Assistive TechnologyAssistive technology specialists conduct assistive technology evaluations and provide support/training for teachers and students regarding the implementation of assistive technology in the classroom.Assistive technology devices are items, pieces of equipment, or product systems, that are used to increase, maintain, and improve functional capabilities of a child with a disability. These items may be purchased commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized. The devices do not however, include medical devices that are surgically implanted, or the replacement of such devices.
Assistive Technology Services
Assistive technology services directly assist children with disabilities in the selection, attainment, and use of assistive technology devices. Services include:
· Evaluating the needs of children with disabilities, including functional evaluation of the child in the customary environment;
· Purchasing, leasing, or providing for the acquisition of assistive technology devices by children with disabilities;
· Selecting, designing, fitting, customizing, adapting, applying, maintaining, repairing, or replacing of assistive technology devices;
· Coordinating and using other therapies, interventions, or services with assistive technology devices, such as those associated with existing education and rehabilitation plans and programs;
· Training and technical assistance for professionals (including individuals providing education and rehabilitation services), employers or other individuals who provide services to, employ, or otherwise substantially involved in the major life functions of children with disabilities.
