Career and Technology Education The Career and Technical Education Department in Alvin ISD strives to prepare each student with the necessary tools to achieve their goals, whether the goals include a four-year college degree or technical degree. At all secondary campuses in Alvin ISD a variety of Tech Prep and statewide articulated courses are offered through the Career and Technical Education Department. These courses will count as college credit and can be used at over 60 different two-year community colleges across the state. Tech Prep and articulated courses can also provide an avenue for satisfying advanced measures for the Distinguished Achievement Programs. All students, regardless of their selected graduation plan, who complete the course requirements, may apply the credit toward a two-year college degree. In addition to statewide articulated courses, the Career and Technical Education Department provides preparation for industry certification, and, in some cases, on site testing services. Industry certifications are nationally recognized and may be continued at a higher level upon entering a technical school or community college. Alvin ISD's Career and Technical Education Department offers numerous opportunities for students to pursue their interests and career goals. Students need to remember that when deciding on a coherent sequence of studies that this is not a lifelong commitment, but rather a place to begin their journey into the world of work. If you change your career interests, the skills you learn along the way will prove invaluable. If you have questions about your graduation plan, contact your counselor or career specialists at your campus. If you have questions about a specific program or course of study, contact the office of Career and Technical Education at 281.245.2579. Alvin High School currently offers courses in Auto Collision Technology, Business and Technology, Criminal Justice, Family and Consumer Science Technology, and Industrial Technology. Students in many of these courses can obtain college credit or industry certifications. The following are some of the certifications that are available for students to take advantage of: Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS), CompTIA A+, NCCER certifications. Students have competed and placed in district, regional, state, and national competitions within these program areas. Students in Health Science Technology have the opportunity to enroll in a dual credit program with Alvin Community College to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Many nursing programs are now requiring applicants to have completed an EMT or Certified Nurse Assistant course prior to being considered for admission. All students enrolled in this program have successfully completed a minimum of one HST course and are excited to continue their studies in health care. ASSETS Academy is currently offering Business Computer Information Systems (BCIS), Principles of Marketing, Advertising, and Business Support Systems. During their extended day program they are also offering Accounting to interested students. The Advertising students will meet the challenge of establishing and manning a school store. To make the connection between advertising and a successful entrepreneurship, students will use photography, create menu boards and promotional materials, as well as design a pricing strategy for their products. Students at the Manvel High School campus have the opportunity of enrolling in Agricultural Science Technology, Business and Computer Technology, Family and Consumer Science, Health Science Technology, and Industrial Technology courses. The Family and Consumer Science and Industrial Technology courses are utilizing modular learning labs in their course offerings. These labs will increase the student's ability to experience a variety of real world training exercises from water filtration to aviation. The students will also work within industry software such as Microsoft Office and AutoCAD LT. The health care industry is one of the fastest growing industries in today's job market. In response to this need, Manvel HS is offering through Health Science Technology a nurse's aide program. In their first year of study students are learning medical terminology, patient treatment skills, leadership skills, communication skills, infection control and safety techniques and emergency response measures. The Career and Technical Education Department looks forward to working with the students in these programs and to keep you updated on program growth and student success. |
