    Greetings to you all! My name is Amanda Smith and I am the Advanced Academics Specialist at Harby JHS. I am pleased to announce the start of a new after-school program here at HJH. Masterminds is a “meeting of the minds” that will take place on Mondays from 4:10 pm - 5:15 pm in the LGI room (121). This program is an Advanced Academics outreach service in efforts to foster the exploration of advanced levels of student knowledge and understanding based on personal passion. Below you will find various information about the program details. If you are interested in joining Masterminds, please complete the attached permission slip/contract and return to Mrs. Smith in the office located inside room 121.     OBJECTIVE:

    • To allow students to explore their own passions and to promote their empowerment through the planning, development, and presentation of a product that is reflective of student knowledge and understanding


    • Masterminds is designed to provide an outlet for students to develop ownership of knowledge related to topics of interest and to present what they learn through project development to an audience.


    • We will work on project presentation skills, citing evidence, and we will foster creativity through student choice of topic and project product displays.

    BACKGROUND OF MASTERMINDS: Masterminds is designed to meet the needs of advanced learners and students who want to push beyond their current limits of knowledge.

    • Students will meet once per week for one hour after-school (4:10-5:15 on Mondays in the LGI room.

    • Students will have the opportunity to research an area of interest and develop a project with a product choice over their topic.

    • Students will present twice per year (once per semester) to a community audience.

    • Masterminds is based on the ideas of “Genius Hour”, “Passion Project”, and/or “Engaging their Minds” and foundationally on Growth Mindset.

    • This organization is open to students grades 6-8 who want to grow  intellectually.

    PROJECT DEVELOPMENT STEPS:

    1. Brainstorming topic ideas

    2. Topic identification

    3. Research (APA citation use)

    4. Product plan

    5. Product and presentation development with continuous research

    6. Presentation rehearsal

    7. Presentation (community support held in the evening)

    8. Personal and group reflection

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION

    • Students must be able to stay after school from 4:10 pm - 5:15 pm once per week (Mondays).

    • Students must have transportation home with pick-up at 5:15 pm.

    • Students must have a Google account in order to work on Google Drive.

    • Students must be willing to present the project presentation and product during the community engagement night.

    • Students must have the permission slip/contract filled out by parents in order to attend the meetings.

    • My child,  _________________________________, has permission to participate in Masterminds with Mrs. Smith on Mondays from 4:10 - 5:15 pm. I understand that I am responsible for picking up my child at 5:15 pm. (If the student is picked up later than 5:15 pm more than one time, the student will not be allowed to attend future meetings.)

    • My child has a Google account and understands that he or she is responsible for the project file being used for the project purposes.

    • My child will participate in the project presentation night on December 5, 2016 at 6:00 pm in the LGI room.

    • I have signed the Media and Medical Release Forms, as well as this form.
