Head Football Coach / Assistant Athletic Director
Kirk Martin is the Manvel Mavericks’ head football coach and an assistant athletic director for Alvin ISD. Coach Martin was raised in Quitaque, a small west Texas town. He played football, basketball and ran track at Valley High School, where he was named to the all-state football and all-South Plains basketball teams. Coach Martin played tight end and was a four-year letterman at the University of Texas at El Paso. He received a Masters in Education Administration from Sul Ross State University. He is beginning his 22nd year coaching and has enjoyed stints at El Paso Cathedral, EP Riverside, Alvin, Odessa Permian, Giddings and Alpine before opening Manvel High School in 2006. Coach Martin is married to Caren, a 2nd grade teacher at Savannah Lakes Elementary. They have three children: Koda Kirk (18), a freshman football player Texas A&M; Cory Jo (17), a Senior volleyball player at Manvel HS; and Kason James (15), a freshman football player at MHS. Coach Martin and family attend New Hope Church where they work in the food service ministry. In his free time, Coach Martin enjoys watching college football, playing golf, and visiting family in Lubbock and Ruidoso.
Brad Butler is the Mavericks’ assistant head coach, the defensive secondary coach, and the MHS liaison to junior highs in Alvin ISD. Coach Butler is from Brownwood, Texas, where he was a two time all-state quarterback. He graduated from Texas A&M University with bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. He also has a master’s degree in education administration. This is Coach Butler’s 19th year coaching; He served as the offensive coordinator at Klein and Magnolia before helping open MHS in 2006. He is married to Lisa, an account executive at Dimension Data. They have three children: Victoria (18), Juliet (15), and Duke (10). Coach Butler attends New Hope Church and enjoys spending time with his family and fishing.
Gerald “Flash” Burns begins his 23rd year of teaching and coaching - his tenth at MHS. He has been married for 16 years to Ashley, a counselor at Manvel High School. The couple has two sons: Beau (13) and Garrison (10). Coach Burns graduated from Texas Tech University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Sport Science, with a minor in History. Coach Burns is the Mavericks’ Defensive Coordinator and Head Powerlifting coach. He coordinates the MHS strength and conditioning program and teaches U. S. Government. Coach Burns attends New Hope Church and enjoys riding his motorcycle, working out and spending time with family and friends.
Offensive Coordinator / Offensive Line / Powerlifting
Larry McRae is the Mavericks’ offensive line coach and Offensive Coordinator. Coach McRae was born in Galveston and raised in Angleton, where he played football and baseball at Angleton High School. While there, Coach McRae earned All-American and Academic All-American honors and was named to the Top 300 National Football Players list in 1995 by several publications. He attended Baylor University on a football scholarship and was a two-year letterman before a third knee surgery sidelined his career. Coach McRae is in his 16th year of coaching and has worked previously as a graduate assistant at Baylor University and Sam Houston State. He was a coach at Waco Bosqueville, Desoto and Angleton high schools before helping open MHS in 2006. Coach McRae is married to Jamie, a counselor at Manvel High School. The couple has two children: Jacob Wayne (8) and Landry Jewell (5). Coach McRae enjoys spending time with family and fishing. He is also the Social Studies Department Head at MHS in addition to serving as the Social Studies Department Head at MHS and teaching AP World History.
Lucas Saucedo is entering his fifth year at MHS and his fifth season of coaching football. He is also a varsity assistant baseball coach and Economics teacher. Coach Saucedo is a graduate of El Campo HS where he lettered in football, baseball, and track. Coach Saucedo went on to play baseball at the University of Incarnate Word before graduating from the University of Houston system. He went on to receive his Masters of Science in Sport Management from Texas A&M University. Coach Saucedo is married to Dana, a first grade dual language teacher at Wilder Elementary. The couple has two children: Aden (8) and Natalie (4). Coach Saucedo and his family attend St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Pearland and enjoy spending time outdoors and attending sporting events.
Alfredo Abrego is entering his 7th year here at Manvel High School. Coach Abrego is the head freshmen coach and teaches social studies at MHS. Coach Abrego was born and raised in Houston. He graduated from Madison High School, where he played football and baseball. After high school, Coach Abrego joined the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at El Toro, Calif., and Iwakuni, Japan. He graduated from the University of Houston at Clear Lake with a bachelor’s degree in history and is married to Michelle. They have four children: Ariel (27); Lea (24), Victoria (23), Alfredo (21), and one grandchild Aubrey. Coach Abrego and family attend the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart church in Houston. Alfredo enjoys spending time with his new grandbaby and walking the family collies, Max and MoMax.
Gregory Bennett is a native of Miami, Fla., and attended Miami Edison HS, where he was a quarterback and receiver on the football team; he also played basketball. He was a USA Today and Parade All-American. Coach Bennett received a scholarship to University of Louisville, where he graduated with a master’s degree in education. He is entering his 16th year of teaching and coaching, but his sixth year as the receivers coach at MHS. Coach Bennett has been married for 20 years to LaTosha; the couple has three boys: Ashton (21), who plays football for Oklahoma. Austin (19) who also plays football for Oklahoma, and Arik (15) who plays football at Manvel. He worships at New Hope church. During his free time, Coach Bennett likes to golf, fish and hunt.
Kendrick Crumedy is the running backs coach and the head boy's track coach. He is in his 6th year of teaching at Manvel High School. Coach Crumedy teaches Economics and Government. He graduated from Sam Houston State University in May of 2008 with a degree in History and Secondary Education, and then again in 2010 with a Master's degree in Kinesiology - Sport Management emphasis. Coach Crumedy is originally from Jasper, Texas and enjoys fishing, horseback riding and working out in his spare time.
Dewan Edmonson is beginning his tenth year in Alvin ISD – his ninth as the outside linebacker coach at MHS. Coach Edmonson was born in Houston and played football and baseball at Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas. Coach Edmonson earned a baseball scholarship to Lee College and graduated from University of Houston Clear Lake with a bachelor’s degree in fitness and human performance. Coach Edmonson is married to LaGenia, an assistant principal at Harby Junior High in Alvin ISD. The couple has three beautiful children: Ansley (26) who is an Engineer for Williams, Dewan Jr. (21) who plays football for Abilene Christian University and Jaden (12)who attends Manvel Jr. High. Coach Edmonson worships at Lakewood Church in Houston and enjoys doing things with his family and fishing in his spare time.
Ray Garza is the Mavericks’ defensive line coach. This is his eighth year of teaching and coaching in Alvin ISD. Coach Garza was born in Galveston and raised in Manvel. He played football, basketball, and ran track at Alvin High School. Coach Garza played football at Blinn Junior College, and was a student-coach at Texas A&M University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. Coach Garza is married to Emily, who is a nurse at Texas Children's Hospital. The couple has three children Gunner (5), Garrett (3), and Gabby (1). Coach Garza attends New Hope Church and enjoys fishing and lifting weights.
Cameron Herzog began his coaching at Manvel High School and is in his 7th year of coaching. Coach Herzog is a Geometry teacher. Coach Herzog, an Alvin, Texas native, graduated from The University of Texas at Austin. He is married to his beautiful wife, Nydia, who is a biology and aquatic science teacher at Manvel High School and they have 4 children; David, Zoe, Penelope and Jude. David plays football for Manvel High School and Zoe plays club soccer. The Herzog family has three dogs; a yorkie named Sammy, a golden doodle named Chance, and a catahoula mix named Odin. Coach Herzog enjoys spending time with his family, watching movies, hunting and attending sporting events. The Herzog family attends New Hope Church.
David Jones is in his 13th year of teaching and coaching - his 8th with Alvin ISD and 3rd year at MHS. He has been married for 18 years to Dianna Jones, who is a PE teacher and is the Head Girl's Track Coach at MHS. The couple has two sons: David (25) Sales Manager with ABC Supply in Dallas and Lance (16) 10th grader at Manvel High School. Coach Jones graduated from U.M.H.B., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Sport Science, with a minor in History. Coach Jones is the Mavericks’ Assistant O-Line coach and assistant Golf coach. Coach Jones attends New Hope Church and enjoys Fishing/Hunting and spending time with family and friends.
This is Coach McClain’s fifth year coaching football at MHS and his sixth year working in Alvin ISD. Coach McClain was two-time all district 1st Team, Houston Area All-Star and State Finalist baseball player while in high school and an All-Conference and Conference Championship baseball player at Texas A&M University – Kingsville. After college, Coach McClain played for Las Aguilas De Piedras Negras of the Northern Couhuilla Mexican Baseball League and worked for the Department Of Defense managing Gyms for US Service Members fighting in Iraq. Coach McClain teaches World Geography here at Manvel High School. He and his wife, Bethany, were blessed with a baby girl, Bria, in 2011. In his spare time, Coach McClain enjoys spending time with his family.
JC Ramirez is going into his fourth year of coaching. He played football and graduated from Alvin High School. After high school he received a scholarship for football for Oklahoma Panhandle State University, and majored in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. Coach Ramirez is married to Jessica Ramirez, who teaches first grade at Mary Marek Elementary. They have two dogs, Chief and Dash.
Brian Robinson is in his 8th year of coaching and his 2nd year at Manvel. Coach Robinson played for University of Houston. He is married to Angie and they have two boys, Champ and Chief. He enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends.
