Superintendent's Message Regarding President's Speech |
Alvin ISD Parents and Community Members, I'm sure you have heard that the President of the United States has planned to address school children in a speech scheduled to be broadcast via the internet on Tuesday, September 8th at noon. I want to provide some important information about Alvin ISD's plans regarding this speech. As I have visited our campuses the past two weeks, it is apparent that students are actively engaged in learning that has been carefully planned by our teachers and staff. I appreciate all of their efforts in utilizing our instructional time so efficiently. Having said that, we have no plans to alter schedules or lessons in order to view the presidential speech live on Tuesday. We are exploring ways to archive the broadcast for viewing in classrooms at a later date if appropriate. Just like we have done with similar national events, including presidential inaugurations and elections, we will ask principals to collaborate with teachers to determine if this speech and related lessons are aligned with units of study within our Social Studies curriculum. As is our normal practice, parents may request that their child be excused by contacting the campus principal and giving your child's name and grade level. If this is the case, students will be given an alternative activity. Again, I want to thank you for making the start of the 2009-2010 school year such a success! Sincerely, Robby McGowen, PhD Superintendent |
