to-back RBI doubles in the frame. The Lady Jackets next host games for the Haynie Spirit Tourney this weekend. Peterson named to TSWA’s all-state football team – Alvin Yellowjackets’ junior Dayshawn Peterson was recently named to the Texas Sportswriters Association’s Class 6A All-State Football Second team at fullback. Peterson rushed for 1,150 yards, 12 touchdowns and helped lead Alvin to its most victories since 2017.

    Lady Mavericks edge Foster in Region hoop quarterfinals – The Manvel Lady Mavericks punched their ticket to the Region III-5A Girls’ Basketball Tournament this weekend with a narrow 33-31 triumph over Foster, Tuesday at George Ranch HS. The victory improved the Manvel Girls to 35-3 overall and sets them up for a regional semifinal meeting with College Station Friday at the Aldine Campbell Center at 6 p.m. A win would send the Lady Mavs into Saturday’s 2 p.m. regional final against either Beaumont United or Pflugerville Hendrickson. Manvel has already posted playoff victories over Crosby and Angleton as well. The Manvel Boys saw their season come to a close with a 56-47 defeat in the 5A Boys’ Bi-District Basketball playoffs to Nederland, Tuesday despite a game-high 27 points for Jamari McDowell. Manvel Baseball edges Shadow Creek in opener – The Manvel Mavericks collected a hard earned 6-4 triumph over Shadow Creek in the 2022 Baseball opener for both AISD programs, Tuesday in Manvel. JP Suarez drove in both Byron Robinson and Chase Cross with a two-run single in the second inning, while Christian Lara delivered an RBI single in the fourth. RBI’s from Robinson and Lara later helped break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning.

    Shark hoop teams compete In playoffs – The Shadow Creek Shark Basketball teams each competed in 6A playoff action this week. The Shadow Creek Boys rallied for a 64-55 victory over Clear Springs in the bi-district playoffs, Monday with a 30-16 run in the fourth quarter. Shawn Jones pumped in 24 points and nine rebounds, while Cam Amboree also scored 24 points and hit 13 straight free throws to seal the first round win in the final period. The Lady Sharks saw their banner season come to an end with a 55-45 defeat to Summer Creek in the Region III-6A quarterfinals on Tuesday. Shadow Creek led 11-9 after one period, but Summer Creek went on a 17-2 run in the second quarter to take the upper hand for good. The Lady Sharks were coming off a dramatic 43-38 come-from-behind win over Dobie in the area round last week where they rallied from a 22-1 start from Dobie and a 14-point halftime deficit. The Lady Sharks also defeated Clear Creek in the opening round.

    Guthrie named to Padilla Poll all-state team – Alvin High School linebacker Gavin Guthrie was named to the Padilla Poll’s Class 6A Football All-State Second team. The 6-2 195-pound, who has committed verbally to Henderson State University helped the Yellowjackets win its most games in four games, amassing 110 tackles, 10 tackles for losses, eight quarterback hurries, four sacks, five forced fumbles, three pass breakups and one interception.

     

    Lady Yellowjackets pick up first district victory – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets picked up their first victory in 23-6A basketball play this week, topping Alief Elsik by a 55-35 count, Wednesday in Alvin. Every player scored in the contest for Alvin with Katy Barajas’ 17 points leading the way. Maddy Kincaide added nine points and Emily Garza chipped in eight points for the Lady Jackets, who next play at Pearland, Saturday at 11 a.m.

     

    AHS Soccer teams win and tie in league openers – The AHS Soccer teams picked up a win and a tie in their respective 23-6A openers with Alief Elsik on Tuesday. The Lady Yellowjackets captured a 6-1 triumph at Alvin ISD Memorial Stadium on Tuesday. Chloe McLeod and Natasa Vranic drilled a pair of goals in the contest, while Anna Wilson and Maddie Geiman delivered one goal apiece.     Honore named to All-Greater Houston Football team  – Senior Maverick punter Brook Honore was named to the All-Greater Houston Football team to highlight the five selections by the 5A region semifinalists. Running back De`Monte Seymore and offensive Tevin Shaw were both second team selections on offense, while linebacker Justin Medlock and kick returner Collin Wright made the second team cuts on defense. Honore was also named to the SB Live.com All- East Texas First team at punter.

     

    Maverick hoops sweep Galveston – Both first place Manvel Maverick hoop squads captured victories in 22-5A play on Tuesday. The state ranked Lady Mavericks claimed a 78-11 decision over Ball in Manvel behind Mercedes Mancha’s 14 points and 10 points each by Ryann Drummer and Allyson Ferguson. Moving their record to 29-2 overall and 12-0 in district, the Lady Mavs next play at Goose Creek Memorial, Friday at 7 p.m. The Mavericks also came up victorious over Ball, posting a 60-47 triumph in Galveston. Reuben Doria paced the Mavs (16-12 overall, 9-2) with 20 points and Jamori McDowell added 19 points for Manvel, who next hosts Goose Creek Memorial, Friday at 7 p.m.

      

    Lady Mavs’ Soccer blanks Galveston – The Manvel Lady Mavericks improved to 2-1 in 22-5A girls’ soccer play with a 2-0 victory over hosting Galveston Ball, Tuesday night. Chelsea Cross and Drew Phillips scored the two Manvel goals with Caitlin Roach assisting on both goals. The Lady Mavs next host Goose Creek Memorial, Friday at 7:30 p.m.

    Shadow Creek hoops sweep Taylor – The Shadow Creek Sharks’ Varsity Basketball teams each came up with victories, Wednesday in 23-6A play. The SC boys topped Taylor by a 69-39 count in Pearland behind Cam Amboree’s 18 points and 12 points by Chase Garcia. The Sharks (20-2 overall, 8-0) next pay Dawson, Saturday on the road in Pearland at 1 p.m. The Lady Sharks rolled to a 43-28 triumph at Taylor with Brooklyn Brown pumping in 13 points and R`mani Taylor adding 12 points.     Sharks receive postseason football honors – The postseason football honors kept rolling for the 6A area finalist Sharks. Defensive back Dejuan Lewis was second team defensive selection to the All-Greater Houston Football and also a first team pick to both Vype Magazine and SB Live.com’s All-East Team squad. Defensive back Nick Hudson and defensive lineman Jayden Madkins were both honorable mention picks on the Vype team, as well.

    Alaniz, Sanchez gain all-tourney honors – Alvin High School Varsity Soccer players Marcos Alaniz and Alexis Sanchez both earned all-tournament honors for their performance at the Baytown Tournament last weekend. Sanchez also scored a pair of goals and Carlos Bonilla pierced the net as well in the Jackets’ 3-1 victory over Clear Brook Tuesday in Friendswood.     AHS lifers shine in host meet – Both Alvin High School powerlifters delivered strong performances in their host meet on Jan 8 with the Lady Jackets gaining first place honors and the AHS boys finishing second in their division. The Meet highlights included Anthony Garcia with a best lightweight squat; Eddie Parker with best heavyweight bench press; Hannah Casas with best lightweight overall lifter, squat, bench and deadlift and Eliana Hernandez with best heavyweight lifter, squat and bench.

The state ranked Sharks were led by Shawn Jones’ 19 points and 16 points by Cam Amboree. Jones also pulled down eight rebounds and Amboree added five assists and four rebounds.     Yellowjackets drop 57-40 decision at Pearland – The Alvin Yellowjackets dropped a 57-40 decision to Pearland in 23-6A Boys’ Basketball action, Tuesday in Pearland. The Alvin boys hold a 14-7 overall record and are now 1-1 in district play. Kendrick Bailey led the Jackets with 19 points and three assists on Tuesday, while Damon Gilford added 14 points.     Manvel Basketball teams cruise by Friendswood  – The Manvel Varsity Basketball teams both picked up victories over Friendswood in 22-5A play on Tuesday. The state ranked Lady Mavericks captured a 62-27 decision over the Lady Mustangs in Friendswood to move their record to 24-2 overall and 7-0 in district. The Manvel girls are currently ranked third in the state by the Texas Girls Coaches’ Association’s Class 5A poll, while holding the No. 5 spot in the 5A Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ poll. The Lady Mavs next play at Baytown Lee, Friday at 7 p.m. The Manvel boys also remained in a tie with Goose Creek Memorial atop the 22-5A boys’ standings with a 55-43 victory over Friendswood in Manvel. The Mavs (12-10 overall, 5-1) next host Baytown Lee, Friday at 7 p.m.

     

    Former Lady Maverick honored by Louisiana Sportswriters – Former Manvel Lady Maverick volleyball standout Aryn Johnson, a freshman at McNeese, was named to the Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association’s All-Louisiana Volleyball Second team. Johnson led the Cowgirls and ranked third in the Southland Conference with 331 kills and 33 service aces. Johnson also ranked third on the team with 204 digs and delivered a career high 18 digs against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The honor is the third for Johnson, who was also selected to the All-Southland Second team and to the SLC’s All-Tournament team.

    Shadow Creek hoops roll by Dawson – The state ranked Shadow Creek Sharks Basketball squads both rolled to 23-6A victories over Pearland Dawson on Tuesday. The Sharks moved their record to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in district play with a 60-42 triumph, Tuesday at the Shark Tank Gymnasium behind Shawn Jones’ game-high 20 points and 17 points by Cam Amboree. Shadow Creek erased an early 9-2 Dawson lead with a 25-0 run between the first and second quarters combined. The Sharks, who next play at Strake Jesuit, Friday at 7 p.m., are ranked 19th in the state in the TABC’s 6A boys’ poll. The Lady Sharks also picked up a 56-28 victory over Dawson on the road to move to 19-2 overall and 3-0 in district behind R`mani Taylor’s 15 points. The Shadow Creek girls are ranked sixth in the state by the TABC’s 6A girls’ poll and 11th in the TGCA poll. The Lady Sharks next host Alief Taylor, Saturday at 1 p.m.

    Alvin Grad Garza named new head football coach at Iowa Colony – Raymond Garza, a 2001 Alvin High School graduate, was named the new head football coach at Iowa Colony High School during the AISD’s regular board meeting, Tuesday night in Iowa Colony. Garza, 38, played for current AISD athletic director Mike Bass and position coach Kirk Martin at Alvin. The Texas A&M and Lamar University graduate also served as an assistant coach to both Martin at Manvel HS and Brad Butler at Shadow Creek HS. The Sharks won the 2019 Class 5A Division I State Title. The Iowa Colony Pioneers will compete in Class 4A Division I next fall.

    Lady Mavericks named to all area and all state volleyball teams – Junior outside hitter Devyn Lewis and senior middle blocker Mary Kate Preston were both named to the Houston Chronicle’s All-Greater Houston Area Volleyball team, while freshman setter Kenedy Massie received newcomer of the year honors. Lewis and junior outside hitter Lyric Jordan were also both named to the Texas Girls Coaches’ Association Class 5A All-State team. Manvel advanced to the Class 5A state tournament for the first time in school history, going 37-12 overall.

      

    Manvel Basketball teams roll by Galveston  – The Manvel Varsity Basketball teams both remained unblemished in 22-5A team with victories over Galveston Ball, Tuesday. The Mavericks rolled to a 50-30 home triumph over the Tors behind Fred Weary’s 14 points and 12 points by TJ Grate. Improving to 10-9 overall and 3-0 in district, the Mavs next play at Goose Creek Memorial, Friday at 7 p.m. The state ranked Manvel girls (21-2 overall) also remained perfect in 22-5A with a 76-9 win at Ball.     State ranked Lady Sharks edge Pearland in 23-6A opener – The state ranked Shadow Creek Lady Sharks opened 23-6A girls’ hoop play by edging Pearland, 40-30 at home, Tuesday night. Leading the way for the 16-2 Lady Sharks was Brooklyn Brown and Ace Edmond with 10 points apiece. Brown also collected five rebounds, two assists and a steal in the contest and Edmond added three rebounds, five assists and three steals.     Alvin Football earns nine all-state academic selections – The Alvin Yellowjackets received a total of nine player selections to the Texas High School Coaches Association’s Class 6A All-State Academic Football team. Cade Bingham joined Elijah Harris and John Hoffman on the second team, while honorable mention nods went to Gavin Guthrie, Marshall Garcia, Charlie Fox, Trevor Singleton, Zach Hammond and Gage Johnson.

     

    Yellowjackets’ Basketball captures tourney title at Nederland – The Alvin Yellowjackets captured the tournament title last weekend with a 4-0 performance at the Leroy Miksch Memorial Basketball Tourney in Nederland with guard Kendrick Bailey also earning all-tourney MVP honors. Alvin (10-4) posted wins over Spring Woods (58-56), Beeville Jones (65-53), Kempner (65-45) and Willowridge (71-52). The victory over Spring Woods came in double overtime, while the win over Willowridge came in the tourney championship. Bailey then pumped in 36 points in the Jackets’ 78-52 triumph at Sam Houston Math Science and Tech on Dec. 6. Alvin next plays at Katy Morton Ranch, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m.

    Lady Mavericks win LCISD Tourney crown – The state ranked Manvel Lady Mavericks delivered a 5-0 performance at the Lamar Consolidated ISD Tournament last weekend with Jordyn Marshall and Mercedes Mancha both being named to the all-tourney team. The 19-2 Lady Mavs posted wins over Cy Park (56-30), Elsik (68-22), George Ranch (46-39), Tomball Memorial (66-35) and Fort Bend Austin (51-39) in the gold bracket title contest. The Lady Mavs also moved their record to 2-0 in 22-5A play with a 79-12 home victory over Texas City, Dec. 7. Marshall and Aiyana Sam both pumped in 12 points to lead the way. The Lady Mavs next play at Baytown Sterling, Friday at 7 p.m. The Manvel boys also improved to 2-0 in district play with a 41-38 triumph at Texas City, Dec. 7.     Manvel Volleyball honored by TGCA  – The state semifinalist Manvel Lady Mavericks were honored this week by the Texas Girls Coaches Association with junior outside hitter Devyn Lewis being named to both the TGCA’s Class 5A All-State Volleyball team and 5A/6A All-Star team. Lewis was joined on the all-state squad by Lady Mavs’ junior outside hitter Lyric Jordan. The Lady Mavs went an impressive 37-12 overall and advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history.

    Sharks’ Football honored both in classroom and on field – The 23-5A Football Champion Shadow Creek Sharks were honored for both their performance on the field and their work in the classroom – Matthew Allison and Nicholas Hudson were both honorable mention picks for the Texas High School Coaches Association’s Class 6A All-State Academic team, while 19 players were named to the All-23-6A Football team. Quarterback Duke Butler was named the offensive player of the year, while safety Dejuan Lewis collected the defensive POY hardware. End Zion Taylor was tabbed as the league’s newcomer of the year and Shadow Creek also got the coaching staff of the year nod. Other first team offensive picks went to tackle Zach Rymer, guard Dylan Hughes, center Meyson Colbert, tight end Caleb Washington, tailback Tylik Burton and receivers Lawrence Armstrong and Jo`Qwan West. Tackle Jayden Madkins joined Robert Luddington and Hudson on the first team defense for SC.     Alvin Football earns 13 all-district picks – The Alvin Yellowjackets received a total of 13 player selections to the All-District 23-6A Football Team. Center Sebastian Cisneros and offensive tackle Finn Madding joined running back Dayshawn Peterson as first team offensive picks, while outside linebacker Gavin Guthrie was named to the first team defense. The Jackets next compete at the Needville Tournament this weekend. In girls’ hoop action, the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets fell 73-41 to Houston Memorial at home, Tuesday.     Mavericks’ Football season ends in regional semifinals – The Manvel Mavericks saw their season come to an end in the Class 5A Division I Regional Semifinals with a 31-21 defeat to Hightower in Missouri City, Nov. 25. The Mavs finish their season at 10-3 with the 10-5A tri-champion and second place playoff seed topping Beaumont United (56-0) and Pflugerville Weis (41-31) in postseason play. De`Monte Seymour ripped off 381 yards and four TD’s in the area round win over Weis. In the regional semifinal affair against Hightower, quarterback Kaeden Smith scored on a pair of touchdowns on keepers and Ty Harris also delivered a scoring run.

     

    Mavericks Basketball sweeps Santa Fe  – The Manvel High School Varsity Basketball squads both posted District 22-5A opening wins over Santa Fe, Tuesday night. Manvel rolled to a 75-56 boys’ home victory over the Indians behind 15 points apiece by AB Freeman and Jamori McDowell and 14 points by AJ Freeman. The Lady Mavericks improved to 13-2 overall with a 66-29 triumph at Santa Fe. Leading the way for the Manvel girls was Chadaria Tingle with 15 points, Mercedes Mancha with 14 points and Jordyn Marshall with 13 points. High scorers for the Jackets included Kendrick Allen with 19 points, four rebounds and three steals, Damon Gilford with 14 points and four rebounds and Garrett Granger with 14 points. The win also improved the Jackets’ record to 2-0 for the season. Alvin opened with a 78-69 road victory at Pasadena Memorial last weekend.     Lady Jacket Volleyball receives six all-district picks – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets received six player selections to the All-District 23-6A Volleyball team. Outside hitter Ana Garza and middle blocker Addison Hansen both earned first team nods, while Wylie Singleton and Korrigan Wright gained second team berths and honorable mention status went to Janey Anderson and Mackenzie Strban. Alvin finished as the district’s fourth playoff seed and was a bi-district finalist.

    Lady Mavericks advance to state volleyball tournament – The Manvel Lady Mavericks pulled off a dramatic comeback to overcome three match points by College Station in the fourth set and rallied for a 15-25, 25-20, 21-25, 27-25 and 15-12 five-set triumph over the Lady Cougars in the Region III-5A Volleyball Championship match, Nov. 13 at Delmar Field House in Houston. The victory was also for the 22nd straight for the 37-11 Lady Mavs, who will be making their first ever appearance at the state tourney in Garland. Manvel will play Lucas Lovejoy in the Class 5A State Semifinals, Friday at the Curtis Culwell Center at 11 a.m. The winner of that match will go on to play either New Braunsfel Canyon or Grapevine in the state finals, Saturday at 3 p.m. Manvel advanced to the regional title affair by defeating Plugerville Henrickson in four sets by 20-25, 26-24, 27-25 and 25-15 scores in the region semifinals, Nov. 12 and then rallied from a 24-21 fourth game deficit against College Station the next day to force a fifth and deciding game. Mary Kate Preston led the way with 12 kills and 14  blocks, while Kenedy Massie dished out 40 assists and 12 digs and Devyn Lewis provided 12 kills and 16 digs. Lyric Jordan also had a big match with 17 kills and seven blocks.

      

    Mavericks blank United 56-0 in bi-district football  – The Manvel Mavericks will play Plugerville Weis in the Class 5A Division I Area Football Playoffs Friday at Bryan’s Green Stadium at 7 p.m., after blanking Beaumont United, 56-0 in bi-district action, Nov. 12 at AISD Memorial Stadium in Alvin. Ty Harris busted loose for a 61-yard touchdown run on the game’s opening series and the Mavs (9-2) never looked back. Both Harris (101 yards) and De`Monte Seymour (114 yards, one TD) went over the 1,000-yard barrier with Seymour also becoming the all-time leading rushing leader (2,767 yards) and TD producer (44) in school history. Quarterback Kaeden Smith also competed 12 of 15 passes for 100 yards and two TD’s.

      

    Maverick Basketball opens with win – The Manvel Mavericks opened their 2021-22 boys’ hoops season with a 51-36 victory over George Ranch, Tuesday night on the road. Leading 23-18 at the break, the Mavs put the game out of reach with a 15-3 surge in the third period. Leading the way for the Mavs was Jamari McDowell with 17 points and A.J. Freeman with 12 points.     Sharks rally past Clear Creek in bi-district – Shadow Creek will host a Class 6A Division 2 area football playoff game with C.E. King Friday at AISD Freedom Field after rallying to edge Clear Creek 45-38 in bi-district action, Nov. 12 at Freedom Field. The Sharks (9-2) overcame double digit deficits of 14-3 and 21-10 in picking up their ninth consecutive victory. Jayvion Anderson also made a game-saving interception in the end zone during the game’s closing moments to secure the win for Brad Butler’s squad. Quarterback Duke Butler completed 16 of 21 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to Lawrence Armstrong. Tylik Burton also had a big game on the ground for Shadow Creek with the sophomore providing 210 yards on 14 carries and three TD’s.

       

    Lady Sharks Volleyball receives seven all district selections – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks received a total of seven player selections to the All-District 23-6A Volleyball team. The trio of Deja Benjamin, Aria Rideaux and Dominique Phills all captured first team nods, while Mackenzie Collins was tabbed as the league’s top newcomer. Ella Hestand and Alana Burks both gained second team selections and Sarah Du earned honorable mention status. The Lady Sharks went 26-18 overall as the district’s third playoff seed and was a bi-district finalist.

    Yellowjacket Football closes season – The Alvin Yellowjackets closed their 2021 football season with a 56-33 defeat to Alief Taylor, Nov. 5 at Crump Stadium in Alief. Alvin finishes their season with a 4-6 overall mark and 2-5 in 23-6A. Dayshawn Peterson rushed for 186 yards and three touchdowns in the finale to become the 11th runner in Yellowjacket history to cross the magic barrier. Peterson finished with 1,134 yards overall. Jordon Torres also rushed for a pair of touchdowns against Taylor.

     

    Lady Jacket basketball debuts with two wins under new coach – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets opened their 2021-22 Basketball season with a pair of wins under new head coach Monique Whittaker. Alvin topped Sam Rayburn by a 50-21 count, Nov. 5 in Pasadena, while edging Cleveland 46-40, Tuesday night at home. The Lady Jackets next compete at the Channelview Tournament this week. Previous coaching stops for Whittaker include Coldspring-Oakhurst, Cleveland and Madisonville. The Lamar University graduate guided Oakhurst to consecutive regional quarterfinal appearances.

     

    Seven Alvin student-athletes sign athletic letters – A total of seven student athletes from Alvin High School inked collegiate letters of intent during the fall National Signing Day Wednesday at the AHS Competition Gym. The list included Tanner Marek (Baseball, Texas A&M-Corpus); Victoria Valdez (Softball, Texas Tech), Chloe Foster (Softball, University of Houston), Kanoe Cleland (Henderson State University), Allie Armstrong (Lamar State College), Isabella Farmer (San Jac) and Chiara Olison (Jarvis Christian College).

    Lady Mavericks advance to region tourney – The Manvel Lady Mavericks rolled to a four-set victory over Barbers Hill by 25-21, 24-26, 25-18 and 25-22 scores in the Class 5A Regional Volleyball Quarterfinals, Tuesday at Delmar Field House in Houston. The victory was the 19th straight for the 35-11 Lady Mavs, who advance to the Region III-5A Tourney for the third time in school history. Manvel will meet Plugerville Henrickson, Friday in the regional semifinals at 7 p.m. at Delmar with the winner playing either College Station or Fulshear in the regional finals, Saturday at 1 p.m. In Tuesday’s match, Devyn Lewis provided 26 kills and 13 digs for a double double, while Mary Kate Preston added 12 kills and three blocks. Kenedy Massie also dished out 46 assists and three blocks and Bea Angeles chipped in 29 digs, while other match totals included Lyric Jordan with seven kills, Amari Jackson and Brooke Wight with five kills apiece and Jackson with four blocks.

      

    Mavericks host Beaumont United in bi-district football – The Manvel Mavericks will host Beaumont United in Class 6A Bi-District Football action, Friday at Alvin ISD Memorial Stadium with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Manvel enters the contest as the tri-champion from 10-5A, Division I, going 8-2 overall and 7-1 in district play. The Mavs blanked Milby, 62-0 in their regular season finale, Nov. 4 to secure the district’s number two playoff seed.

    Sharks host Clear Creek in football bi-district – After finishing the regular season with eight straight wins, the Shadow Creek Sharks kick off play in the Class 6A Bi-District Football Playoffs by hosting Clear Creek, Friday at AISD Freedom Field at 7 p.m. The Sharks enter the contest with an 8-2 overall mark and a perfect 7-0 district mark as the 23-6A champions. The Sharks closed the regular season with a 37-0 triumph over Alief Hastings, Nov. 5 at Freedom Field. Quarterback Duke Butler passed for 166 yards and two TD’s to key the victory. Jo`Qwan West grabbed both of Butler’s scoring tosses and added another score on special teams with a 70-yard punt return.

     

     

     

    Lady Sharks top Dulles, Springs to open hoop season – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks opened their 2021-22 Basketball season with a pair of victories. The Lady Sharks posted a 55-31 win over Dulles in their season opener, Nov. 5 in Sugar Land. Alana Trail pumped in 11 points, while R`mani Taylor and Aiyana Johnson added 10 points apiece and Brooklyn Brown provided 11 rebounds. Johnson and Taylor both had 10 rebounds for a double double, as well. The Lady Sharks then captured a 68-44 victory over Clear Springs, Nov. 9 in League City. Shadow Creek next competes at the Peggy Whitley Classic this weekend in League City.

    Horsfall signs pro volleyball contract – Former Alvin High School Volleyball standout Taylor Horsfall signed a professional contract on Oct. 25 to play overseas with Aris Polemiou of the Cyprus Volleyball Federation. While the team is in the league’s second division, they are planning to move back into the first division and this is the first time the organization has picked up a foreign player in several years. “I have never been more excited and hopefully, I will be playing in higher leagues in different countries,” she added. Horsfall had a banner high career at Alvin, closing her prep career as the school’s all-time digs leader (2,125). Along with earning all-district honors all four years, Horsfall also collected all-state honors three times. Taylor then went on to Tulsa University, where she received all-conference accolades three times at the libero position and was twice named the American Conference’s libero of the year. Horsfall also led the nation in digs her senior year with 805 and was named to the AVCA’s All-Region North Team.

     

    Lady Jackets’ season ends in bi-district – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets saw their season come to an end in the Class 6A Bi-District Volleyball playoffs by 20-25, 15-25 and 9-25 scores, Tuesday at Clear High School in Friendswood. Alvin closes their season at 18-23 overall and finished the regular season as the fourth place playoff seed from 23-6A. Match totals from the bi-district match included Mackenzie Strban with seven kills, Ana Garza with six kills, Korrigan Wright with eight assists and Janey Anderson with six assists and nine digs.

     

    Jackets compiled 400 offensive yards against Strake – The Alvin Yellowjackets had 402 yards of total offense in their 63-21 defeat to Strake Jesuit here, Oct. 29. Deyshawn Peterson rushed for a career high of 258 yards on 21 carries and one TD. Alvin next closes the regular season on the road against Alief Taylor, Friday at Crump Stadium at 7 p.m. With a 4-5 overall record and 2-4 in  district, the Jackets can make the postseason with a win over Taylor and a loss by Strake.

    Lady Mavericks sweep PNG in district – The Manvel Lady Mavericks opened their road to the Class 5A volleyball playoffs by sweeping Port Neches-Groves by 25-14, 25-12 and 25-22 in bi-district play, Monday at Goose Creek Memorial High School in Baytown. Moving their record to 33-11 overall, the victory was the 17th straight for the Lady Mavs, who now advance to play Hightower in the area playoffs, Friday at Shadow Creek High School in Pearland at 5 p.m. Match totals from Tuesday’s triumph included Mary Kate Preston with eight kills and five blocks, Devyn Lewis with six kills and nine digs, Kenedy Massie with 17 assists and four aces and Jayden Walker with nine assists.

      

    Playoff bound Mavericks rally to edge Paetow – De`Monte Seymour dashed for a 20-yard run with 52 seconds remaining to lift the playoff bound Manvel Mavericks to a 33-28 victory in 10-5A Division I Football action, Oct. 29 at AISD Freedom Field in Iowa Colony. The victory moved the Mavs’ overall record to 7-2 and 6-1 in district play. Manvel can clinch at least the number two seed for the district with a win against Milby, Friday at Barnett Stadium at 7 p.m. In last week’s victory, Seymour also provided 16 and 41-yard scoring runs, while quarterback Kaeden Smith threw scoring passes of 61 and 81 yards to Isaiah King. Seymour rushed for 106 yards, while Smith added 201 yards through the air and King compiled 191 receiving yards.

    Sharks capture 23-6A Football crown – The Shadow Creek Sharks captured the 23-6A Football crown with a 34-27 victory over Pearland, Oct. 29 at Pearland ISD Stadium. The victory was also seventh straight for the Sharks (7-2 overall, 6-0), who wrap up the regular season Friday at AISD Freedom Field against Alief Hastings at 7 p.m. Tylik Burton led the way in last week’s win over Pearland, rushing for 230 yards and three TD’s Quarterback Duke Butler passed for 135 yards and a one TD, which went to Lawrence Armstrong. The Sharks will face the fourth playoff seed from 24-6A at a site and time to be determined next week.

     

    Lady Sharks drop bi-district match to Springs – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks saw their season come to an end in the Class 6A Bi-District Volleyball playoffs to Clear Springs by 15-25, 18-25 and 19-25 scores, Tuesday at Alvin High School. The Lady Sharks close their season at 26-18 and as the third playoff seed from 23-6A. The Lady Jackets (17-22 overall) will face 24-6A Champion Clear Creek in the bi-district playoff round, Nov. 2 at Clear Brook High School in Friendswood at 6:30 p.m. In Tuesday’s win over Taylor, junior Ana Garza had a double double with 12 kills and 11 digs along with three aces. Addison Hansen added nine kills and five blocks, while Janey Anderson dished out 20 assists and Korrigan Wright chipped in 12 assists. The Lady Jackets, who are the fourth playoff seed from 23-6A, next play at Pasadena High in a warm-up match, Friday at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Jackets keep playoff hopes alive – The Alvin Yellowjackets kept their playoff hopes alive despite a 35-21 defeat to Dawson in 23-6A Football action, Oct. 22 in Pearland. Cole Erndt rushed for 86 yards on 11 carries, while Jordan Torres added 63 yards on the ground and quarterback Trevor Bockel chipped in 61 rushing yards. Alvin compiled 320 yards of total offense. Daniel Blume scored on an 18-yard run, while Bockel scored from 11 yards out and Torres provided a 16-yard scoring run.     Mavericks host Paetow in first place showdown – The Manvel Mavericks host Katy Paetow in a key 10-5A Division I Football showdown, Friday at AISD Freedom Field in Iowa Colony at 7 p.m. Manvel enters the contest with a 5-1 district record and 6-2 overall record, while unbeaten Paetow is 6-0 in district and 8-0 overall. The Mavs are coming off a dominating 70-14 triumph over Kempner, Oct. 21 in Iowa Colony. Manvel rolled up 495 yards of total offense and scored on six of their first seven possessions. De`Monte Seymour opened the scoring with a 36-yard run on Manvel’s first series and the Mavs never looked back.

    Lady Sharks to face Springs in bi-district – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks will face Clear Springs in the Class 6A Bi-District Volleyball Playoffs, Nov. 2 at Alvin High School at 5:30 p.m. As the third seed from 23-6A, the Lady Sharks enter the match with a 25-17 overall record. Shadow Creek closed out district play with a 25-15, 25-7 and 25-14 sweep at Alief Hastings, Tuesday. Match totals included Dominique Phills and Aria Rideaux with 12 kills each, Sarah Du with 21 assists and Jadyn Murry with 10 assists.

     

    Sharks meet Oilers for first – The playoff bound and Shadow Creek Sharks meet Pearland in a showdown for first place in the 23-6A Football Standings, Friday night at Pearland ISD Stadium at 7 p.m. The Sharks enter the contest with a 6-2 overall record and 5-1 league mark. Shadow Creek is coming off a 49-0 home victory over Alief Elsik, Oct. 22 at AISD Freedom Field in Iowa Colony.  The win was the sixth straight for head coach Brad Butler’s squad.     Lady Jackets punch volley playoff ticket – The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets have punched their ticket to the postseason and will be advancing to the 6A volleyball playoffs as the fourth place team from 23-6A. The Lady Jackets gave league leading Dawson a tough match on Oct. 19, but ending up falling by an 18-25, 18-25 and 9-25 count to the Lady Eagles in Alvin. Match totals for Alvin included Wylie Singleton with seven kills, Mackenzie Strban with 10 digs and Korrigan Wright with 10 assists. The Lady Jackets next host Alief Taylor, Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Jackets put 300 yards of offense against Sharks – The Alvin Yellowjackets put up 300 yards of total offense in their 49-13 defeat to Shadow Creek, Oct. 15  in 23-6A Football action at AISD Memorial Stadium. Deyshawn Peterson (81 yards on 14 carries) and quarterback Trevor Bockel (78 yards on 15 carries) scored the Alvin touchdowns. With the match tied at 8-8 in the fifth and deciding set, the Manvel girls erupted for an 8-0 run to claim the title. The come-from-behind win clinched the district championship for the Lady Mavs, who moved their record to 29-11 overall and 15-0 in district. Match totals included Devyn Lewis with 15 kills and 11 digs for a double double along with seven aces, Mary Kate Preston with 10 kills and eight blocks, Lyric Jordan with 11 kills, Kenedy Massie with 33 assists, Bea Angeles with 17 digs and Amari Jackson with six blocks. Seymour rushed for 173 yards on 12 carries and four TD’s. Manvel also improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in district play.     Sharks win fifth straight – The Shadow Creek Sharks picked up their fifth consecutive victory on Oct. 15, claiming a 49-13 victory over Alvin in 23-6A Football action at AISD Memorial Stadium. The Sharks moved to 5-2 overall with the victory and stayed in a first place tie with Pearland at 4-0 in the district standings. Duke Butler completed 8 of 10 passes for 168 yards and two TD’s with Joshua Best and Caleb Washington making the scoring grabs. Lawrence Armstrong also joined Washington, Tylik Burton and Felix Buchanan with touchdowns on the ground. Dejuan Lewis came up with a big play for the SC special teams as well by dashing 95 yards for a kickoff return in the first half. The Sharks next host Alief Elsik, Friday at AISD Freedom Field at 7 p.m.

    Yellowjackets defeat Hastings – The Alvin Yellowjackets captured a 29-6 victory over Alief in 23-6A Football action, Oct. 7 in Alief. Alvin improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in district with the victory. Quarterback Trevor Bockel rushed for 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns to highlight a Jacket offensive attack, which rushed for 279 yards and delivered three scoring drives of six minutes or more on the clock at Crump Field. Deyshawn Peterson and Jordan Torres also had short scoring runs for Alvin, while Caleb Reed booted three extra points and Daniel Blume had a two-point conversion run.     Kerlin picked by peers to coach in all-star game – Manvel Mavericks’ head baseball coach Kelly Kerlin has been selected by his peers in the high school coaching ranks to be the 5A South squad coach for the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Class 5A-6A All-Star game, June 19 at Dell Diamond Field in Round Rock. Kerlin has guided the Mavericks to six playoff appearances overall with the 2013 squad becoming the first Manvel team to advance past the first round of the playoffs. That same Mavs’ squad also topped Brazoswood in the area playoffs and advanced to the regional quarterfinals.

     

     

    Mavericks bounce back with 49-10 triumph over Angleton – The Manvel Mavericks bounced back from their first district loss two weeks earlier with a 49-10 triumph over Angleton in 10-5A Division I Football action, Oct. 8 in Angleton. Improving to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in district, the Mavs spotted the Widlcats an early 3-0 lead by scoring on three consecutive possessions. De`Monte Seymour rushed for 196 yards on 14 carries and three touchdowns, while quarterback Kaeden Smith completed 7 of 8 passes for 102 yards. Ty Harris added 89 yards on the ground and two TD’s as well. On defense, the Mavs held Angleton to only 85 total yards and Kivon Wright delivered five sacks to highlight a seven sack evening for the Mavs. Manvel next hosts Foster, Friday at AISD Freedom Field in Iowa Colony at 7 p.m.

     

     

    Lady Mavericks move step closer to clinching district – The Manvel Lady Mavericks won their 13th straight match and moved a step closer to clinching the 23-5A Volleyball crown with a 25-11, 25-16 and 25-15 straight set sweep over Goose Creek Memorial, Tuesday in Manvel. Moving their record to 28-11 overall and 13-0 in district play, the Manvel girls were led by Mary Kate Preston’s 10 kills and five blocks, nine kills apiece by Devyn Lewis, Lyric Jordan and Brooke Wight, 35 assists by Kenedy Massie, 17 digs by Bea Angeles and 10 digs by Emily Altamirano. The Lady Mavs next play at La Porte, Friday at 6:30 p.m.

    Sharks win fourth straight – The Shadow Creek Sharks picked up their fourth consecutive victory on Oct. 8, claiming a 35-20 victory over Strake Jesuit in 23-6A Football action at AISD Freedom Field. The Sharks moved to 4-2 overall with the victory and stayed in a first place tie with Pearland at 3-0 in the district standings. Duke Butler completed 13 of 23 passes for 196 yards and four touchdowns. Jo`Qwan West made a pair of touchdown receptions, while Caleb Washington and Felix Buchanan had one apiece. Buchanan’s 43-yard TD reception helped sew up the victory for Shadow Creek in the fourth quarter after the Crusaders had pulled within 28-20.     Lady Yellowjackets sweep Elsik– The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets captured a 25-15, 25-16 and 25-15 straight set sweep over Alief Elsik in 23-6A volleyball action Tuesday night at the AHS Competition. Gym. The second straight victory for the Lady Jackets improved their overall record to 15-19 and 4-3 in district play. Addison Hansen led the way for Alvin on Tuesday with a match-high 10 kills, while Mackenzie Strban and Ana Garza provided nine kills and 13 digs apiece. Korrigan Wright also turned in a double double performance with 17 assists and 17 digs and Janey Anderson dished out 18 assists. The Lady Jackets next play at Pearland, Friday at 6:30 p.m.

     

    Jackets’ win streak halted in defeat to Pearland – The Alvin Yellowjackets suffered a 56-14 defeat to Pearland in 23-6A Football action, Oct. 1 at AISD Memorial Stadium. Alvin (3-2 overall, 1-1 in district) watched its first three-game streak since 2004 get snapped with the defeat. Quarterback Trevor Bockel scored on a 33-yard keeper and led Alvin with 113 yards on 17 carries. R.J. Jarvis also threw a 74-yard touchdown pass to Deyshawn Peterson on a double reverse flea flicker. Alvin compiled 306 offensive yards overall in the contest. The Jackets next play Taylor at Crump Stadium in Alief, Thursday night at 7 p.m.

    Lady Mavericks keep rolling in 22-5A – The league leading Manvel Lady Mavericks stayed on a roll in 22-5A volleyball play, cruising past Texas City 25-7, 25-12 and 25-15 Tuesday night at home. The Lady Mavericks improved to 25-11 overall and a perfect 11-0 in district to remain two games ahead of both Friendswood and Santa Fe for the top spot in 22-5A. Manvel also moved up from 24th to 22nd in the TGCA’s weekly Class 5A State poll. On Tuesday, the Manvel girls were led by Brooke Wight’s 10 kills and two aces, 10 kills and four blocks by Mary Kate Preston, 22 assists and nine digs by Kenedy Massie and nine kills by Devyn Lewis.     Sharks rally for 45-31 triumph – The Shadow Creek Sharks exploded for 28 unanswered points in the second half and won their third straight with a 45-31 triumph over Dawson, Oct. 1 at Pearland ISD Stadium. Shadow Creek improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the 23-6A Football standings. Tylik Burton rushed for 161 yards on 16 attempts, while Felix Buchanan added 125 yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns to give the Sharks a pair of triple digit performances on the ground. Shadow Creek compiled 339 rushing yards overall. Quarterback Duke Butler also threw for 164 yards and two TD’s. The Sharks next host Strake Jesuit, Friday night at AISD Freedom Field in Iowa Colony at 7 p.m.

    Lady Sharks sweep Taylor – The Shadow Creek Lady Sharks collected a road sweep at Alief on Tuesday with a 25-21, 25-19 and 25-11 straight set victory over Taylor. The victory moved the Lady Sharks’ record to 22-14 overall and 5-2 in the 23-6A Volleyball standings. Deja Benjamin and Aria Rideaux both drilled 13 kills to lead the offense, while Mackenzie Collins provided nine kills and Dominique Phills had eight kills. Sarah Du also dished out 20 assists, followed by Jadyn Murry with 19 assists and Ella Hestand chipped in 11 digs. The Lady Sharks next host Dawson, Friday at 6:30 p.m.

    Yellowjackets win third straight – The Alvin Yellowjackets traveled to Alief Sept. 24 and came away with a 36-20 victory over Elsik in the 23-6A Football opener for both teams at Crump Stadium. Alvin improved to 3-1 overall and picked up their third consecutive victory, marking the first time the Alvin Football program has accomplished such a feat since 2004. Deyshawn Peterson rambled for a 52-yard touchdown run and paced the Jackets on the ground with 101 yards. Daniel Blume and RJ Jarvis each scored on 3-yard runs and Cole Erndt went in from 12 yards out. Cade Bingham also delivered the second longest interception return for a touchdown in Alvin High School football history with a 95-yard interception return to close the first half. Scott Keithley holds the longest return record for Alvin with a 101-yard return against Clear Creek in 1991. The Jackets next host Pearland Friday at AISD Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m.

Improving to 23-11 overall and 9-0 in district, the Lady Mavs lead Santa Fe by one match in the 22-5A standings and Friendswood by two matches. Manvel next plays at Santa Fe, Friday at 6:30 p.m. Devyn Lewis led the way for the Lady Mavs in Tuesday’s victory with 29 kills, seven digs and two aces, while Kenedy Massie dished out 47 assists and Mary Kate Preston added 14 kills and four blocks. Manvel holds a 3-2 overall record and is 2-1 in district play. De`Monte Seymour, who rushed for 186 yards in the contest, scored Manvel’s lone touchdown on a 12-yard run in the second quarter. The Mavs’ defense also scored on a safety and Antonio Rodriguez booted a 26-yard field goal for the Mavs’ other tallies. The Mavs next play at Angleton, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.

    Sharks top Taylor in 23-6A Football opener – The Shadow Creek Sharks jumped out a 14-point first half lead and made the advantage stand up in a 35-21 triumph in the 23-6A Football opener for both teams, Sept. 24 at AISD Freedom Field. The Sharks improved to 2-2 overall with the win as well. Quarterback Duke Butler passed for 227 yards and threw TD passes to Caleb Washington (2 yards), Lawrence Armstrong (23 yards), Jacorey Watson (19 yards) and Jo`Qwan West (12 yards).     Guthrie earns KPRC-2/UTMB Athlete of the Week nod – Alvin Yellowjackets’ outside linebacker Gavin Guthrie was recently named the athlete of the week by KPRC-2/UTMB Health. Guthrie has helped Alvin football move over the .500 mark at 2-1 at the first time in four years. The Yellowjackets are coming off a 40-14 victory over Pasadena Memorial, Sept. 10. Quarterback Trevor Bockel paced Alvin with 79 yards on eight carries and two TD’s, while also throwing a scoring pass to Daniel Blume. Leading the way for the Lady Mavs with Lyric Jordan with 15 kills and six blocks, Devyn Lewis with 14 kills and 11 digs for a double double along with four blocks, Mary Kate Preston with nine kills and 11 blocks, Kenedy Massie with 38 assists, Bea Angeles with 11 digs and Brooke Wight with seven kills.     Mavericks cruise to 41-6 victory over Terry – The Manvel Mavericks cruised to a 41-6 victory over Terry in 10-5A Division I Football action, Sept. 16 at Traylor Stadium in Rosenberg. Quarterback Kaeden Smith completed 17 of 28 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. De`Monte Seymour added 107 yards on the ground and two TD’s and also caught a scoring pass from Smith. Manvel, who improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in district, took the opening kickoff and drove 57 yards in eight plays for the game’s initial tallies and never looked back.     Yellowjackets roll to homecoming win – The Alvin Yellowjackets rolled to a 17-0 homecoming win over Kempner Sept. 3 at AISD Memorial Stadium. Deyshawn Peterson rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns to highlight a 282 total yard offensive performance. Caleb Reed also booted a 37-yard field and added two extra points to account for the Jackets’ other tallies. On the defensive side, Jimmy Beasley and Easton Winfield recorded sacks, while Gage Johnson joined Cade Bingham and Christian Montalvo with fumble recoveries and Gavin Guthrie intercepted a pass.     Mavericks’ Football rebounds against Crosby  – The Manvel Mavericks rebounded for their heartbreaking opening week loss and pulled away in the second half for 35-21 victory over Crosby Sept. 3 at AISD Freedom Field. De`Monte Seymour led the way by exploding for 226 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Ty Harris also added 94 rushing yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Kaeden Smith went 20 yards on a keeper as well and Chancellor Whittaker dashed 58 yards with a blocked field goal.     Late rally by Sharks falls short – A late rally for the Shadow Creek Sharks fell short in a 24-14 defeat to Bridgeland Sept. 4 at FCU Stadium in Cypress. Shadow Creek cut a 17-0 halftime to 17-14 in the second half until Bridgeland added an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter. For the Sharks, quarterback Duke Butler threw for 110 yards and one TD, while Sean Gilbert and Maurice Williams intercepted passes and Theo Randle and Zion Taylor posted sacks.     Jackets drop football season opener to Stratford– The Alvin Yellowjackets dropped a 33-6 decision to Stratford in the teams’ regular season football opener Thursday night at Tully Stadium in Houston. Dayshawn Peterson scored the Alvin touchdown on a 10-yard run in the second half. Gavin Guthrie and Larry Vojacek also came up with sacks in the contest and the Alvin defense turned in a goal line stand with Vojacek making a fourth down stop on the Spartans’ quarterback.     Lady Mavericks sweep Sterling to open district – The Manvel Lady Mavericks opened 22-5A play with a 25-19, 25-13 and 25-18 straight set volleyball triumph over Baytown Sterling Tuesday in Manvel. The Lady Mavs won their ninth straight match to improve to 13-5 overall. Devyn Lewis led the way with 14 kills and 10 digs for a double double, while Kenedy Massie dished out 36 assists and Bea Angeles contributed 15 digs and four aces. The Lady Mavs also went a perfect 6-0 to win the gold bracket championship at the Dickinson Tournament on Aug. 21. The Lady Mavs snapped Barbers Hill’s 17-match win streak in the title match. Lewis joined Mary Kate Preston and Lyric Jordan on the all-tourney team. The Manvel girls will next be competing at the Leander Tourney this weekend.

     

    Maverick Football open season at Dickinson – The Manvel Mavericks open their 2021 football season with Dickinson on the road Friday night at Sam Vitanza Stadium at 7 p.m. The Mavericks, who advanced to the state quarterfinals last season, enter the contest ranked No. 1 in the Houston Chronicle’s Class 5A preseason football poll, while the Gators are No. 10 in the 6A poll. Mavs’ linebacker Justin Medlock also added to his list of preseason accolades with the University of Miami commit recently being named to the Houston Touchdown Club’s UIL preseason team.

    Shadow Creek host North Shore in football opener – The Shadow Creek Sharks host North Shore in their 2021 football opener Friday night at AISD Freedom Field at 7 p.m. Shadow Creek went 6-4 in their initial year in 6A, advancing to regional semifinals. North Shore advanced to the state semifinals last season, but also had their two-year state title reign snapped. The Sharks also lost their most players ever to graduation during the offseason at 32.
