Brazoria Fiction Fiesta
Alvin ISD Librarians teamed up with Blue Willow Bookshop for another year-long, get-great-authors-into-our- schools initiative called Brazoria Book Fiesta (BFF)-where books (and authors!) are your best friends forever. BFF’s goal this year is to get highly familiar authors into each school in the district at least once and maybe more! The librarians have the determination; Blue Willow has the connections! Blue Willow is also doing this free of charge. Supporting them is supporting us!
October 29, 2012 was BFF’s kick-off day with Jon Klassen, part of the animation team for Kung Fu Panda,Kung Fu Panda 2, Shrek, and others, but better known to us as the author of one of 2012-13 Bluebonnet 2 x 2 List books called I Want My Hat Back
Klassen appeared at both Marek Elementary and Stevenson Primary on Monday, October 29, 2012. Students at Marek greeted him with their pointy red hats, and hats of all types magically appeared when he was introduced at Stevenson. Klassen read his 2x2 nominee book to the children and then shared his new book This is Not My Hat
The youngest Alvin ISD students were not the only ones to enjoy a Blue Willow sponsored author visit that day. Monday, Alvin Junior High hosted Cinda Williams Chima. She is the author of two Lonestar List Books among many other student favorites. Her young adult books are always a popular item in the junior high library.  View their event here.
January brought a young adult, best-selling author to our district, Darren Shan, Master of Horror! Shan visited Harby Junior High students the morning of January 31st, then traveled to the west side of the district to talk with students at Nolan Ryan Junior High. Students from surrounding schools were invited to attend as well. Shan read previews from his upcoming Zom-B installment, answered questions and then autographed books. Both events were very successful and our students came away with their writing and publishing questions answered by a very attentive and thoughtful author.
Yet another young adult author visited Alvin on February 5, 2013. Blue Willow brought to Manvel Junior High famed author of the Gallagher Girls and Heist Society series Ally Carter! She came in to share her new book (just released the day of the visit) Perfect Scoundrels. Students asked questions about the writing process, her stories, and books yet to come. Ms. Carter's vivacious personality lit up the library as her enthralled audience of 4th to 8th graders took in every word.
Since then, we have had the pleasure of hosting several other well-known authors on our campuses.
